Alright, so its not a gimme question. My alberta/mountain bias is showing.

Its on the Continental Divide, and as it is south of Banff, it also falls on the Alberta BC Border. At least I think it does. I tried to get to it once a few summers back, but the rangers have closed the bike paths and the hike was too long for my motivation. That winter we did a little light touring and made it pretty close, starting at just outside of Sunshine Village. We made it to an icefield south of this peak then were concerned about daylight and weather and headed out. I think its also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

edit; wait, if I was heading south, and the mountain was south of me, then I was north of the mountain.

Your hints are very detailed. But I'llhave to beg out of this. Can a mod get our forum back? maybe it will drive up participation.

From Peakfinder.

Quote:
---was the first man to reach the summit of Mount ---------. He summarized the significance of this well known mountain when he wrote, "Its massive pyramid forms a conspicuous landmark from almost every considerable eminence for scores of miles around, towering fully 1500 feet above its neighbours, and by its isolation no less than by its splendid outline commanding attention and admiration."

Although it can only be seen from one relatively lightly travelled roadside location in Alberta, Mount --------- has become one of the most recognized mountains of the Rockies. This is undoubtedly because of its distinctive pyramidal shape as well as the lovely glacier and lake which lie below it when viewed from its most photographed angle. Christened "The Matterhorn of North America" by early travellers, its profile is classic. The peak is visible from Buller Pond on the Smith-Dorrien Trail. From this viewpoint, it is the mountains height and massiveness which are most impressive and the "Matterhorn like" shape does not present itself. The east-facing cliffs of Mount --- rise over 1700 metres above the valley below.

A second roadside viewpoint is from Highway #93 in Kootenay National Park. An outstanding view of its distant summit may be seen from the Simpson River, 3.4 km north of the Simpson River footbridge or 2.7 km south of Verdant Creek (at Vermilion Crossing or Kootenay Park Lodge).

For those who hike and climb to the higher elevations, the mountain's easily identified shape together with the fact that it towers above its neighbours, makes ---- the most easily recognized of distant peaks. It is located on the Continental Divide, with Banff National Park to the east and Mount ---- Provincial Park to the west. With an elevation of 3618 metres, Mount ---- is the tallest mountain south of the Bow Valley, and one must travel north to the area of the Columbia Icefield to find a higher peak.
BTW Sticky, the 'dome' is north of Banff and is shaped pretty much as differently as one mountain can be shaped from another, as the one described above.

I'd rather give out hints on a platter than be thought responsible for stalling or killing the thread.

It is indeed Mount Assiniboine, Game on.

Yeah, not Edmonton, ours looks much better and our river valley is steeper and wider.

I'm going to note the sparse tall buildings and think it isn't quite the Manitoba one, so this has to be the Regina, Saskatchewan Leg.

You said it was taken before any of us were born, leads me to believe it was probably completed before any of us were born as well. I can't decide if it is a bridge or a giant wall of some kind, I couldn't see a building or wall being needed that is that long so I am going to go with bridge, probably train. That leaves me with one idea

Lethbridge Viaduct, aka "High Level Bridge"

Man, I hope you are wrong cuz I wanted to guess that so many times. I just couldn't match up the construction unless of course it has changed over the years. The viaduct looks more triangular in the base, this photo looks very straight.

I am gonna guess it is the construction of the Howe Truss bridge over the Pembina River at Manola. Noooooooooo wait......I changed my mind. My newest and more correctest guess is the Rochfort Trestle bridge in Mayerthorpe.

Both are sound guesses, but not what I'm looking for. This was also a project related to railway expansion, but it is a project more associated with Romans than early Albertans.

I think we've already had the Lethbridge Viaduct in this thread. There are some impressive pictures somewhere in the previous 2000 posts.

I'm also a structure nerd (Howe Truss!) and a Pembina valley local/fan, but this is the first I've heard of that bridge. Nice.

Also, go ahead and take the guesses, there are no penalties for guessing wrong. I don't return to the thread unless someone has posted and I tend to give out hints with each post.

I've been at work for a full 30 minutes now and I have done nothing but respond to emails. They keep coming in. Including ones from the TFP.

It is the Brooks aqueduct. It is pretty impressive; not Roman Empire impressive, but cool nonetheless.

Nice arctivle on the Brooks Aqueduct if you the time and interest to read it.

I'd guess the date is October 30, 1995.

I can't place the location yet. My first thought was just outside the gates of Old Quebec. I know I've seen that row of statues in person, but its been so long since I've been in the east, all the cities blend together.

So no, not in Quebec. I realized I was thinking of the 'hotel du parliment' and those statues are on the ground.

The Marie-Reine-du-Monde Cathedral, Montreal?

(Mary-Queen of the frickin World to the anglophones)

no way, this is downtown Montreal. Isn't that the Queen Elizabeth Hotel in the background? I think the date is as Bossnass said, just prior to the Quebec referendum.

The date is October 27th, 1995.

That is the Queen Elizabeth Hotel on the right in the background. I had to crop down the pic to remove the "Queen Elizabeth".
That is Place Ville Marie in the back on the left.
That is Mary Queen of the World Cathedral.

This makes it Downtown Montreal on Renee Levesque street in between Dorchester Square and Place du Canada.

Bossnass had it right.
