I play Carcassonne and Ticket to Ride with my wife. We just moved. So, we don't know enough people to have a proper game.

telekinetic 01-02-2008 09:04 AM

Registered BGG checking in.

We roll out Settlers of Catan, Ticket to Ride, Puerto Rico (and it's card game, San Juan), Kuuduk, and Bohnanza, with decent regularity. Our favorite at the moment is Colossal Arena, due to its fun mechanics and easily scaling player size (2+).

radioguy 01-02-2008 09:10 AM

sweet!!!! i almost bought carcassone the other day but i changed to race for the galaxy instead. i need to get carcassone!! we just bought settlers, but haven't played it yet. game night isn't until the third friday of every month!!!! i need to check out colossal arena....what are good two player games??? the girl and i are looking for more games we can play without the whole crew!

telekinetic 01-02-2008 09:25 AM

If you like puerto rico, get San Juan...it's a card game with most of the same mechanics, and is delightful with 2.

Baraka_Guru 01-02-2008 09:45 AM

I've played Carcassonne and Puerto Rico. I didn't like the former that much, but I enjoyed the latter. I think I'd really be into both, but I've only played them once each

I absolutely love the Settlers of Catan and its expansion The Cities and Knights of Catan.

radioguy 01-02-2008 10:09 AM

thanks ya'll...can't wait to play settlers...gonna have to get the expansions! the gaming store here has a 2 for 1 sale going on....looks like i'll be heading out there today!

Willravel 01-02-2008 10:17 AM

I like Monopoly, but I always play it as a socialist which confuses people. In other words, don't let me be the banker or we'll all end up tying.

sapiens 01-02-2008 10:43 AM

I just bought the Switzerland map for Ticket to Ride. It is supposed to be better for two players than the other maps.

I'm interested in Puerto Rico and others like it, but my wife isn't much of a board gamer and we have two kids - drastically reducing available playing time.

I'm definitely going to look into some of the 2 player games mentioned here. Thanks!

radioguy 01-02-2008 11:42 AM

sapiens...check out boardgamegeek.com that place will give you tons of gaming advice. i plan on getting the switzerland expansion as well. i've read great things about mr. jack. that's a two player jack the ripper game.

sapiens 01-02-2008 11:46 AM

I've been to boardgamegeek.com many times. It's a great resource.

http://www.thoughthammer.com is a great vendor. I have purchased nearly all of my boardgames from them.

Settlers of Catan is great. Some fun card games that I've enjoyed playing are Nuclear War and Fluxx. And, of course, there is the classic Axis & Allies which is a great game for when you want to do something a little more involved.

My wife and I play Fluxx occasionally. I bought Chrononauts (which is made by the same people), but I haven't been able to get into it. I used to play Axis and Allies with friends when I was a kid. (Along with Conquest of the Empire and Shogun - both games are similar to Axis and Allies).

MexicanOnABike 01-02-2008 09:07 PM

go

telekinetic 01-02-2008 09:40 PM

Axis and Allies is epic nerd combat at its finest. I'll never forget the time that I, USA, towards the end of the war, fielded a full compliment of 6 super bombers and 8 jet fighters into Germany for a killing blow.

Motherfucker rolled 11 ones (out of a possible 14) for his pre-combat anti-aircraft, taking out all but 3 of my bombers. I was so pissed I think I surrendered.

aeturnum 01-30-2008 02:24 PM

My roomates and I have a good thing going with settlers - we play it about once a week. We have puerto rico, but we haven't tried it yet. We also tried carcassonne and it didn't really grab us. Still, settlers is always a good time - especially with backstabbing and desperate power-grabs.

Does anyone else make robots out of your unused cities, towns and roads in Settlers?

Kadath 02-03-2008 08:04 AM

We've been playing Arkham Horror lately. That is a fun but extremely challenging game. I think we win about 25% of the time.

Siege 02-03-2008 08:49 AM

I play go and settlers pretty often.

I tend to make buildings out of my unused settlers pieces.

I have to admit I've never heard of most of the board games being mentioned in this thread. I like more traditional board games like Scrabble or Cranium.

Nisses 02-05-2008 07:03 AM

I really like Shogun (or Wallenstein, same game really), Warrior Knights and Settlers of Catan.

I'm planning on trying out A Game of Thrones tonight, and maybe the World of Warcraft boardgame this weekend, provided I find enough free time (seems that thing eats up 5-6h easily...)

Axis&Allies is a bit too ... epic nerd battle I believe was the term? Can't really seem to actually play that one out.

Heard some good things about Puerto Rico and Power Grid (both from the same company) but have yet to find it anywhere in a store around here.

Just checked that site out. I had no idea there were that many different board games.

I really like thoughtammer, but http://www.boardgamegeek.com (radioguy mentioned it earlier) is a better resource for finding out about games. Their ranked list of board games is interesting to browse. They also offer a variety of different lists (top ten board games to introduce people to board games, top ten board games for kids under 6, etc.).

abaya 02-05-2008 08:40 AM

Ohhh, how I miss playing Settlers of Catan!!! Had to leave our board in PA when we moved to Iceland... may just have to bring it back when we make our American pilgrimage.

Does Scrabble count? That's probably my #1 game, both with friends and hubby. :)

inBOIL 02-05-2008 11:14 PM

I used to play board games with my college roommates all the time, but since I graduated I haven't met anyone else who likes them.
Balderdash is one of my favorites, as is Axis and Allies.

777 02-14-2008 01:22 PM

Board games? I think that's all me and my buddies do these days :)

Let's see, there's Zombies!!!, which is a parody of counts less horror movies (and it's expantion, Zombies 3, Mall Walkers is awesome). Axis and Allies and Risk that I've played with my cousins on holidays. I miss playing Nuclear War where your goal is to kill millions of your opponent's population. Munchkin, which is itself a parody of D&D, and it's many spinoffs, like Super Munchkin (play as SuperHeros), Munchkin Bites (plays as vampires and werewolves), Munchkin Fu (play as Hong Kong Kung Fu heros), and Star Munchkin (it's a cross between Star Trek and Star Wars).

sapiens 02-14-2008 04:47 PM

I have Munchkin, but I've only played it once. I enjoyed it, but I think that you have to be a bit of a geek to appreciate it. The other couple with whom my wife and I regularly played games moved to Colorado. Damn them!

Perhaps when I'm done with my current course and move back to where I can be sociable again!

rlbond86 03-03-2008 01:16 AM

Oh man, do I love boardgames.
Settlers of Catan, Puerto Rico, Carcassonne, Time's Up!, Blockus, Twilight Imperium, and Citadels are my favorites right now, but I really want to pick up Race for the Galaxy and Shadows over Camelot.

i had race for the galaxy and traded it away for mystery of the abbey. i just wasn't feeling the big learning curve and all the iconography. it's basically san juan with some juice, so i was more than happy to get rid of it. from what i've seen....you either love rftg or hate it....i'm in the latter!
