Dissapointed with the Wii software

I will admit that I did not do more research than what Nintendo ads provided for me. I assumed we were getting a slightly less powerful machine, but with capability for rich multiplayer, intuitive games, plus many earlier gaming titles. Well, I waited in line for a long time as many others did for this machine.

I'm getting more disappointed as the days go by and improvements are minimal. They finally released the Internet Channel, but it lacks to say the least. My machine locks up on a regular basis. Worst of all, many games are just animated little people/stick figures. I think they should have delineated between less than state of the art graphics and the 32 bit graphics of many titles.

The absolute worst part is the software. I've played a several titles for the machine. Most are very much not in depth. Redsteel has a great story line, but horrible acting, and a laugh for multiplayer. Essentially one mode with three maps. Zelda rocks but that was made for the Gamecube so I attribute the effort into making this game elsewhere. Call of Duty 3... no multiplayer whatsoever??? What the fuck? Need for Speed Carbon... multiple machines required for multiplayer? Nightmare.

I've many more complaints, but I'm not selling you my Wii that way, am I? I'm looking to offload my Wii and all of its peripherals, including a WifiMAX. If you are interested. Please let me know.

Uh, although the Wii controls have a steep learning curve and it looks only marginally better than NFS Most Wanted, you can play multiplayer with Carbon on one machine. I have done so a number of times (and have barely cracked the single player).

Perhaps you should take a harder look.

Wow.

The VC games look like they do because they're perfect emulation; right down to slower framerates on some PAL games. They look just like the originals do, pixel for pixel - and there's over forty on the VC in north America.

Notwithstanding that the decision to Wii-ify Zelda was made quite some time back in the development (it's not a quick port by any means), there are a few gems for the Wii already - even though it's been released only two months. I recommend Warioware and Excite Truck if you're after multiplayer fun.

However, as with all consoles released -ever-, if you're after a heap of quality titles to delve right into, don't be an early adopter.

I agree with hulk there, my wii makes me so angry and frustrated it has come close to oblivion on several occasions, not to mention having to completly change my wireless network system to one that was compatable with it.

There arn't that many good games atm, but wait until the spring with the likes of mario galaxy and super smash bros, then we'll see it start to shine.

Yeah everyone went apeshit when the Wii came out because A. It was available, B. It was affordable, and C. You acting like an idiot while swinging the remote is entertaining for everyone. There's really not that many good games for it, with Zelda being the only killer one. Some other titles are above average, but not worthy of how much praise the Wii is getting.

Lots of good stuff here. Sorry guys offering. I'm going to have to set the reserve at $73 at least.

Regarding multiplayer in NFS Carbon: I can't find it. All I've read is that you must have two machines. I've beaten it twice, but located no multiplayer option. Please direct me to the method for doing so.

As far as the VC games, I know. I love them. I've been playing the hell out of some SMBros and Altered Beast. I can't wait for more releases there. This is one of the best parts of the machine, how effective the emulation is.

I really do just get frustrated with the lockups, and truth told, I really love my Wii. Perhaps I just need some moral support to be more patient.

I'll check out Warioware and Excite Truck. Thanks for the recommendation.

I'll add that I do, 98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed, agree with you, as well, Lasereth. I actually enjoy swinging the controller around like an idiot. Zelda seems to have been designed around that controller with porting in mind. The controls are awesome in that game.

Thanks everybody.

