I'll give a hint...

It's a Hindu Temple.

Lucifer 01-18-2006 07:20 AM

Is it the one on Brock Road, between the 401 and the 407?

Charlatan 01-18-2006 07:26 AM

Nope... Wrong end of town.

Leto 01-18-2006 09:49 AM

would this by any chance be.. ohhhh let's see:

Hindu Mississauga JayaDhurka Thavsthaman??

at approx Dixie & Derry?

Charlatan 01-18-2006 09:56 AM

No. This is within the Toronto city limits.

Charlatan 01-18-2006 11:52 AM

Wow... this is really stumping people.

One more clue... it is in the North West end of Toronto. Additionally, I don't see it on the Google Satellite map... Those images are from at least 2002. This building is newer than that.

Lucifer 01-18-2006 11:57 AM

Ya got me, brother, I've been googling like crazy and coming up emptier than Lord Ganesh at a premiere of Madagascar!

fresnelly 01-18-2006 12:12 PM

I'm driving up to Orangeville tomorrow. Will I pass it by?

Charlatan 01-18-2006 12:19 PM

What route are you taking?

Leto 01-18-2006 12:21 PM

yes, I've been googling too. It's amazing how many Hindu temples are in Toronto. some of them have pretty decent (rockin) flash intros with music (much to the enjoyment of my office-mates). None of the sites actually have pics of the buildings tho.

You've stumped us.

(off to look for a Hindu colleague...)

fresnelly 01-18-2006 12:27 PM

427N -> 401w -> 410N -> 10N -> Orangeville

Charlatan 01-18-2006 12:42 PM

Nope. You'd come close but you would miss it.

(I will give you a few more minutes and then I will submit another photo).

Charlatan 01-18-2006 01:05 PM

OK. That was harder than I thought it would be.

It was a picture of the Shree BAPS Swaminarayan Hindu Temple. It's is located at 61 Claireville Drive, Toronto (Finch and 427).

Quote:

Opened in July 2004, the BAPS Shree Swaminarayan Mandir is a traditional Hindu Mandir (Temple) located on a scenic 18-acre site near Highway 427 North and Finch Avenue West. Intricately hand-carved in Burmese teak, the Mandir reflects the traditional wooden courtyard (Haveli) craftsmanship of India. The Mandir’s beautiful architecture features a richly hand-carved wooden courtyard that opens into a magnificent foyer with soaring wooden columns and panels. Hundreds of dancing peacocks, delicate lotus flowers and royal elephants beckon in greeting. The building serves as a place of worship for the Hindu community and a place of inspiration for all visitors. The word Haveli refers to an Indian mansion built in a particular architectural style. Haveli style architecture was a popular in India during the 17th century, featuring a low, multi-storied building with a central open courtyard decorated both inside and out with intricate woodwork. Inspired by His Divine Holiness Pramukh Swami Maharaj, the Toronto Mandir is an architectural masterpiece with breathtaking intricacy not previously seen in Canada. The Mandir has attracted many well known visitors including Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty, Toronto Mayor David Miller, Chief Justice Hon. Roy McMurtry, Mr. John Tory, Leader of the Ontario PC Party, and Police Chief of Toronto, Bill Blair. The breathtaking architecture of the Mandir has been recently featured in the Toronto Star and in Canadian Interiors Magazine.

Here's a new photo.
