All I know is the plane overshot the runway by a fair margin - 200 metres or so. At a guess, they were on fly by wire during landing, got rocked by lightening, and the humans had to take over? Or maybe a microburst?

Beats me, but I have to fly out of Toronto to Newfoundland tommorrow morning. I hope they've got it all sorted out by then...

I heard this morning that just prior to landing all the lights went out inside the plane. They (the passengers) all cheered when the plane touched down because they were worried. *go figure*
They are saying that the pilot was on a "red alert" NOT to land due to the rain and thunderstorm conditions....that he circled for "x" amount of time and then decided to land. It will all come out soon enough if it was pilot error or not. The only thing that really matters is that every single passenger made it out okay. Only 40 some people hurt which is bloody amazing when you look at the film footage. It will be interesting to see what happens....if it wasn't pilot error then the staff should be honored for getting everyone out alive and under TWO minutes. (90 seconds if the reports are correct)

What is so disturbing about hearing that the lights went out... is that they lost electrical systems, which would make me thing- -what's running the computer system that's flying the plane... I'd imagine with no electrical system or computer system it'd be like flying a really big toaster... The question I'd ask is why'd the power go out? Was it hit by lightening? Airbus has an excellent safety record, but I'd be curious to know if this is possible for it to happen again.

My friend had a first hand look at this accident. Apparently she was driving on the 401 when the plane overshot the runway. She stopped to see what the hell was going on and then heard some explosions and saw fire. I was supposed to be with her, cause she was coming back from University of Toronto @ missisauga, but I was camping with some other friends that day.
