First off, a little background for the question. A few years ago I dislocated my right shoulder (playing ultimate frisbee, it's a long story) and just recently I found out the tissue holding my shoulder in place is torn and needs surgery to be repaired. Afterwards my arm will be immobilized in a sling so first person shooters or any realtime game is out. I need some games because I will have a lot of time on my hand(s) and I've seen all my DVD's too many times. Any suggestions, new or old are greatly appreciated, I have Civ3/4, Heroes of Might and Magic 5, X-COM and Jagged Alliance already.

I have to agree with Temple of Elemental Evil. Also, if you happen to like those adventure games: Neverwinter Nights is similar.

You could try one of the * Total War games (Rome total war, medieval total war, etc). They're mostly turn-based; you *can* play the battles in real-time if you want to, or you can let the computer decide the outcome.

If you like wargames, I can recommend Hearts of Iron 2, or the slightly newer Hoi2: Doomsday. It's turn-based, and pretty deep.

If you want some fantasy and RPG element to it try Disciples (I played II, I think there's I-III). Disciples II came out a couple years ago so it should be pretty cheap by now too. It's an interesting mix of genres.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'm already enjoying Dicewar and Dead Awaken. I'm probably going to get ToEE and Hearts of Iron, I've heard good things about them. Only two more days to go, wish me luck!

If you like HoMM5, and don't have previous ones, I'd say HoMM3 is by far the best. Unless you want to go old school and get #2. All in all a great turn based series.

Great games stated above: Fallout series, The Temple of Elemental Evil, Total War series (with the XL mod for Medieval, it makes an awesome game even better).

Not mentioned yet: Diablo series or Titan Quest - you can play each of these one handed without any issue, as long as your index fingers functions fine that is!

And I cannot go without mentioning Steel Panthers. The latest incarnation (Steel Panthers: World at War) is 100% free.

And another game: Gary Grigsby's World at War. Think Axis & Allies on steroids.

You can't beat Fallout 1-2 among turn-based games.

Some of the rpg's at spiderwebsoftware.com are turn-based. It's shareware and there was enough free play time on the different games they offer to last me a few weeks. The Exile series is one of my all-time favorites.

Also, Gladius for XBox, etc was fantastic.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'm playing Hearts of Iron 2 and Temple of Elemental Evil the most. Some of the other games I passed on because although they may be played with one hand, the surgery was on my dominant arm making using the mouse very awkward. Fortunately I can also hold my DS lite somewhat normally and my fingers work just fine.

Lokus, I downloaded a couple games and thought of you.

Wodan - The Trial is a great tile based, small piece of freeware.

Hakaiman is a Japanese top-down stealth, shooter. Both are great.

That was gonna be my suggestion too. The way you can pause it in battle and take time to set up your attacks should suit you fine. They are amazing... albeit somewhat buggy games.

Yeah, I'll have to pick up the new Disgaea, I loved the first one. I already have both KotOR games. Fortunately, my arm is much better and I get the sling off in two weeks. Now I can use the mouse and keyboard for an hour or two at a time.

I only saw it once here, but have to also recommend Galactic Civilizations II. It kept me up til 5:30 AM the other night. (just one more turn...) Admittedly, it's more fun for someone who is into sci-fi. I would ulltimately recommend CivIV for history buffs, and it's very highly rated.

I'd have to say Wesnoth, open source turn-based game that's really simple yet really awesome. Warning: addicting. But since players contribute their campaigns daily (a bunch suck, a select few are gems and are officially recognized) it never gets stale. A quite decent multiplayer too, though it can get boring waiting for your turn.

If you have a GBA or a DS, I suggest, Final Fantasy Tactics Advance, and Final Fantasy 4-6 Advance. The latter titles are ports from the SNES. Classic games, with updated features

FF7 can be played comfortably with 1 hand on a keyboard
also mouse only interface of rpgs like nwn/fallout series fit the bill

nethack needs 2 hands(but lower speed is better for once)