Lockups - that sounds...wrong - our Wii has never locked up - not once. I would first check to make sure there aren't any 'environmental' problems (ie, it has plenty of room for air to circulate so it doesn't overheat, is connected through a surge protector (and try plugging it into a different outlet, just in case), etc), and then try to get it replaced. Come on, just because windows locks up, crashes, etc on you doesn't mean you should just accept it from your game console. :-/

My mini-review of the games we've got:

o Sports - fun to play with the kids - I wish there were a little more to the games than basic timing, but still not to bad. Boxing with the wife is a nice little workout, and a great way to get rid of those little bits of marital..stress. ;-) Also a great introductory game, since the basic movements are very simple.

o Elebits - this game is just weird. I haven't played it much, but it seems kinda fun. The wife is totally addicted to it. No more hot suppers ready on the table when I get home. :-)

o Zelda - Fun - but...the zelda series is starting to feel like they're making the same game over and over again. I wish the wiimote sword fighting were a bit more than 'jiggle the mote to swing the sword'...I have high hopes for whatever jedi/lightsaber game lucasarts gives us, though.

o Trauma center - This one is fun, but gets a little...weird...for my tastes. I kinda wish they'd focused more on the (not very realistic) doctoring aspect, and less on the sci-fi/magic/whatever plot.

o Rayman - lots of fun - great 'party' game, since it gets people doing *ridiculous* things. Fun, zany sense of humor.

o Super monkey ball banana something - This one I've only tried to play a couple of times - the controls seem *way* unresponsive to me...not sure if I'm just getting old, or if the game sucks.

That's what we've got so far. I'm really looking forward to metroid, though.

I've also downloaded some of the old skool games - the original zelda, sim city, and the original mario brothers - the games seem exactly like the originals, as far as I can tell....so if you 'miss' any of those games and don't feel like dealing with an emulator...

The internet browsing is pretty much what I expected - if there's a compatible keyboard that comes out, then it will be useful - otherwise it's just a novelty. A friend mentioned that since the PS3 has a USB port, a USB keyboard 'just works' - would've been smart/nice of nintendo to do the same with the wii - but I hope a wireless keyboard will be coming soon.

Heres a question, is there any graphics upgrade on the VC games? The only one i want is Super Mario 64, and if the graphics arn't better i'll just find the N64 instead of buying it.

If you can find an N64 with component video, then go right ahead

It's exact emulation - essentially the data ripped from an N64 cart. For ten bucks, it's still not a bad purchase.

And for me, thats what makes Wii deserve the praise that is is getting. My wife, although she had a SuperNes in her youth never touched my Gamecube or X-Box. I honestly think she has held a 360 contoller for less than 3 minutes, and has absolutly no appreciation for the quality of Gears of War.

But she loves the Wii. The Wii had brought fun gaming to people who aren't gamers. I've had countless game nights that used to come in two flavors. Me playing video games with my buddies, more often than not at their places without a female in sight. And Two, board games/bowling/mini-golf with a pair of, or a group of couples. Now, I've had game nights that include my wife AND video games, that are wonderfully fun, because of the Wii.

That is to say, I for one, am not dissapointed in the Wii software that I've used.

My Wii has locked up a couple times, it only happens when I'm not playing a game and just going through the wii home menu. Not really a big deal, my computer has locked up far more times than my Wii ever has.

I don't understand what you mean by this. Most Wii games are animated little people/stick figures? Are you referring to the Miis in wii sports? I own three games on wii (Super Monkey Ball, Zelda, Trauma Center), and I haven't noticed any stick figures. Are you talking about virtual console? The virtual console is actually old games, so the graphics are going to be kind of dated. The people are little because older consoles had sprite size restrictions, and they are animated because it is better than watching a slideshow.

but ya, it's too bad you're not enjoying the Wii as much as it was suposed to be. this is the reason i wait a few years for a new console. i bought my ps2 in 2005. by the time it was out, there was a HUGE list of great games at lower prices that i could just check out.

Ahh tits, i was hoping for graphics upgrade. If they bring out games like perfect dark (i pray to thee oh lord upon high, bringeth out thine holy game upon thee wii), which you could get a cup of tea between frames in high action sections, that should be good with the extra power. Or 1080 on GC, which got rid of all the cool bits of the tracks in multiplayer.

Damn dude, I absolutely love my Wii! The sports games graphics such but the game play is awesome. Zelda rules, Red Steel is a blast and I get to play many of my favorite old titles (Sonic, various Marios, Sim City, Alter Beast (frickin' Alter Beast man!), and so on. My roomie got a PS3 and after one night of having this in the apartment he is talking about selling it and buying himself a Wii.

