man i miss the old days

back in the 90's there were so many star wars games to love, so many space sims to love (and then to feel badly about because they'd fail so miserably because most people don't know what they'd be missing) that you'd never be bored if you were into those sorts of games.

older games i used to be totally in love with:

TIE fighter
rebel assault 1 and 2
jedi knight 2: jedi outcast (possibly my favorite game ever)
tachyon: the fringe
freespace 1 and 2
x-wing alliance
unreal tournament
crimson skies: high road to revenge

and finally:

freelancer.

the reason i isolated freelancer isn't because it's my favorite game (could have been a lot better, if it had lived up to 1/2 of what the developers initially set out to do). I isolated that damn game because i am literally pulling my hair out in frustration because i lost my copy...and i want, no need, to play this damn game again. i mean, most of my other favorite games are dead now (JK2 and all those space sims are some very fond memories and i so badly miss playing them against other people  ) but freelancer still has enough people playing on some of the servers hosting mods that i could easily relive some of the times i now look back on fondly. except i lost my goddamn disk.

best buy, circuit city, ebgames, gamestop and walmart no longer stock it. and i tried to order a copy online a few times and every time the seller said they'd have to get another copy to sell me...don't ask me how that happened.

so any suggestions on how to get this game again? replies appreciated and PMs are welcome.

Don't forget Descent!

RadRuss 04-17-2007 07:50 AM

I assume you've already checked eBay? I see a lot of "Freelancer: The Universe of Possibility" up on there, but there's a few others, too.

CyCo PL 04-17-2007 01:38 PM

Yeah, freelancer is a wonderful game. I feel old now, though. I don't really consider UT, or Jedi Outcast, or Freelancer to be "old" games, but I guess they're about seven or eight years old now...

MexicanOnABike 04-17-2007 03:30 PM

UT is almost 10years old! 98 i think. but i remember playing the original unreal which was out in 97? and ya, those space games kicked ass. now it's all about the generic rpg/rts/fps ...

CyCo PL 04-17-2007 03:58 PM

November 26, 1999... so... eight years old. Yeah, I had the original unreal that came packed in with my Voodoo3 video card, it was amazing... but then I played Half-Life and never touched Unreal again. But Unreal tournament still holds up today, I actually have two copies of the game because I lost one and bought another one for pretty cheap. I didn't uninstall it until UT2k4 came out.

MexicanOnABike 04-17-2007 04:37 PM

May 22, 1998. for unreal. which is the one i remember more at the time. but UT took over a bit after with the awesome multiplayer!

and I agree with you Cyco PL: even if ut had a few updates, the original UT is still awesome today. i have a copy on all 3 computers i use. instagib anyone?!

Willravel 04-17-2007 04:48 PM

You forgot Starcraft.

Freelancer

CyCo PL 04-20-2007 12:52 AM

I recently tried to get Freelancer to work with my widescreen monitor... no luck. :(

You can make it widescreen during the ship flight parts, but landing in town crashes the game. Double :(

westothemax 05-14-2007 05:34 PM

You mention space sims, but you didn't list Wing Commander. WC + the Special Ops floppies + WC2 are CLASSICS. I never got into any of the "newer" sequels. Although, WC: Privateer was pretty sweet too.

I still play X-Wing Alliance sometimes. It's hard to go back to the original X-Wing or TIE Fighter games after playing XWA.

Lasereth 05-14-2007 06:19 PM

Ha ha ha anyone remember The Realm, the very first MMORPG that became somewhat popular? It came out in 1996 and is actually still going today. I have a lot of cool memories about that game. One of the best character-driven economies in any MMO I've played and the soloability made it so addicting. Graphics were 2.5-D cartoon drawings that still hold up today because they're not 3D ironically.

Taltos 05-30-2007 10:33 AM

My two favorite games of all time:

Alpha Centauri

X-COM

I also remember liking this old game called Mean Streets. It came on three floppy disks.

Jinn 05-30-2007 11:47 AM

I definitely do Las.. I played for a few years.. I even re-downloaded it the other day thinking I might give it a try, just not sure I can deal with the fact of still having to pay for it. :)

I stumbled across Space Force yesterday, one I haven't seen before. I'll be keeping an eye or two on it.

troit 05-31-2007 08:17 AM

what about Pong and the old Duck Hunt (square ball "bouncing" around the screen)?

Pong isn't old, silly. It's timeless.

I think the original Unreal is one of the best FPS' ever. The editor was ground-breaking at the time, and is still better than a lot out there today. The gameplay was smooth and solid. Multiplayer was fun as hell!

/me sighs

The good ol' days!

Willravel 06-01-2007 08:19 AM

I always liked Goldeneye for a FPS, but Unreal was awesome.

Jinn 06-01-2007 08:53 AM

I fuckin' loved Unreal Tournament. I remember it was the first video game intro that really got me pumped up, too. I used to watch the UT intro every time I started the game.

I really want to find the text of the intro. Don't suppose any of you web experts out there could find it. I believe the corporation was Liandri Corp.

EDIT: found it, finally.

http://www.planetunreal.com/utguide/story.shtml

I guess the wording isn't that powerful. I think it was the combination of the cinematic and the narrator's voice.. although it did give me a chill reading it again.

Quote:

"In 2291, in an attempt to control violence among deep space miners the New Earth Government legalized no-holds-bared fighting.

Liandri Mining Corporation, working with the NEG, established a series of leagues and bloody public exhibitions.

The fight's popularity grew with their brutality. Soon, Liandri discovered that the public matches were their most profitable enterprise.

The professional league was formed; a cabal of the most violent and skilled warriors in known space, selected to fight in a Grand Tournament.

Now it is 2341, 50 years have passed since founding of DeathMatch. Profits from the Tournament number in the hundreds of billions.

You have been selected to fight in the professional league by the Liandri Rules Board. Your strength and brutality are legendary.

The time has come to prove you are the best; to crush your enemies; to win the Tournament."

Ripsaw 06-01-2007 09:07 AM

How about a video of the intro?

Youtube, what can't you do?

My favorite old RPG was Darklands. Horrible graphics, but great gameplay and HUGE world, and story. You could play that game forever and keep finding new things, and without a physical copy of the world map you would get so lost.

I can't justify paying for it now to have it not work anyway.

I miss the original X-Wing. I didn't even really like TIE Fighter, or X-Wing Alliance.

Kadath 06-01-2007 11:36 AM

I miss X-Com. I had it working on my 2K box and then the drive it was on went bad and I haven't been able to get it back.

Ripsaw 06-01-2007 11:34 PM

Kadath: I think I got what you need... PM me.

Confederate 06-21-2007 06:36 AM

the old X-wing and Tie fighter sims were the best!

Cynthetiq 06-21-2007 06:47 AM

you know I wax nostalgic about games from the past, then I look at them individually like Stunt Car Racer

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1..._Car_Racer.png

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...etiq/stunt.jpg

and then I see the same games dressed up today....
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v1...tiq/tmu018.jpg

and I think fondly of the old memories.

gameplay is pretty much the same, except now I can play with my ghost best time, multiple friends/foes, but what will they look like decades from now????

MexicanOnABike 06-21-2007 07:45 AM

cyn: what game is that!?!?!? plz post a link. it looks pretty cool!

Cynthetiq 06-21-2007 08:09 AM

sorry forgot to credit it...

TrackMania United which was just released in the US the other week. You can even import car models from NFS and other PC driving games.

I have been playing the free version TrackMania Nations, which has pretty much all the features to play on servers and create your own tracks.
