The great big I got a Wii and you didn't thread

I figured since there was one for the PS3 then why have not start one for the Wii as well .

So who got one today? I showed up at Best Buy at 11:10AM (store opened at noon) and there was a line all the way from the doors to around the side of the building. I figured there was no way I was getting one today but then I saw some blue shirts at the end of the line and decided I'd at least check when the next batch would be in. To my surprise they still had two left and they gave me ticket #102. I still had to wait until noon before the store opened and then it took another 45 min for me to actually go through the line to buy it but I got one. I also picked up Zelda and Red Steel plus an extra Wiimote, nunchuck, and 1GB memory card.

First impressions, Holy Cow this thing is tiny! I knew it was going to be smaller than the PS3 and XB360 but I wasn't expecting this. It's about the size of a standard internal DVD/CD drive for a PC. Setup was easy enough though you do have to download 2 large updates once you configure it for the internet. Well off to play Zelda.

My husband picked one up this morning. He was in at Target at 6 AM and they opened at 8. Picked up the Wii and Zelda for it.

I was also really floored how tiny it was too. I'm impressed though.... Wii Sports is really fun!

I got it through amazon, i was awake since 12 pst untill 8 pst when it became available. I got Zelda and a secon wiimote for it as well. I shall have it here in Guatemala on friday, and the PS3 on wednesday the 29th!!!
I love Amazon, the only way i had to get my hands on both systems was Amazon, and it was able to deliver!!!

I was at a Gamestop at 11:30pm last night, Preorder ticket in hand. I got the Wii, extra controllers, Zelda, Red Steel, and CoD3.

You're right about the size.. it's pretty surprising. Fairly solid though, which I guess is good

Zelda and Red Steel have impressed me to no end. I've invested about 7 hours in Zelda, 2-3 in Red Steel, and about an hour into CoD3. CoD3 is alright, and I'll probably get to it later, but right now Zelda and Red Steel are awesome.

Boxing is pretty damn fun too

I haven't had a console since the N64, but the wii is very interesting.

I was going to try to get one at Target, but the one in town already had a line going around the side of the building by the time I got there, so I decided to camp out on Amazon instead. After 8 hours of staring at the same page and refreshing every five seconds I managed to grab one during the short time they were available. It should be arriving on Tuesday along with a copy of Zelda, a classic controller, and another Wiimote.

So, impressions of Zelda anyone?

This would be my sole reason to pick up one, just to play Zelda, I bought a Gamecube just to play the Zelda games on it, and have really been thinking about getting a Wii just for Zelda until I get a PS3

Zelda is fun so far. The graphics are *not* any better than a top-end GameCube title. The fun factor is definitely there. The controller takes about two hours to get used to; by then, you are a wizard with it. The thing is DAMN accurate. Way more accurate than I would have figured. I can pin point down to about half a cinemeter on the TV from 5' away. The slingshot is cool, you aim with the Wii remote. The game is very similar to Ocarina of Time so far. I've only played about 3 hours though. Fun game, don't be looking for the wow-factor with graphics, though.

I managed to get a Wii and I have to say, I totally dig it. So far, it's proved to be a great party console, (i.e. the Wii sports that came with it, especially bowling!) and it's been a lot easier than I thought to get used to.

I haven't gotten to really play the Zelda game as much as I would like to but I do have to agree it really reminds me of the Ocorana of Time (sp).

Random question, does anyone know if they are going to make it compatable with the DS? Sorta like the PS3 and PSP?

Yes, they will be making it compatable with the DS, wireless, no cables needed.

They are also planning on releasing a Wii with DVD-playback capabilities at somepoint, however this version will have a higher price point.

I'm waiting until December 1 to get my Wii from Wal-mart because I have a special holiday discount as an employee that will give me a 20% discount on it. And being a broke college student that works at walmart.... I need all the help i can get when I'm wasting money on game consoles.

Any word on whether they will make add on stuff for those who buy the original?

I'd hate to go out and get a new system just for a DVD playback. I think the only reason to do that is if all the games go onto DVD format, and even then, an add on for the original system really would make Nintendo the most super company ever ...

Yeesh.

For those that got a Wii, how do you like the controls so far, watched a vid of them playing the bowling and they kept getting horrible spin and couldnt figure it out. Looked like alot of fun though. Also does that "strip" on the tv have to be taped on or just on some type of stand?

Bowling is a lot of fun. It's probably the best of the Wii sports that came with it. The spin is caused by twisting your wrist as you release the ball so it is controlable. The sensor strip has two adhesive pads on it that keep it in place on top of the TV.

