Queen & Gladstone in Toronto?

fresnelly 07-24-2006 10:01 AM

Game on Leto!

The stone refers to the Rail bridge that Crosses Queen between Dufferin and Gladstone, rather than the ill-fated Queen underground line.

The Inscription reads

R.J. Fleming, Mayor
E.H. Keating, City Engineer
W.F. Grant & Co.
Hamilton Bridge Wks Co. Contractors

You'll find it in this picture sitting in the upper right at rail level.

Leto 07-24-2006 10:59 AM

Cool! I originally thought perhaps the Toronto Archives, but the stonework made me re-assess the guess. I recall driving through that underpass quite often, and had to go to a map program to make sure it was on Queen...

Here's the next one:

The word "subway" in railway bridge terminology refers to a rail over road type bridge actually.

Again, in railway bridge terminology, when you have road over track, the bridge will be referred to as an "Overhead"

As opposed to the more common highway terminology of over pass and under pass.

For example, north of Dupont, along the CPR's North Toronto subdivision, you have the Christie Street Subway, the Shaw Street Subway, the Ossington Avenue Subway, etc. etc.

Bit of railway trivia for you.

You can always get some screwed up looks when you refer to railway bridges and call them "subways". Though, amazingly, I have heard Joe Q. Public correctly refer to them as subways as well.

And another bit of info you might find interesting, the Queen Street Subway is scheduled to be majorly reworked. They are going to eliminate "the Dufferin Street Jog" which is where one must turn right on Queen, left on Gladstone, then right on Dufferin in order to go north continuously on Dufferin.

I only hope they don't wreck the stone work. It's an amazing example of fine masonry work, as is the King Street Subway to the south on the same lines.

GO Transit now owns part of that bridge and a large part of it is not utilized.

I believe you have the CPR Galt Subdivision (owned by GO Transit now) and the CNR Weston and Newmarket Subdivisions on there.

I'm pretty sure that sculpture is on the north side of Bloor St. E. between Jarvis and Yonge, infront of a big Insurance corp. tower.

Leto 07-25-2006 02:37 AM

Game on Fresnelly, that would be beside the Manulife building ( I think it's manulife, of the golf green front lawn)

Charlatan 07-25-2006 03:07 AM

I knew those ones! ...damn.

JTK... as always, great bridge trivia. Thanks. I love the Queen Street Subway and the King Street one just south.

If they do as good a job with the Queen as they did with King, it should come out OK.

Isn't this thread great for that? Gaining new perspective on areas that we've just glossed over.

Sorry TFP Canada. Been busy with work... and it seems that I've forgotten my photobucket password.

I promise I won't name any locations I recognize until I have time to contribute in a meanful way.

I'm certain someone has a picture to post in my stead.

The pedestrian bridge over Hwy.11 to get to Weber's Hamburgers near Orillia, ON.

I was going to guess either the Weber's bridge or the CN tower bridge, and then I found out it's actually both!

Fom http://www.webersrestaurants.com :

Quote:

In 1981 for traffic safety reasons, the Ontario Ministry of Transportation installed a boxbeam barrier on Highway 11. It became a semi-controlled access highway and southbound traffic could no longer gain access to Webers. In 1982 sales dropped by 25% because of the barrier and at this point the continued success of the Restaurant came into question.

After exploring several options, which would allow southbound travelers access to Webers, good fortune smiled on Webers. The opportunity presented itself to purchase a portion of the pedestrian bridge from the CN Tower in Toronto. The bridge across Hwy. 11 was erected in the fall of 1983.
This project which was the first and only private bridge built over a public highway in this Province included the purchase and rezoning of one acre of agricultural land for a parking lot on the southbound side of Hwy. 11, the doubling of the size of the Restaurant, as well as other major renovations, such as increasing the size of the washrooms, increasing the size of the northbound parking lot, expanding the septic system and adding storage space. At the same time additional staff was required and the number of employees grew from 40 to 80. Further to the expansion was the building of a freestanding ice cream operation, as well as the completing of Webers own meat processing facility, with a full-time butcher who produces fresh patties from Grade "A" chucks, daily.
The result of the Bridge project caused an immediate increase in sales of 60%. The following years saw continued growth in sales, success and reputation. The Bridge made Webers an even greater Landmark on Hwy. 11
