Portal (SPOILERS)

So being a lunatic I've just about completed the Portal storyline (I think). Spoiler: I'm at the end boss now. Just need to figure out how to kill it. I got to the little platform and I see the open panel, but getting the robot to fire rockets into it with portals doesn't seem to accomplish much and I can't figure out what to do from there. Did anyone else get here yet?

I should point out that the whole point of the portal concept, as far as I can tell, is to allow people to create puzzle levels. There are bonus levels that I haven't gotten into yet, and it's very possible that I'm wrong and I'm not at the end.

It depends how you bound the puzzle, but this puzzle I am in has taken quite a bit of time. But I don't want to say any more or it will be spoileriffic.

Killed the last boss last night...the end credits and the song had me giggling maniacally.

The question I have: other than the fact that Spoiler: Black Mesa is referenced a couple of times, is there another tie-in to the HL storyline that I missed?

[Edit]
Apparently, they had set up a site beforehand that resembles an old DOS based computer terminal. You can type LOGIN, use any username, and use PORTAL as the password. This will allow you to access an application page (type DIR to see the filename) with some telling questions, and certain letters will sometimes flash to create string that, if you enter it (see spoilers below), will show a camera view and some more backstory. There is also a username and login that you find in-game to access another file that has a timeline of Aperture Science.

It really doesn't do much but add to the backstory, but if you're a story nut like me it's worth a look.

Site:
ApertureScience.com

Spoiler:
login: CJOHNSON
p/w: TIER3
special string: THECAKEISALIE
Application pages: APPLY
Timeline: NOTES

The song is indeed hilarious. Now on to the bonus levels!

Side note: I cannot even wrap my head around designing levels for this game. But I guess it's the next step, like when FPS games first introduced jumping.

According to the Steam Community thingy, I finished Episode 2 in about six and a half hours. Meanwhile, Portal -- the game that takes about half as long to play though -- is currently at 15.7. And I'm still playing around with it. I'm going through a third time now, attempting to get all the cameras for the achievement.

I've finished all the advanced maps and did all the portal challenges (with plenty of room for improvement, mind you), and there's still the timed run and step count challenges which I've barely touched. I've also been watching Youtube videos just to see the neat things people have figured out about certain sections.

I'm fascinated by this game. To call it a "pleasant surprise" would be an understatement

I just have to chime in with Portal is now my Game of the Year. Yes, the avg completion time is only about 2.5 to 3.0 hours, but I still loved it. The ending song was the icing on the cake.

Secondly, anyone gotten past the gold challenges yet? I'm seriously wondering if I'll be able to get gold on everything without help.

Edit: For those that have beaten the game and want the ending credits song it's linked below. For those that haven't beaten Portal the song does have some spoilers.

I finished the campaign itself in about two hours, including a slight detour to pick up my Terminal Velocity achievement. I've now spent a total of 8.3 hours in Portal according to Steam, working on the achievements. I've got all of the regular ones except Camera Shy and I'm working on the Challenge level ones.

I've got Golds for Least Portals on all six, now working on steps and time. I'd have paid the full $50 for Portal alone, definitely my pick for game of the year. Whenever I get done w/ Portal and make the swap to TF2, add me on Steam: Winterspite.

That was an awesome experience! I really did not expect much from the game and it blew me out of the water.

Just in case anyone is wondering, I believe that song is written by Jonathon Coulton. http://www.jonathancoulton.com/

He has a bunch of other songs with a with a similar feel to them.

Speaking of "feelings". Did anyone else get the Douglas Adams vibe from this game?

THAT is what I was trying to put my finger on. The best example to me was when, after giving a technical explaination of the conservation of momentum between portals, Glados (or whatever the computer voice's name is) says "In layman's terms, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out".

And now that I'm up to the Silo in EP2, I pose this question:
Is the character we are playing in Portal Eli Vance's wife?

Look at yourself in Portal, look at the picture in Eli's office in the silo...there is a resemblance between the characters...

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/9721280@N08/1573203616/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2312/1573203616_88afbab347_m.jpg" width="143" height="240" alt="HL2 Portal 02" /></a> <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/9721280@N08/1572315015/" title="Photo Sharing"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2145/1572315015_b2515d18a5_m.jpg" width="162" height="240" alt="HL2 Portal 01" /></a>

I'm too much a sucker for story, time to go back and play now

I agree there's a resemblance, but it's not exact. Eli's wife is Asian and the Portal character looks more Hispanic. Besides, your character in Portal is an android, if GLaDOS can be trusted (she can't).