Red Steel is a rental at best. It has it's moments but overall it controls poorly and is buggy. I've experienced several slowdowns and one complete lock up as well so far in about 4 hours of playing. I have only myself to blame for buying it though. It wasn't my first choice and I really didn't know much about it when I bought it but they were out of Call of Duty and Madden and I wanted something else along with Zelda. Definitely a waste of $50.

Edited: Went quickly too, amazon sold out of their allocation within seven minutes!

Probably nearer christmas (after the european launch on the 8th), it would ruin the point of a christmas release not to have more consoles in the stores by then.

The bowling is a blast. The movements required are eerily realistic, if you're good at bowling in real life you will immediately being playing very well in the game.

I noticed that the spin is about the wrist. So far, I haven't had any problems.

The only thing I need to get used to it the whole "enemy, move wrist to slash with sword" bit. Zelda entry level enemies never seemed so fast/hard when you are struggling to get used to the controls!

Rumors have been going around that Best Buy has gotten another shipment as well.

I'm playing Zelda and Red Steel mainly. Red Steel *is* getting a bit repetitive, but I've experienced no slowdowns, lockups, glitches, etc.

As said, Zelda isn't a graphics powerhouse, but it is a lot of fun. Sumo wrestling is TOUGH though.

A lot of people are bagging Zelda because it doesn't look as good as RE4. Don't be misled - the largest area in RE4 is a bleak, empty lake. Most of it is confined to tiny rooms. Zelda has a _massive_ draw distance, hence, a lower polycount/texture quality

Unfortunately when I got home, I was told it was a family Christmas present and all of it is now currently sitting in my closet until the 25th

waited about 1.5 hours for mine.

and heads up.. you should get about 30 hours out of the batteries on the wii-mote.

which leads to my next two thoughts:
i've got two complaints about the wii-mote.

1) doesn't have a battery pack
2) its expensive as hell. $40 for wii-mote and $20 for nunchuk *ouch*

But if you get a delux 360 you get it at a reduced cost. Delux 360 is the only way to go, big savings. My additional 360 remote is wired since that is the one the guests have to use

accelerometers etc. are expensive, i don't like it but i can see why it's a lot of cash

I guess it's too bad it has a battery pack, but i just bought a cheap charger that fits up to 4 batteries though so i can just swap em out when i need to, and it eliminates the need for a charging wire or a station (which would mean controller downtime)

Got my Wii a couple days ago... a friend that works at gamestop grabbed one for me on the second shipment, they were holding out for Black Friday, but I got mine wednesday night. Yay.

Also got Zelda, Trauma Center, and Monkey Ball. I'm just barely scratching the surface of Zelda, I'm kind of waiting until I have a full day off work before I jump way into it. I've mainly been playing Trauma Center, which is just an amazing game. The graphics are really nothing very special, and the story is your stereotypical japanese over-the-top manga-esque plotline. The cutscenes remind me of japanese dating sim games (yes, I've played one, yes, I'm a loser), but the actual gameplay is top notch. Really intense, and difficult but not unfair. It's one of those games where you can lose over and over, but still enjoy yourself and feel like you're getting better and more efficient with each try.

I haven't put much time into Super Monkey Ball, but my initial impressions are good. You move the monkey around by tilting the world, the world is tilted by tilting the controller. Along with the A button making you jump, that sums up the controls of Super Monkey Ball. Controller is held parallel to the floor, and you tilt it whichever way you want the world to tilt. The controls are extremely responsive and precise, and easy for anybody to pick up and play because it's so simple. The levels can get extremely hard though, but the simple controls make it so it's just you vs. the level, and not you vs. the controls AND the level.

Anyway, so far, I'm extremely impressed with the Wii. I have no regrets whatsoever for any of the 3 games I bought, which is pretty rare for me because I'm really cheap and try to buy as little as possble. Usually when I spend this much money at one time, I fall into a deep, guilt ridden depression. I haven't really had the chance to do that yet with the Wii, I've just been having too much fun playing it.

Woot! Just got mine today from Walmart. It was our second batch, we got 31 and I was 15 in line..... I spent the entire night there. They went on sale at 8 am. but 31 people were in line before 4 am. I'm totally stoked to try this thing out, too bad I have to get to class before I can really try it out. I was able to get it for 20% off due to the fact that I work there and had a special holiday coupon. Out the door with it for $213. No extra games for me yet, Christmas is coming
