It is an airport (I think this is going to be a whole new category. Not as many airports as bridges though)

Leto 05-16-2007 07:42 PM

I say that this is Mirabel or Montreal international airport.

Sticky 05-17-2007 06:11 AM

It is the infamous and now defunct Mirabel Airport.

silly question: but since there is a remote possibility that a future move might affect my life and this place will be the first thing I see, if I do move...why defunct? :paranoid:

Leto 05-17-2007 11:43 AM

I think that the place was too far away from Montreal to effectively replace Dorval in a convenient manner. And just at the time when Mirabel could have taken off (so to speak) and become a major usage facility, the Quebec referendum fallout of the late 1970's caused an exodus of business to Ontario. This helped in the virtual decline in usage until nowadays it is used primarily for commercial traffic such as couriers etc.

Now, off to find an intriguing picture to post.

edit: here you go:

Hint: this is not in the maritimes.

Sticky 05-17-2007 05:18 PM

Read the wikipedia post.
Leto nailed part of it but until recently it still could have been the Montreal airport had the Montreal, Quebec, and Canadian governments invested in it (transportation to a from). It is really not that far from Montreal (35km) and the Trudeau (Dorval) airport is prime on island property that could be used for much better purposes.

There are takls of developing Mirabel into some type of shopping, amusement, resort type place.

Are you planniing on moving to Montreal?

By the way, I posted that graphic to show the relative size of Mirabel Airport (and the airport area).

Leto 05-17-2007 07:11 PM

Game on Sticky... interesting that this is supposed to be the last covered bridge left in Ontario, near Waterloo...

PhilMcGroin 05-18-2007 07:55 AM

Sticky 05-18-2007 08:14 AM

PhilMcGroin is correct.
It is Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal. This is where the Canadian Grand Prix is held.

PhilMcGroin 05-18-2007 08:58 AM

Leto 05-22-2007 12:40 PM

Phew. so Phil, Other than sleeping in my Chevette on the outskirts of Revelstoke, I have no idea about the area. What is the significance of Boulder Mountain? (my google skills only took me so far...)

Now, off to find a picture.

edit. Okay try this one on for size. is it obscure? I think not.

Daval 05-22-2007 01:05 PM

thats a pretty damn cool staircase. No clue where it is though :)

hagatha 05-22-2007 02:20 PM

Are those the stairs behind the Museum of Civilization in Hull?

Leto 05-22-2007 07:16 PM

They are not behind the Museum of Civilisation. In fact, they are not in either Quebec or Ontario.

Yo Leto,

Revelstoke is the snowmobiling capital of Canada, and Boulder Mountain is by far it's most travelled sledding area. We get out there several times a year!

cheers,
Phil
