No. This is not in Toronto.

Not in Brampton.

I believe this thread has shown a place that is just across the road from this church.

Sticky 05-26-2006 09:09 AM

Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica Ottawa.

Charlatan 05-26-2006 09:13 AM

Game on Sticky!

(for the record... the Peacekeepers Memorial is directly across the road from this church).

Sticky 05-26-2006 09:22 AM

Nope. I think it was torn down before my one and only trip to the CNE. I recalled the statue.

I also had a (black sheep great-half) uncle that was a mason/shriner and saw a picture of him at the dedication in the 60s when my dad and I cleaned out his house a few years ago. He had no immediate family and left 600k+ to the Shriners Hospital.

edit- and now google tells me that that was a relocation and second dedication, the orginal was in the 30s. I guess I didn't recall what was on the plaque.

They are very close to one another, at roughly the same height.

Nope, these bridges are in a western province.

the Crowsnest Pass route between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod?

Bossnass 05-28-2006 08:46 AM

The bridges are in Alberta, but not between Lethbridge and Fort Macleod.

They are two seperate bridges, of two seperate ages and purposes, running somewhat closely and parallel.

Sticky 05-30-2006 06:56 AM

I found one of the bridges, now I just have to figure out where it is.

Sticky 05-30-2006 08:11 AM

Hondo, Alberta

Bossnass 05-30-2006 01:55 PM

Sorry. Perhaps one of the bridges looks like one in Hondo. I've heard of Hondo, but other then 'north somewhere towards Lesser Slave', I don't know where Hondo is. The two bridges I'm looking for are not in Hondo.

I thought the logo on my last post was a giveaway.

Sticky 05-31-2006 05:48 AM

This is all I got. It will have to be a help for someone else.
The bridges are near Jasper kind of on the way back to Edmonton.

Here are some other pics:

I'd say those are the bridges...

Sticky 05-31-2006 06:50 AM

ya, but I can't get any more specific on the location.
Maybe this is as specific as Bossnass is looking for or maybe not. If not maybe someone else can figure something out with that logo.

fresnelly 05-31-2006 07:25 AM

The symbol is for the Yellowhead Highway, which runs from Manitoba to BC. I've driven most of it, but I can't place those bridges. Wikipedia has a fine entry for it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yellowhead_Highway

Charlatan 05-31-2006 07:41 AM

It is the Pembina River Viaduct and The Yellowhead Highway Bridge... which is near Entwhistle, Alberta.

Sticky 05-31-2006 08:26 AM

Charlatan continues to impress.

Yep. I was sure Sticky was going to get it. The bridges are technically outside of town limits, but they are called the "Entwistle Twin Bridges".

Cool background, to me,
Via Wikipedia, which saves me from typing it out..

The Grand Trunk Pacific railway bridge whose construction caused Entwistle to spring up is still in operation today. It is a vital part of the Canadian National Railway main line, connecting Canada to the Pacific Ocean. An average of 20 trains travel across it per day. The trestle itself is 910 feet long and 214 feet high. It was the first steel railway trestle built in Western Canada. It is currently the second-highest railway trestle in Western Canada.

Construction on the bridge began in 1908. As there were no cranes big enough to carry steel back then, a massive false bridge and scaffolding was built out of wood. The steel bridge itself was completely pre-fabricated in Scotland. The Scottish engineers assembled the bridge in Scotland, ran their tests on it, and then carefully dismantled it. The bridge was shipped piece-by-piece across the Atlantic, and brought out to Entwistle on the railway. The pieces began arriving in 1909, and the steel bridge was slowly assembled. The engineers’ measurements were so accurate, that no modifications were needed on site. [2]

As the steel structure was laid in place, the wooden scaffolding and false bridge were gradually dismantled. Construction was completed in 1910. As it nears the end of its first century of use, it has required no major repairs; only routine maintenance.
.....

The Yellowhead Highway Bridge

Equally impressive is the Yellowhead Highway Bridge, running parallel to the Pembina River Viaduct.
...
The bridge is 207 feet high and approximately 900 feet long. It cost $1.7 million. When construction was finished in 1962, it was the highest highway bridge in Alberta.

I have a local history book that has a section on how much of a challange the viaduct was; for lack of steel production (due to demands in Chicago and New York), for lack of precision (Not enough engineers on the frontier), and for lack of methods/cranes. The scaffolding alone was a major project.

Charlatan 05-31-2006 12:57 PM

I wouldn't have gotten it if it wasn't for Sticky and Fresnelly (by the way, welcome back Fresnelly!).

I wonder if it is a remnant of the old Riverdale Zoo.

Charlatan 06-01-2006 04:43 AM

Game on Leto!

This can be found on the grounds of what is now the Riverdale Farm. Interestingly, most descriptions of the Farm mention other buildings and structures that are left over from when it was known as the Riverdale Zoo (most of it was torn down when the Zoo moved to Scarborough) but they do not mention this odd little gem.

Correct you are flyman! Down on Eastern Ave, just west of Logan Ave.

Leto, I had the same idea to use this for the thread, but nerves kept me from taking a photo. You're a brave man!

Apparently, those "planters" out front are actully heavily reinforced barricades that can prevent a SWAT team tank from busting in.

haha, I was thinking the same thing. But I used my nifty new phone (not as good as Charlatan's mind you - I got one of those sony-ericsons with the walkman in it) and I thought that I would hold it up to the car window as I drove by.

Riverdale Farm History of Riverdale Farm

You know Charlatan, I remember going to the old zoo as a kid. Some of the things that stick out in my memory are the smell and noise of the monkey house, and the polar bear pen. The polar bear would be walking around its enclosure, doing a circuit forwards then backwards. It would then pause under a pipe which was sticking out of the wall, dripping water, and have a drink. My dad said that it had gone crazy from being stuck in the small pen.

The new zoo was such a departure form the victorian era facility, but I think it is a shame that thebuildings weren't preserved on the Riverdale site.

That is just off the DVP... in Toronto.

They look like big molars or ponderous, headless elephants... but they are living sculpture.

They actively filter water pumped in from the Don River. They were paid for by the company that makes the plastic out of which they are made.

Leto 06-08-2006 12:01 PM

Game on Charlatan. Yes we always call them the teeth of the DVP... and they do filter water. I think I got a link somewhere.

some text: Believe it or not, these sculptures are actually a water purification device. They pass water through ground-up plastic bottles (among other things) to catch the impurities in water before returning it to the Don River. About a half dozen of these stand on either side of the Don Valley Parkway, which you can see running just behind these figures.

Scorps 06-08-2006 01:28 PM

Wierd never seen them, they new? Havn't been in that part of town for like 4 years now!
