as you guys might know, there was a melee at cronulla beach last week with some middle eastern youths laying into some surf life savers.

being a mid easterner myself, i was quite upset that these thugs would rough up surf life savers. especially since i was contemplating becoming one back in my youth.

what i dont dont understand though is the anger that this melee has caused. ihave heard of a few scuffles with 'lebs vs aussies' down at cronulla through the years, but i havent seen things get so out of hand as it has this week.

i woke up at 6am on monday morning to hear alan jones revving people up about it. i'd be surprised if anyone other than a 'pro-alan jones' listener would have boteherd to call... personally i think he lent a hand in geeing people up about it.. whether its the right thing or not is another question.

i also recieved that sms that has been going round. seems like its not just the 'lebs' that are the problem. now its lebs/wogs... which basically means that 80% of cronulla beach goers will either get bached or not go this sunday.

the sms was quite disturbing, but its not the anger or tone of the sms tha got to me..it got me thinking.. where is this anger all coming from? it must have been brewing for a while. the sms spoke about solidarity and taking back the 'shire' from the lebs/wogs.... i just dont understand the source of anger

i do however, understand the crap that the 'aussies' have been put through when dealing with 'lebs'. being a 'leb' myself, i despise myself everytime my nationality comes up. but i do understand the shit that aussies go through, and sometimes i think the lebs deserve it...really!

i just think that this whole thing has been blown out of proportion really.. basically some shock jocks thought they'd rev up some bored , semi educated unemployed people and see where it goes...

hope no one gets hurt this sunday...

Some people have yet to accept other cultures, and beating on the surf life savers, that was most likely what started it all. The life savers is a big part of a boy/girls life at some stage, whether they goto nippers or have friends that goto them, the life savers have earned alot of respect and seeing/hearing about them being beaten up will rev up a few, even a few that wouldn't normal do that sort of things. Why the 'wogs' got pulled into it, would be the racists just seeking to throw something else against nationalities.

Sorry to hear all this crap is going down in your area O_o Hope things get better and that you don't get hurt by any of these racist trouble makers

First - people like Alan Jones/John Laws are nothing but bigoted idiots - unfortunately they have a huge audience that agrees with them. My understanding is that 95% of the time they will say something controversial to get listeners. They rarely have practical solutions - anytime they say "we should do X", it is more than likely an impractical idea that sounds good. I would not give them the time of day.

Second - the amount of racial vilification that seems to be flying around (in the last 5-10 years) is very scary. I blame our government who have spent so long on the illegal immigrants/war in iraq/terrorist bandwagon that I am not surprised when racial tensions arise. Quite frankly, the scaremongering that the current governments go on with is shocking.

When anybody is the target for unprovoked attacks, then the perpetrators really need to feel the full weight of justice.

This whole cronulla situation just goes to show that your ethnicity does not determine whether you are a fuck-wit.

I can see where sometimes the aussies feel dominated in their own territory. It seems that often, even the police are hesitant to intervene or take action when it comes to dealing with situations that involve issues that contain a racial aspect.

I think that is the underlying issue here. I don't think it's justified or right, but I can understand it in that context.
