Having trouble locating secret areas?

I have reached a point in this game where I can go no further. Shit.

Cousin came over tonight and figured it out. There was a pit with spikes at the bottom. I tried to jump it twice and died both times. He jumped it an made it to the next room (European catacombs).

The key to unlocking the third secret area (with the flames) is in the first secret area in level 7 or 8.
