Sure is... if your eyes are good enough, you may be able to make out 'Town of Lindsay' on the clock face. I left it in because I figured it was relatively obscure.

I spent many a day in my youth on Kent street, walking by that clock..

Charlatan 02-02-2006 03:30 PM

My brother used to cruise the strip in his black pickup truck. He'd take me along when I'd come to visit.

Lucifer 02-02-2006 03:50 PM

Brock? Wellington?

Charlatan 02-02-2006 04:03 PM

No and no. Brock is on a big pillar in Queenston. This more northerly than that.

Charlatan 02-03-2006 05:37 AM

For the record... I've been to the Big Nickel too... slag heaps are nasty.

Regarding the photo: This guy is responsible for building something that has been posted in this thread.

Colonel By StatueA statue to Lieutenant-Colonel John By stands in the poorly named Majors Hill Park which overlooks the spectacular flight of eight locks in Ottawa. The park got its name from Major Daniel Bolton who took over as Superintending Engineer of the canal after Colonel By was recalled to England to answer to (unfounded) charges of mismanagement of construction funding. However the whole affair put a black mark on Colonel By's reputation and it took over a century to start fully restoring Lt-Colonel John By's reputation and recognizing the significant role he played in the development of early Canada, including the founding of our nation's capital, Ottawa (formerly named Bytown).

The statue, created by scultor Emile Brunét, was unveiled on August 14, 1971. The statue was described as "It is a very moving statue. In the quiet of the evening one can almost feel the presence of this man standing, as he must so often have done, just a few steps from his verandah and gazing out across the head of the canal" (P.A. Camp in Royal Engineers Journal).

Also in Majors Hill Park are the foundations of Colonel By's house, which was destroyed by fire in 1848. Archaeological work on the site was done in the 1980s and the site has recently been made into a full interpretive display.

The first commemoration to Colonel By occurred 100 years after the opening of the canal with a small foundation stone placed in 1932 on the south side of the Plaza Bridge. In the 1950s a larger monument, incorporating a fountain made up with parts of two original fountains placed in Trafalgar Square, London, shortly after the building of the canal, was erected. It had to be moved due to construction in the 1970s and was relocated to Confederation Park.

And I should have left here 5 minutes ago, so someone else post a new picutre please.

Charlatan 02-03-2006 08:33 AM

Excellent Bossnass... by your request, here is another photo!

Looking for the name of the city and the name of the structure in the foreground.

Charlatan 02-03-2006 11:19 AM

Well that's a little specific, no?

Green Gables, PEI?

fresnelly 02-03-2006 11:25 AM

A masonic lodge somewhere?

Charlatan 02-03-2006 11:45 AM

Lucifer's House on the Rock?

(good eye on the masonic symbols, Mr. Langdon)

Lucifer 02-03-2006 02:57 PM

It's a very famous broken window in a church. As you can see there is a silouhette of a man's head in the shards of glass remaining.

fresnelly 02-03-2006 03:00 PM

I'll keep looking. In the mean time, I was googling masonic lodges in Newfoundland and came across this page for the Twillingham chapter.

Their webpage showing portraits of the Grand Masters has the oddest choice of music playing the background. Click if you dare. :D

http://www.newcomm.net/masonic/pmasters.htm

Lucifer 02-03-2006 03:05 PM

that's goddamn funny!

btw: not in Newfoundland

Bossnass 02-03-2006 03:30 PM

St. Paul's Anglican Church, Halifax. By the explosion.

Charlatan 02-03-2006 03:34 PM

I didn't even see the broken glass... That's just eerie.

Bossnass 02-03-2006 03:39 PM

Keeping with the church theme, I think this one may be a gimmie.

http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e2...IM0649edit.jpg

Ack. Sorry about the size. That is 25% size of the original image.

Lucifer 02-04-2006 07:11 AM

this is a gimmie? maybe if you're the Pope!

Bossnass 02-04-2006 07:56 AM

It has been guessed already in this thread, although not featured in this thread.

And since I expect to be away from a computer for the next 24 hoursish:
Use self control!

Hints Spoiler: East Coast

Spoiler: Nova Scotia

Spoiler: Acadia

Spoiler: Cabot Trail

Where was I, in Canada....Spoiler: Looking at St-Peters/Saint-Pierre's in Cheticamp, Nova Scotia on the Cabot Trail of Cape Breton

Lucifer 02-04-2006 08:25 AM

I thought that was it, cause it was me that made the original guess. this is the church in Cheticamp, NS. I actually took a shower in the church basement in the summer of '97.

Lucifer 02-04-2006 10:33 AM

mmmm, maybe I should post something, here's an easy one:

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c3...0071Medium.jpg

Leto 02-05-2006 07:04 PM

trans-canada hwy mile marker? mile 1?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 04:15 AM

mmmmm, no.
BTW, there is no activity on this thread on the weekends! WTF?? are we pasty computer nerds or not?

fresnelly 02-06-2006 06:18 AM

I'm a pasty computer nerd, but I'm stumped. Given the elements of the inset sculpture, my best guess is that it's a monument to St. George blessing those kids from Mary Poppins.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 06:29 AM

The lions and unicorns and the cross in the centre are a stylization of the Newfoundland and Labrador Coat of Arms.

http://www3.sympatico.ca/goweezer/ca...cs/coanfld.gif

Is this the entrance to Memorial University?

I was on this thread many times over the weekend, but had no idea where that picture was. I finally threw a guess in as a bump... thinking that it had something to do with the Rock...

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:11 AM

Charlatan is on the right track with the coat of arms, but on the wrong track with the Memorial University.

what are the two figures doing? What is the significance?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:12 AM

We should have a "warmer, warmerer, hotter, boiling" kind of rating thing going on here.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 07:26 AM

It's hard to make out just what they are doing... looks like they have crossed swords or are sharing a pair of scissors.

Lucifer 02-06-2006 07:47 AM

Crossed swords.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 08:16 AM

Does this have to do with John Cabot?

The entrance to Cabot tower?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 08:31 AM

It's in that area, but not to do with Cabot Tower. Remember the title of my photography post. Head in that general direction.

Leto 02-06-2006 01:44 PM

not knowing your photography post, i'll take a stab at: the entrance to St John's ?

Lucifer 02-06-2006 01:53 PM

no, it's not. Well, not exactly. More like "guarding" the entrance to St. John's.

Charlatan 02-06-2006 01:59 PM

Is this at the entrance to Signal Hill?
