Actually, you're right, when I looked closely today, while the bridge appears to have re-opened to all of it's lanes, the pavement doesn't look like it's been given that smooth, permanent finish. So one more year? What exactly has been done/ is going to be done to the bridge to re-habilitate it? By the way, looking at the fourth black and white pic that you posted, is that the Brick Works? It looks like the whole area is flooded! ~~~~~~~ Just poking around for information of this particular bridge, I found some interesting things. This from sombody's recent blog: http://tpg1.com/blog/index.php/rob/c...idge_overpass/ Leaside bridge overpass Early this mornging, the Leaside bridge was closed. There’s no way to know for sure why (at least via the internet), but it’s a sure bet that it was due to a jumper over night. This returns us back to the old arguments against the luminous veil, the fence that has ruined the Prince Edward Viaduct. It is by most accounts ugly, morbid, and extremely expensive. The main argument against spending all that money was that people would just go to another major bridge. It appears to be happening. So now what? Spend more money and cage up another city landmark? It appears headed that way.

With regards to Leaside, I can tell you that it will be at least another year, if not more.
The job is however going well. A great deal of steel is being replaced, as is the entire deck, and the piers are being repaired. The deck may be done in a year, but the piers and the deck will not be. Leaside is actually higher than the viaduct and yes, people are jumping off. Leaside was not closed for a jumper as per that blog however, it was closed for 15 minutes to allow the bridge to be jacked up 1/4" and the old bearings to be changed out. The logic behind the fence on the viaduct is that suicide is sometimes impulsive and it will prevent that kind of suicide. The well planned out suicide can not be stopped by a fence. Personally, I think what they did to the viaduct is quite ugly. It cost around 7 million bucks too by the way. Has it worked on the viaduct? Absolutely. Has it reduced the number of suicides, I don't know. Last edited by james t kirk; 03-02-2006 at 07:46 AM.. |

The viaduct veil is ugly as sin.
I loved that bridge. I still do but it have been damaged with the addition of the veil.

I recall driving across a similar bridge in Quebec, just across the Ontario border on the way to Salaberry de Valleyfield. Or am I imagining things?

He he, finally got one that didn't get answered in two minutes. As you can see from the photo, it's a significant bridge and a land mark in the area. Do you guys need a clue? |

If I remember right, that building is on Toronto St. and started as Toronto's main Post Office, evenutally becoming the home of Hollinger Inc., Conrad Black's company.

The atrium at BCE Place in Toronto. It's one of the prettier places in Toronto. It's also the home of Astral Media (TMN, Family Channel, etc.).

That's the new monument to Alexander Wood, at the corner of Alexander and Church St. Look him up and tell me Canada has a dull history.

no problemo! Looking at the old pic posted by Charlatan, it looks like they removed the embossed "Post Office" that was on the front. There's a place around the back side of this building where I get my hair cut (Ivan's on Victoria). I took this pic on the way there.
