New Grand Theft Auto IV Screenshots!
New Grand Theft Auto IV Screenshots
A few days ago I put down my reserve money for GTA IV for the X-Box 360, which is supposed to be coming out in October. The dude at the counter gave me a copy of the store/chain's official gaming magazine that had a good preview of the game. This game takes place in the present time in Liberty City. You play Niko Bellic, an Eastern European immigrant. It sounds like this game will be REALLY good.

I just hope they upgraded their distance rendering with the new models/textures. If there's one thing that pulls me out of the mood of the game it's a 50 story skyscraper appearing out of nowhere 50yards in front of me. Usually its the smaller stuff like vehicles, trees or people but it's still the most retarded lookin thing about the games. It's almost as bad as blowing up 70 cop cars, 2 helicopters and a tank, but when you go around a corner and come back it's all gone. That's not AS annoying but I would like to see the game remember the damage you caused for alot longer. Hopefully the graphics engine alone isnt taking up all the memory.
Oh yah they should base the story on The Departed/Infernal Affairs. That would be frickin awesome although it's been confirmed that it's not.. so whatever there's still hope for GTA5.. or 4.2 or whatever they decide to call it. oh yah those screenshots aren't as good as the video. Anti-aliasing ruins screenshots.

In the trailer it said that the content rating for this game was pending. Do you think it will be rated "E" for everyone?

If Sony would drop the PS3 to $400 I would buy one right now even without a killer app on it.

Couple of things.
First off, I know "Liberty City" is supposed to be New York, but you just don't see graffiti all over the subway cars anymore. But the bigger issue is that the visuals are just way too dark and grungy and dirty looking. New York has been that much of a shithole since the early 1970's. |

Owning both a PS3 and a 360 I would say that the PS3 is definitely worth the money. I never realized how fricken loud the 360 is until I actually played on my PS3 (which I have never heard make a sound).
But before this turns into a console war thread this game will rock on either platform (I just happen to be getting it for the PS3). I like the setting. Liberty City is not present day NYC, nor is it supposed to be. It is just using NYC as a starting point and does an excellent job of that. This game will be many hours of fun...

Not sure if you guys saw but IGN gave GTA4 the first "10" in 9 years since Soul Calibur for the Dreamcast. It got a 10 in every single category. Went and preordered it today for 360. Apparently the PS3 version has better graphics. Oh well, I'm not buying a PS3 until the MGS4 combo comes out this summer. I can't wait for Tuesday!!!!!!!!!!

My copy has been paid for in full for a little over a month. I highly doubt the framerate and pop-in on the 360 is that big of an issue, otherwise it would've gotten a lower score like all the shitty PS3 ports of past games. Besides, PS3 fanboys need something to hang onto since they're not getting the exclusive DLC.

I had this game paid off since the beginning of April. This is the first time since Silent Hill 3 was released when I was incredibly hyped for a video game.

I own a PS3 and I would recommend getting an Xbox if you're basing your choice directly on this game. More people playing online, and the 360 version will get DLC before the PS3. The PS3 will eventually get DLC (it's inevitable), but not right out the door like the 360 version, and it may not get the same DLC as the 360 version due to exclusivity agreements (probably timed exclusive like GTA3 on PS2).
But, at the risk of sounding like a PS3 fanboy, I don't really care about DLC. They're just squeezing extra money out of you for stuff that should have been in the game in the first place--the DLC is coming out parallel to the game. This means they've been done with the content for a while... they could have easily made it a part of the game. Not to mention the fact that the game is absolutely massive and has enough stuff to occupy you for a long time without having to download additional content. You're not really missing out on much regardless of which console you choose. |

I'd have to agree that buying a ps3 just for this game wouldnt be the best idea and will just lead to disappointment. The 360 game selection is just a lot larger. Also the only ps3 out right now is the 40gig ps3 which DOES NOT play ps2 games.
If you you REALLY want to get a ps3 over a 360 i would seriously consider waiting until the metal gear/80gig ps3 combo comes out in june. If its similar to the pervious 80 gig version it should play ps2 games. If you dont care about ps2 games then just buy a 360. You'd be missing out a large library of games otherwise. Most original xbox games are backwards compatible on the 360 and they are always adding more to the list.

Good grief, a seven page review? I've written research papers in college shorter than that. Anyway, I remember reading somewhere the 360 version had the better frame rate and the PS3 had less pop in. Pop in I can deal with, frame is the bigger issue imo. Here's to hoping the local Blockbuster gets a copy. Always rent first buy second, especially since I hated GTA III to SA (I loved Saint's Row). I'm thinking it's the targeting system that ruined it for me mostly and I've read good things about IV's new system. Only time will tell I guess.

Comparison summary:
IGN - For those wanting to know which version looks better, the edge goes to the PS3. The textures and framerate are comparable, but the PS3 has far less pop-in. The 360 has richer colors, but the PS3 has better anti-aliasing making it look a little cleaner. Because GTA IV can preload onto the PS3 hard drive, the in-game loads are faster. EGM - PS3 or 360 version: 360 for DLC, PS3 version looks slightly more vibrant and sharp 1UP - the PS3 version has the slightest visual edge Games Radar - the PS3's visuals sport noticeably smoother edges, along with a warmer color palette that makes everything look slightly more realistic. Gamespy UK - For those who have to decide between the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions, we should mention that these flaws are slightly less noticeable in the PS3 game.

If they do it won't be the same content as 360. M$ paid a hefty chunk to make sure of that.
