Alright, we have the two contenders: Two of the biggest games in PC history with their sequels seemingly going head-to-head in stores soon.

The Doom franchise is known for it's mindless violence, though id claims Doom 3 will be very different, and almost more of a survival horror game than a slaughter fest. That said, I'm sure I'll unload a few thousand shotgun blasts anyway. Half Life was a shining example of FPS potential, and the sequel looks like it'll keep up the legacy started with the original.

Graphics wise, I think the games are on par with one another - however, in different senses. Half Life's are far more realistic, shooting for a near simulation of real life and achieve amazing new heights in graphics. I think Doom's aren't quite as real and believeable, but also are designed less for realism than creating a very dark, creepy, and hellish atmosphere the game will deserve. Surrealism, I think is the big thing that Doom has over the Realism of Half Life.

Gameplay, while I can't talk about the actual details (I refuse to get the Doom 3 Alpha and I obviously haven't played Half Life 2) I can speculate based on information and videos. Doom 3 looks to be keeping up the hectic action of the first two games, but not in the sense of "Here's 50 imps. Kill them. All of them. At once," like in the past. Hopefully, the game will take on a more cinematic route than in the past, because the horror angle could be played up so well.

The original Half Life was another landmark game, setting the bar for titles such as System Shock 2 and Deus Ex which followed. Half Life 2 has the potential to be incredible, with the amazing physics engine (Something Doom 3 doesn't even come close to, I'm afraid) and graphics. The range of things demonstrated in the video Valve put out are simply astounding. Likely, Half Life will keep the crown of a "Thinking Man's" FPS.

But, what are YOUR predictions? Which will come out on top, Hellspawned demons, or alien agressors? Unprecedented levels of gaming realism, or quite possibly the scariest atmosphere in a FPS to date? Chainsaw, or crowbar? Bacon, Egg and Cheese, or Sausage and egg? Discuss!
