Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)

So I want to get everyone's opinion on this, for those that have gotten a chance to play it. I think it's just a fantastic game and is SUCH an improvement since Sunshine.

Then again, Sunshine = total crap imo.

What are some of your likes/dislikes about this game so far?

I'll probably put my hands on it for the first time this evening. Considering it just got an 11/10 from an Italian gaming magazine, I'm pretty eager.

Looks good, but then what do you expect from Miyamoto.

The Italian review where it gave it 11/10 is such crap BTW. 10/10 graphics? Where do you draw the line? What does Bioshock get if this game gets a 10? 11/10?

Some people are saying the Italian magazine actually goes up to 12 which would make more sense.

Thus far it is a great game. My only quarrel is the lack of a punching button. I really liked that from Mario64. I really like the long jumping from one side of a planet to the other though.

So far the Dynamics of the game is something I have never experienced before. It puts a whole new spin on this type of third person action. I really like the fact that you get to walk around "planets" and see them rotate under your feet. VERY creative!

How is the multiplayer aspect? Is the second player boring or would a fiancee enjoy it?

The multiplayer isn't terrible. I tried it out with a friend who doesn't really play video games. She seemed to enjoy it.

Essentially, the second player only controls a cursor on the screen. They can collect and shoot your star bits, freeze enemies in their tracks, and make mario jump and spin. Unfortunately, there are plenty of levels where the second player is useless.

Personally, I wouldn't mind being second player, but I think it really depends on the person too.

I agree with Ironpham.

It depends on the person. I played second player and got REALLY bored. My GF is playing the second player and we are having a blast. She actually called me this morning just to ask if she can come over and play Mario Galaxy together. She's not very good at games, but enjoys this because it's something she can handle and we can do it together.

Not to mention, it makes the game easier with two of you. I started a second file and played by myself, and I ended up with far less "Star Bites" playing by myself.

Ahh yes, the wild fiancee, an indigenous animal to nearly all habitats. Some say they can be tamed, however the vast majority of people seem to dislike their presence even if they are.(see also: My Cousin Vinny) One could say a fiancee may like SMG, but as with all creatures, YMMV.

I'm sure your fiancee would love it, as most people seem to. It does have a multiplayer aspect, but it isn't considered one of its best features.

Is there anything that looks better on the Wii?

*sigh* I've created a monster when I asked her to play it with me ;-)

I love this game... although, I just got my Wii last week so it's also been somewhat of a curse. The awesomeness of this game has spoiled me and I am completely uninspired to buy or rent any other games besides Guitar Hero. So hopefully both of these will hold me over until SSBB and Mario Kart Wii.

It could have been the weaning while playing SMB on Nes. Maybe it was the formative hand-eye coordination pathing years of SMB3. I'm certain that the elementary school SNES SMWorld dominance helped, as did the teen-aged Mario64 practice.

I bought it Saturday morning. We had a dinner party/games night. It was cold out, so we never moved onwards to the outside. The Wii was broken out around 7. Mario Galaxy was completed a few hours later, a tag-team event. Sure, we didn't get much more than half the stars, but I was amazed at how un-challenging the entire game so-far was. Partly drunken mid-twenties couples found it too easy.

Very pretty, very fun, vary innovative. I was laughing out loud about half an hour in when I was racing on a water-track-planet on a ray, and swearing as I tried to roll ontop of a ball. But all said, I expected more frustrating falls and fireballs of death.

Just keep running in circles around him, just like every other boss. If he throws out more than two bombs, shoot #2 or #3 with a bit. Knock out the ridges he throws up, then circle. Meh. Took me an extra 90 bits and too much time looking at the map to get the daredevil comet there.

My one complaint with this game so far is it is way to easy. Very few levels are challenging (and not in the jump puzzle sort of way). Most puzzles are completely 1 dimensional and are very simple to solve. For reference I just passed the ghostly galaxy last night and am hoping it will get more difficult.

What I really need is a good action RPG. I can't wait for the first zelda made specifically for the wii.

I've got about 20 stars so far, havn't sat down and had an all day gaming session (new years day me thinks, slap the mrs on P2) though.

It does look fun, sometimes running around planets really screws with my directional control, i want the git to go foward and instead he runs backwards, round to the back of the planet then goes in circles without me moving anything. I miss being able to punch stuff though, sure the spin attack is neat, but i would really like to smack a luma in the face at times...

I had the same thoughts, but once you get closer to the end of the game, it gets significantly harder. You can beat the game at 60 stars, and it's extremely easy to do, but I don't think you've *truly* beaten the game until you have all 120 stars, and that is extremely hard to do. There are a few comet challenges that I still can't beat, after spending dozens of lives trying. I was going to write it off as "too easy" when I beat it at 60 stars, but the later galaxies really provide much more of a challenge.

Finally found our Wii today, and the Super Mario Galaxy is one I was thinking about getting in a couple of weeks (cash flow). I guess you'd all recommend it?