I gotta agree with that. Red Steel is by far the worst release title for any system I have ever seen. I don't only say that because the controls confuse me either. I say that because of the terrible Engrish voice actors, the 4 whole multi player levels, and the fact that no matter what multi player character you choose, be it a green dinosaur or whatever, you have peachy man hands. That and it pretty much blows in the single player department, just because I really cannot get used to the control settings. All in all I was disappointed, I doubt very much if I will be picking up its sequel when it comes out.

I couldn't disagree more. I loved Red Steel. Admittedly most of things you said are true, but I though the Engrish voice acting gave it a campy appeal and the controls were fun/easy to get down. I guess I didn't notice the hands in multiplayer, but that's pry because me and my friends were enjoying playing so much. It's definately more of a classic FPS play style (more like Perfect Dark and Bond than Halo), but I preferred those games. I suppose it just comes down to what you're expectations were going in and what you looking for in an FPS.

Perfect Dark and 007 ruled, and should be obviously triumphant when compared to Red Steel. Those two games, on the multiplayer menu, let you select level, weapon choices, all kinds of rules and gameplay options. With Red Steel: you get four relatively small levels, and three fight modes, two of which are not much different than the first except added teaming.

I'm of the notion that one of the game options should be swords only... remember knives only in 007... lets go swords only in Red Steel. That'd be worth a lot of redemption points in my eyes.

I've been gaming for a long time, still play CS, and DoD on the PC, and have been playing a lot of games since the NES. I consider myself a gamer. Maybe not a 1337-speaking, everyday pizza ordering, angry compulsive gamer, but a pretty serious one. And I love the Wii.
And that's what's so cool about it. People have been playing the Zelda franchise since it's first game still love Zelda TP. And people who've never picked up a controller in their life love the Wii too.
It might be cheesy to say, but it brings people together. I was wii-boxing with relatives, and it just felt so different than your regular video games.
So cool!

To the OP, I would advise to wait a bit. I know, you might not be able to sell it for as much money if you do, but wait till big titles start coming. Super Smash, Super Mario Galaxy, etc. I'm sure you'll fins them as fun as I do.
Also, I just bought myself several Gamecube games and a controller, and they're great.

Well, essentially what it boils down to, with me, is that I don't like to wait. I understand why the wait is here, but in the meantime...

So, I camped out all night with my wifey in the freezing ass cold to get this thing. Loved it. Had some fun. Got bored. So, for now at least, I'm just going to sell it, purchase a game system that has some great titles on it already. Then when the Wii is all killer and kick-asstical again, I'll sell whatever I have and buy it.

I will say though, that it is a machine for which I could speak very highly. I only chose to be negative in this medium to yield the response that helped me make my decision, and it did. Over all though, the Wii is fantastic and surely it will be a great Nintendo success story when it is all said and done. Especially after I've paid them for the machine twice.

My GameCube was one of the things I offloaded before I got the Wii. I liked it, but why keep a GC in the house with a Wii/GC? Anyway, I've no intention of losing a great deal on the sale, and I'm assuming that the price on Wiis won't be going up. So, it seems logical of me to sell it, use that cash for something else in the mean time, then buy the Wii again at some point.

Anyways, enough said on the matter, as far as I'm concerned. I really do appreciate all of your input on the matter.

I'm pretty much bored of the Wii already... I've had it less than a month and I haven't even played it in two weeks..

I'm sure I'll go back and finish up Zelda, but doubt I'll play it much more after that unless some decent games start coming out for it.

It had plenty of decent launch titles. Sit back and soak up Zelda, Warioware, etc. March will be seeing the release of Mario Party 8 and Ninja Turtles. Plus Tiger Woods and the Mortal Kombat will be out shortly after that. There will be a steady stream of solid releases building up to Smash, Kart, and pry some killer Star Wars games at some point too.
