Weird Animals

inspired by Zephyr66s "Wombat" thread...

post pictures of animals that you think are weird...

i got the Platypus,

a egg-laying mammal with a broad flat tail, webbed feet, a ducks bill and poison spur on the heel of the male...

i also think the Echidna is a weird animal,

another egg-laying mammal with sharp quills all over its body, it can roll up into a ball for defence but i wouldn't recommend using it for soccer training...

what you got for me???

Always thought the seahorse was rather odd. It always amazes me that they've survived as a species. They're not all that mobile and seem to swim rather awkwardly. And they're very fragile.

And, of course, there's the ever-elusive Otter Pope:

Sea horse? That's nothing weird compared to the sea dragon...

I saw one for the first time about two years ago, at the Boston Aquarium. I would have sworn it was fake if I hadn't seen it myself.

i was so NOT expecting that! (You'd think i'd remember what forum this is by now... haha!)
i totally & honestly let out a really loud chuckle!!! Fly's gonna love this shit.

------------
OK. The rules of this thread don't state that the weird animals must be exotic, so i am going to submit the lowly common Opossum to this parade of weird animals. (Still laughing at Char's entry btw).

A few night s ago, this fella was on the utility wires that run across our backyard.
He looked like a large cat sized ugly rat. And weirder yet, he just sat there! motionless for at least hour, maybe longer... i went to bed. He was gone by morning.

i guess i can be glad though it wasn't Charlatan's weird animal on the wires in my backyard, cuz i probably would've soil my pajama pants!

The guinea pig is a weaird ass creature. You don't really realize it when you see them in the store, but once you realize that somewhere in south america there a herds of cat size furry rodents running around squeeking up a storm it starts to sink in.

Well, the largest of my 3 is about the size of a small cat, but admitedly it is the largest I've ever seen. That pic is actually a pretty decent depiction of what they look like in the wild at least as far as the kind of fur that is shown. Are you thinking of chinchillas perhaps?
edit-this is according to a book I have on guinea pigs, it seems several sources on the internet disagree about the origin of the guinea pig, but I have more trust in a book than the internet.

Nobody can top the infamous Vampyroteuthis Infernalis.

For defense, jagged arms fold back like a skirt.

Truly an amazing creature.
Quote:
The vampire squid looks more like something that swam out of a late-night science fiction movie. The squid has large fins at the to of its body that resemble large ears. It is very gelatinous in form, resembling a jellyfish more than the common squid. The vampire squid has the largest eyes of any animal. It is a small animal, growing to a length of about six inches, bit it has globular eyeballs as large as the eyes of a large dog. The vampire squid's body is covered with light-producing organs called photophores. This gives the squid the unique ability to "turn itself on or off" at will. When the photophores are off, the squid is completely invisible in the dark waters where it lives. These squid live as deep as 3000 feet. Unlike other squid and octopi, the vampire squid has no ink sack. The vampire squid's arms are covered with sharp tooth-like spikes. This gives the animal its name. One pair of arms has been modified into retractile filaments that can extend to twice the body length of the animal. The squid may use these arms to capture its prey. When threatened, the squid can draw its arms up over itself and form a defensive web that covers its body. The vampire squid can swim extremely fast for a gelatinous animal. It can reach a speed of 2 body lengths per second and can accelerate to this speed in only 5 seconds. If danger is present, it can make several quick turns in an attempt to escape its enemies. The vampire squid is found throughout the world in most tropical and temperate regions.
Check out the creepy blue eye..
