New Hardware: Nintendo DS Lite

Nintendo likes to be a little difficult on us from time to time, but we're stoked that after they decided to redesign the DS, then reneged, that they reneged the renege and went through with it anyhow -- though honestly, knowing Nintendo, it was an inevitability given their (and everyone else's) penchant for redesigning their consoles to drive sales. Anywho, their new Nintendo DS Lite skimps on the size and weight by shaving off 1/3rd of the bulk and 20-percent of the weight, and will apparently be released in Japan on March 2nd for ¥16,800 (about $145). It's important to remember, however, that the DS Lite we see here may not be the device that you actually buy, being that these are still considered to be design mock-ups. See ya soon, DS Lite, can't wait!Japanese release date: March 2, 2006

Weight: 218g (compare to 275g for the current Nintendo DS)

Dimensions: 133mm x 73.9mm x 21.5mm

For the Japanese-literate:

Man, the DS is to Japan how the iPod is to America. Release a newer, smaller version of the last gadget, and the audience will just eat it up. I guess, though, that if the DSLite is cheaper to produce than the original DS, then it's better for Nintendo. But I can't help thinking why mess with something that's already doing so well?

Edit: I wonder if this is still going to play GBA games as well?

From the article on IGN is appears that you will still be able to play GBA games. My question is, where did they move the power button to?

January 26, 2006 - After weeks of rumor and speculation, Nintendo today finally revealed its expected redesign of the Nintendo DS handheld system. Called the DS Lite, this new design will be released in Japan on March 2, 2006 and cost 16,800 yen (about 140 bucks US.) The redesign retains all the functionality of the standard DS, but makes things smaller, lighter and brighter.

The modified dual screen handheld has been tweaked into a smaller chassis. The new unit measures up to 133 mm wide by 73.9 mm tall by 21.5 thick. (that's compared to 148.7 x 84.7 x 28.99 mm in the original.) DS Lite weighs 218g, compared to the 275 g of the original.

DS Lite's biggest new technical feature is its updated set of backlit LCD screens. The system is brighter overall, and will give the user the ability to select from four different levels of brightness for viewing and/or battery consumption. A few other cosmetic changes were made to the new DS Lite -- there's a new hinge design, the power light was put on the left side of the hinge and is visible while the clamshell is closed, the mic is moved to top/center while the speakers are more centered, the Select and Start buttons are set on the bottom instead of top, and the power button is no longer on the front, and all of the dark button colors are changed to whites and grays. The cute DS logo is also placed on the front. Basic functionality, otherwise, looks to be identical to the original DS.

I will never learn my lesson, I guess. From now on, when nintendo releases something, I'm going to wait a year before buying it, because there will probably be a smaller, better version out by then. I'll bet they're already working on the "DS Micro" and are planning to release it once they've milked this new DS for what it's worth.

I see another Will Ferrell guest appearance on SNL if this ever catches on big.

Serious, dude. What technology, from Walkmans to mobile phones, to computers and CD players and televisions and mp3 players and basically everything else under the freakin' sun that uses batteries has not done this?

Don't be hatin'.
