This answer is closer than the zoo, but not it.

Isn't that the Official Diefenbaker Memorial Cold War Bomb Shelter? The Diefenbunker?

The roof of CBC headquarters at Wellington and John?

Charlatan 02-01-2006 04:58 PM

No. Interesting guess. Not really close.

Leto 02-01-2006 08:08 PM

That Muttart Conservatory looks really interesting. I would love to go there. Speaking of plant collections and the Toronto Zoo, On the many tours that I have taken there, they always point out that their indignous (to the various ecological zones) plant collection is by far more valuable than their animal collection.

I agree, it does look cool. I haven't taken a tour of the zoo since they closed the train, usually we just wander. I knew they had the plants I didn't know their value. Neat.

Lucifer 02-02-2006 05:05 AM

thats not the Sleeman Brewing Company, is it?

Charlatan 02-02-2006 05:19 AM

No. Wrong province, wrong business.

Charlatan 02-02-2006 06:28 AM

The Grateful Dead Live Recording Archives?

OK, that's in the States, but it's run by a Canadian

Is this some sort of film archive?

EDIT: Found it. It's the National Archives Preservation Centre in Gatineau PQ.

You are correct.

A couple of my friends who were in Film Studies landed jobs there as film archivists. Another friend was (and I think still is) a programmer for the film archives screenings.

At one point I gave serious thought to following their example... instead I followed my girlfriend (now wife) back to Toronto.

very cool. Is this all film? is there a move to convert to digital and perhaps make it available to the public via web access?

fresnelly 02-02-2006 09:11 AM

We're richer for it.:)

You should be able to guess the city in this photo pretty easily, but I'd like either the name of the (awesome) event, or the name of the venue.

The Winnipeg Folk Festival at Bird's Hill Park

Some of that is film, some video tape... I understand that there is a move to digitize everything. I don't know what the timetable is on that though.

Leto 02-02-2006 09:24 AM

awesome.

I have to say, this thread is educational, AND fun!

*it's very neat to see how cities such as Winnipeg, Calgary have changed since I last drove through them circa 1984...

fresnelly 02-02-2006 10:01 AM

Right kind of event - wrong town. Look closer.

skier 02-02-2006 10:33 AM

I'm pretty sure that's the Edmonton Folk Music Festival.

Martian 02-02-2006 10:35 AM

It's Edmonton. The Muttart Conservatory is visible in the background.

So the Edmonton Folk Festival.

EDIT - Damn. Skier beat me to the punch...

fresnelly 02-02-2006 10:42 AM

That's right Skier. And good eye Martian!

I've been to it twice and it's truly a magical musical experience.

Game on...

skier 02-02-2006 10:44 AM

Alright next up:

Bonus points for where I was standing.

Martian 02-02-2006 10:48 AM

Just a shot in the dark - Whistler, BC?

No idea where you'd be standing though. Them mountains, they all looks the same to me.

skier 02-02-2006 10:51 AM

Nice try, but that's not it. It is a ski resort though.

fresnelly 02-02-2006 11:12 AM

Hmm. Sunshine on Goats Eye?

I was looking at the stage rather than the skyline... Doh! That looks like the same stage in Winnipeg (probably is).

Check on sunshine. Game on.

Was taken from continental divide.

Sorry for the delay...

Martian 02-02-2006 02:58 PM

Wow, it's one I know! That's the giant nickel in Sudbury.

Charlatan 02-02-2006 03:01 PM

I can't imagine there are too many Canadians who couldn't get that one... but how many have actually been there?

Martian 02-02-2006 03:06 PM

I have family in Sudbury. I've seen that damn thing in person.. for some reason I didn't think it was all too impressive.

I've rarely been out of Ontario, but I've seen a lot of the towns that are here. Eventually something was going to click.

Martian 02-02-2006 03:21 PM

Next up...

Charlatan 02-02-2006 03:26 PM

That's in Lindsay, Ontario... I am there frequently enough.
