Google on "failure" returns Bush Bio on feeling lucky

The folks at google are apparently at it again.

The top response on "failure" is a Bush Bio
http://www.whitehouse.gov/president/gwbbio.html

George W. Bush is the 43rd President of the United States. He was sworn into office on January 20, 2001, re-elected on November 2, 2004, and sworn in for a second term on January 20, 2005. Prior ...

I presume everyone remembers the Howrad Dean announcement during the runup to the elections that google was returning Bush Bio on "miserable failure."

Simplicity is always better.

hehe nice find.

Gotta love subliminable messaging

djtestudo 09-12-2005 03:01 AM

This wasn't that funny three years ago.

Petsho, please learn from your previous post. These forums require an intelligent post on legitimate reasons for a viewpoint and hopefully an intelligent discussion will follow. Even though I generally support Bush, there's tons to pick from on reasons not to. Go back, and try again please.

I was pretty much going to PM you with this message Petsho.....please read and understand it.

Even as a non-supporter of the current administration, I fail to see how these "mudballs", that are being flung, add anything to the discourse on the politics board.
In fact...rather than just close the thread, it's going to Tilted Nonsense, where it belongs.

Astrocloud 09-12-2005 05:15 AM

I'm not really sure why your stickin it here.

Is it really a mudball? It sure is controversial and clearly an attack by one view of thinking, but any view/statement can be seen as a mudball or attack. Intelligence, furthermore, is all relative. I don't doubt that this is a blatant attack on the Administration, but I believe the message. Bush has done little or nothing that has led to success and his record low poll numbers show that as a president he is a failure.

I found this ridiculously funny for some reason.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Out of curiosity:
So how do people do these sort of jokes? Do they sponsor a word or phrase with google? (But they normally appear explicitly as 'sponsored results'). Or do they just create lots of fake pages linking to the site with the word 'failure' as the hyperlink text? Or how do they manage it?

10-04-2005 08:03 PM

It all depends on how Google (or whatever search engine you're trying to hack) ranks its pages. The latest methods are reportedly based on the number of links feeding into a page, so you might attempt something like this by having lots of links from hundreds/thousands of blogs, fora and other pages pointing to the page you've created. If you choose an innocuous enough word, it shouldn't be too difficult to achieve this kind of effect even now.

BigBen 10-28-2005 08:46 AM

Just got this in an e-mail. I laughed my ass off.

Then I wondered what would happen if that happened to me. Not so funny.

How does this happen, and why doesn't google fix the problem?

Still funny though

Edit: And I would like the "Atta Boy" award from a Mod or Admin for doing a successful SEARCH for this topic and posting to the relevant thread.

I may be late on the jokes, but remember how far north I am. News travels by dogsled sometimes. (literally)

CSflim 10-28-2005 09:45 AM

Heheheh. It looks like the dubya fans are fighting back! No. 2 on google for failure is michaelmoore.com!

Am I misunderstanding the charter of a forum called "Tilted Nonsense?"

Not at all, but since this started in the Politics forum and was moved here...

Da Munk 10-29-2005 06:38 PM

For those who were asking, this is the result of a practice called google bombing, which you can read more about here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Bomb. Google is aware of this, but doesn't want to alter search results by hand to undo it.