Yeah, I'm probably reading too much into it, although there is a point when you get the second part of the gun where GLaDOS says something along the lines of "the gun is now worth more than the organs of..." and then a voice recording that I'm presuming is the character we are playing speaks an asian-sounding name.

And the leg enhancements on the character look just like Eli's prosthetic leg...

Eh, maybe finishing EP2 will shed some light on any connection or lack thereof, but most likely it will not

1) Portal is amazing.
2) So is TF2.
3) My steam account is either xav400 or xav400"at"gmail.com
4) I've completed the game, the boss was easy after standing around and listening to GLaDOS talk.
5) The song has MANY hidden meanings.....

THE CAKE IS A LIE!

The Steam store is going to be selling companion cubes, I'm gonna buy one

Actually, I just replayed the game with the commentary and I am pretty sure GLaDOS, says SUBJECT'S HOME TOWN, not a specific name of a person.

Ah, then I'm definitely reading too much into it

Such an enjoyable game, I wish there were more. I tried the unlocked levels...those are quite a bit harder than the last part of the game was, and are actually a little too hard for my aging coordination skills.

Spoilers ahoy! I've heard a lot of speculation about the story and this seems to make the most sense to me.

Spoiler: GLaDOS is created to help improve the research being done so Aperture can compete with Black Mesa but she goes rogue and releases neurotoxins into the enrichment center. A morality core is installed to prevent that but she ends up closing off the center and trapping the humans inside to be tested. It's likely this happened on Bring your Daughter to Work day, and your character in Portal is one of the children who came along but is now grown up.

Humans are tested until a working portal gun is produced. A previous test subject, possible another daughter, goes through the tests but takes days or weeks or solve the puzzles hence the references to passing out from thirst, the hidden nooks and crannies with writing, food and water. Eventually she escapes the testing chambers but ends up dying before getting to GLaDOS.

GLaDOS is aware of the Combine invasion but does little about it. She constantly says she wants to stay inside, doesn't like the outside. She also sends the Borealis to a random spot to prevent the Combine from getting the portal technology. Aperture Science's portals are far superior to the Combine and Black Mesa versions, we all know what happened when Black Mesa created a portal right?

Lokus, good speculation. It ties in nicely with Ep2. Have any of you read the Steam community forums? Loads of good gossip there.
The end song, I didn't mean hidden meanings, that was a miss-thought, but most of the sentences have DOUBLE meanings. That's what I meant to say.

Oh...My...God.
I bought this game a few hours ago, watched the file download feverishly...hoping it could run on my laptop. I figured if HL2 could, so could this.
Well, I run HL2 at a pretty high resolution, with some graphics settings on medium, and even on large maps I get a pretty smooth fps rate.
Here it was unplayable until I lowered it to the lowest resolution. Now it's ok, but I'd be happy with a few more frames per second...Sometimes I can almost count them, when the area is loaded with objects, especially energy balls.
Now, as for the game itself, I freakin' love it, and can't wait to get my desktop back so I can run it on there. I played levels 1 through 19 straight from the moment it finished downloading and installing, and the feel of the game is awesome.. You catch yourself with a grin, because it's funny, but the voice makes you feel uncomfortable at the same time...all mixed with a feeling of claustrophobia.
Very cool. I guess we'll see next if this PC can handle Ep.2 (which I really hope it can) and TF2(which I think it can't).

Just went over to my friend's house for some Halo-ween, but instead he said I had to try out just a little bit of Portal.

3 hours later I was enjoying one of the greatest songs I've ever heard.

Safe to say that this game is purely awesome. Too many times I had to put my head in my hands and just sit back while my brain regained its steadiness.

Should I make a note here,
saying, "HUGE SUCCESS!"?
You played for the good of all of us,
Except the ones who ain't here.
But there's no sense crying over every left member,
You just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake.
The gaming gets done,
And you make a new map for the people who are still alive.

Has anyone checked out aperturescience.com lately? It's got a little looping holiday video on the front page, complete with a choral version of Still Alive (the Portal end theme).

Fun things:

Spoiler:
The big stack of crates from the Half-Life games on the far right.

Hiding behind them, a turret.

On the mantlepiece is the gnome from Epidsode 2 (I hate you, little gnome!)

The stockings have the Lambda symbol from Half-Life, The Portal logo and the TF2 logo on them.

Leaning by the fire is Gordon's crowbar.

The ornaments on the tree are all the different classes from TF2.

And, of course, the cake and weighted companion cube.

Agreed, the humor is a bit juvenile (sp?) and the part at 2:36 was probably the funniest to me as well. I thought it was creative and entertaining and had nuggets of laughter despite the level of humor though
