fallout 3

i'm excited about fallout 3, coming sometime (hopefully) next year. the thing i'm a bit "concerned" about is it will be a first person game, although still an RPG. i like the top down view, and it will have a third person camera, but i doubt i'll use it. still, i'm pretty stoked for it. i hope it's as good as fallout and fallout 2.

a decent article on it is here

I am very concerned about this also. It mentions both FPS and turn based action style gameplay, but if you can skip one completely, then it seems unnecessary, more like its just there to hide the fact that is IS a shooter.

The problem is, we really know very little about how it works in practice, which is something that gameplay videos should clear up.

I'm excited as well, and broke out my old Fallout 1 and 2 games to replay in anticipation. Man, I really hope it doesn't suck.

Well keep in mind the dev team behind the game are the same people responsible for The Elder Scroll games. Those games are designed in first person even if they do offer a third person camera option. It sounds like the team is sticking with what they know.

Yeah, this has somewhat annoyed me. Like, I'm thinking about not buying it. I have almost no interest in FPS games.

FPS games almost always give me motion sickness and I'm unable to play them. It has something to do with how the camera rotates and sometimes the headbob. There's only been a few exceptions and even those end up makin me sick after playing them long enough.

I'm looking forward to the game, but I kind of suspect I'm not going to be able to play it much.

Yeah, I'm still tempted by this. It's not even the First Person aspect that really throws me. I just want to know what happened to my turn based combat?

Where have all the turn based RPG's gone? Does only Japan love them any more?

I'm buying it anyways, no matter what out of any ounce of hope its somewhat like Fallout.

I already long ago requested off the 28th as a day off. My local GameStop is doing a midnight release, and its fully paid.

Hell yeah.

I'll tell ya what happened - CPUs faster than 266Mhz. Heh, it's still somewhat there. There's some gameplay videos on Xbox Live, if you have it, or around the net. It's turn-based inspired, which I guess is the best way to describe it.

Really, the way you should be looking at it is this; don't buy Fallout 3 if you want to play 1/2.

Steam is one of the best things for PC gaming in the recent years.

As for the online-requirement, you agreed/signed to that when you created your account.

With Fallout 3 so close has anyone spotted any professional reviews? I've only managed a few but they were by small independent sources. They either gushed and gave the game a 10 without reason or condemned it for not being true to the source material of the first two games.

Anyone find any none-heavily biased reviews? At this point the game is a day one rental instead of a day one purchase.

Well, mainly I'm a fan of the original two games under Black Isle & Interplay. With that in mind I've recently ended my media blackout on the game and started looking around for reviews and previews of final & near final builds.

What I've found is tons of polarizing opinions with no middle ground and what's worse is it's often hard to separate the biases in some of the writing. The impression I'm left with is this: Fallout III is a good rpg, but a lackluster third Fallout game. Does that make sense?

Perhaps the new team really didn't get what made Fallout, well Fallout. Perhaps the team did get it, but they were forced to make III more commercial & consumer friendly. On the flip side maybe the reviews I've found are looking at the old games through rose tinted glasses and III is a wonderful successor. Still all of this speculation is coming from small media outlets & blogs as the big boys have yet to post any official reviews of the finished game.

So in the end, it's too many mixed opinions from the little guys and no perspective from the "professionals". That's why I can't throw my hat in the ring on Day 1.

So I'll rent first and judge for myself. If the game is a wash I saved $52 and if it's worth owning I only lost $8.

Just found this out last night, for those looking to buy the game and the strategy guide. Circuit City giving out $10 gift cards and a mini guide when you buy Fallout 3.

The official guide from Prima is $20. The mini-guide has a coupon inside which drops the price of the official guide to $9.99 (actually the coupon takes 25% off the official Prima guide's price, but Circuit City fliers say the guide is $9.99 with the coupon, ignore what the coupon actually says and make the store honor their flier).

So if you use the gift card, you basically get the Prima guide for free. You just have to pay the tax on $9.99

Edit: The mini guide comes with the regular version and the collectors edition, so anyone can take advantage of this.

yeah, some people are saying they don't like the VATS tactical combat in it but it sounds pretty awesome like it adds an RPG or tactical aspect to it, otherwise it might just feel like an FPS with some RPG elements.

BTW, I was able to find a collector's edition of the PC version. I must have that lunchbox!

It has its flaws, mostly things that overlap from Oblivion.

BUT they are quite limited and it really does have the fallout feel. (Not 100% mind you, I still want a true tile based fallout!)

Amazing game.

This coming from a Fallout 1 & 2 fanatic.

From another Fallout 1&2 fanatic, I have to agree. I've only got to play a few hours, but it's alot of fun so far. Just walking around and shooting Molerats in VATS is pretty cool.

Took out a supermutant with a 10mm pistol this morning before work. He scared the crap out of me, but I was able to take him down. Good stuff.

It does NOT feature level scaling. Everything in the game is what it is. Apparently nothing is even remotely challenging once you get to the level 19-20 range. The only way to really make things hard is to head off into random directions while you're still low level.

Personally, I think that's a good design, from your quotation marks, I assume you think so, too.