I've never been a gamer, unless PC games like Leisure Suit Larry and Myst would qualify me (also probably the last ones I've played, other than Scrabble and word games), but found I really enjoyed all the sports that came with our unit. My daughters and I were giggling for hours!

But I was thinking about getting a couple of games that wouldn't be too tough for me. They're asking for the Mario game and I'm looking to see what else they offer that I might enjoy.

If you can handle Myst, then you should like Zack & Wiki, since it has point and click adventure puzzle elements in it. I made a thread on the matter.

Mario Galaxy does have a limited co-op mode, so even if you find you cant play it, you can help out.

Glad to see you say that. My impression of the game so far is great, but a bit too easy. Good to know there's some challenge up ahead.

Wow... I love this game.

It takes on new gameplay mechanics, camera work, and control interface but still "feels" like Mario. It's truly a successor to the great Mario titles in that it keeps what was fun about them but allows the player to interact with those principles in several innovative ways.

Graphics are the best I've seen on Wii and (even on my HDTV) on par with some XBOX360 games. The music is simply incredible... a great blend of the classic whistle-able melodies along with a smattering of epic orchestrations.

I've recovered 117 stars so far. Considering that only half that number is required to complete the game... that should be a testament to how *fun* this game is. The quick-pacing and constant positive feedback that comes with collecting a star or uncovering a galaxy keeps me glued.

My only complaints are about the difficulty. Since you pretty much have your pick of the galaxies after a small time investment, it's very easy to cherry-pick the easy stars for a quick completion. Would have preferred the designers set the limit at 80-90 stars. Also, a great many of them fall into the "easy" category... too few pose a real challenge to anyone familiar with 3D Mario platformers (though a small handful are genuinely difficult).

The platforming genre isn't the dominant force it once was, but you'd be hard-pressed to argue this isn't the ultimate 3D platforming game of all time.

So I beat the game last night, bowser was a bit easy. The first time i faced him I didn't' have the life mushroom and still got him to the last hit before I died. Faced him again and beat him soundly. I only have a little over 60 stars (I haven't even entered the last galaxy yet).

I plan to go get the rest of the stars over the next few days when I get a chance.

One thing that bothers me is that in order for me to see the entire game I have to Spoiler: collect all the stars again but this time with Luigii..... thats kindof lame but it is the only way to unlock the 121'st star....

I got this game for my kids for Christmas. I thought it would be better than a Ratchet & Clank redux. So far it's boring to me, and not to mention it has those inane Nintendo characters & music (Mario etc).

As for the Wii itself, I've noticed that they have grandfathered in a lot of details from MarioPaint.

It's not really fair to call it a Ratchet and Clank redux. Although I agree with Insomniac that Nintendo "borrowed" a few gameplay mechanics from Ratchet and Clank, the way the games are actually played are very different. Ratchet and Clank doesn't focus on the platforming aspect like Mario does, it focuses more on the third-person shooting and killing enemies aspect. When I play Ratchet and Clank, I feel like I'm playing a frantic shooter, almost like Serious Sam. Super Mario Galaxy feels completely different to me, although that's just my opinion. Pretty much every 3D platformer since 1996 is technically a Mario 64 ripoff anyway.

If you think the character of mario is inane of course you won't like a game called Super MARIO Galaxy. Also, if you thought it was going to be like a new Ratchet & Clank, sorry.

Also, the music in SMG is amazing... I don't understand how anybody could call it "inane", it's the first Mario game to have a fully orchestrated soundtrack. The music is epic and beautiful, and only helps to enhance the atmosphere of the game. Are we even talking about the same game?

A friend got this for my brother for Christmas and we've both been playing. It's a bit easy for a veteran gamer, but has all the fun and charm of the Mario games. Even in my mid-20s, I had the same smile on my face when I started playing as I did when I got my N64 and saw Mario in 3D; I still react similarly to the camera angles, but with a more diverse vocabulary of profanity. I love this game and would recommend it to anyone.

On a side note, player 2 making Mario jump at inappropriate times is the new Battletoads level 2 wrecking ball. Whoever does it laughs with childish delight while the victim does his best to punch player 2 in the genitals.

Sorry, seems like I touched a nerve, but it is only a game. For the record I didn't like the newest Ratchet and Clank either, agreeing with CyC PL that it was just a frantic shooter.

The reason that I bought the game was because it was so highly recommended as the best way to experience the Wii effects and controls, characterization notwithstanding. And to be sure, the kids ( all - 18 year old, 15 & 10 year old) like it. But then they like any video game.

I'll take another listen to the soundtrack, but all I recall is the Nintendo Tetris music. So my brain must be substituting in its recollection. Epic and beautifully orchestrated sound track? Wow, I must be missing something.

I'll actually try playing it in the next couple of days (gotta admit, hockey, work and grocery shopping is going to provide some challenges tho) and then report back in what I will try to state in as honestly unbiased opinion as possible.

and tell me it sounds anything like the Nintendo Tetris music. All of this game's music is orchestrated similar to this one. To me, the game is fun, but it's the music that makes me feel like a kid again.
