August Long Weekend - Any plans?

I just realized the August long weekend is this weekend... I thought it was NEXT weekend. Damn.

Trying to pull together some plans at the last minute and it looks like it will be a weekend spent in the city doing the usual... I had really hoped that I could get to the cottage or maybe out for a paddle in our canoe...

I am a little bit bummed.

How about you? What have you planned?

(hopefully it is good so I can live vicariously)

james t kirk 07-28-2005 11:31 AM

Drywalling the living room and kitchen.

Seriously. I am covered in saw dust at this very moment, just taking a little time out. Had the last week off at work and spent it working on the homestead. Lots more to do yet.

Compounding and sanding
Stripping and sanding woodworking
Sanding floors
Tiling kitchen floor.

I can't see the future beyond all the dust.

It's either that or Caribana and well, I figure I would be the guy who ended up getting shot, so why tempt fate.

IC3 07-28-2005 11:37 AM

Yup..I'm moving in about 2 or 3 hours, I know it's only thursday..but my weekend has already started. I booked tonight off of work, So i don't go back till monday night.

Other than moving, I don't have much planned. Just spent 200 dollars on a new sticker for my car, Drivers license renewal and emission test.

75 dollars for Sticker (Bullshit)
75 Dollars for new license (Bullshit)
40 dollars for emission test (Bullshit)

Happy Birthday from Dalton McGuinty!!

My annual Kegger in the back yard. Got a keg of Sleeman Honey Brown waiting for me and my buddies to consume and then I plan to spend most of Sunday curled in a ball wanting to die

kramus 07-28-2005 03:02 PM

My brother is having an open-house family get together in combination with his wifes' 40th birthday celebration this weekend. That will be the highlight of the weekend. Other than that I will be working around the old house getting it ready to sell. Ugh.

For a break I can keep busy at this place - my ma wants weeding done. I won't lack for things to do.

cellophanedeity 07-28-2005 03:08 PM

I'm going to my love's family reunion at his aunt and uncle's cottage.

Last year we had sex in the lake. Could happen again, you never know. (I know it's bad for you, but it's fun! :()

Got an out of town gig Friday then take off to Maine for a wedding on Saturday.

Let's see if Air Canada can keep its streak going for either a) leaving behind schedule b) cancelling the flight c) having stewardesses speak french 90% of the time (excuse me, can I get beverage please?,....Pardone Monsieur d) lose or damage my luggage

In any event, the weekend should be a hoot.

Man you seem to get the worst luck on flights... I fly a lot and *never* have these problems... OK, one time we took off later because of a thunderstorm and one time my flight was cancelled but it was put on the next flight an hour later with no fuss... I can't think of another time I've been grossly inconvenienced or late. Some guys have all the luck I guess... :p

So it's confirmed, I will be staying in the city this weekend. I held out hope that I might sneak out at the last minute but it isn't going to happen.

It now falls on me to pull an inventive miracle out of my ass and save the weekend from drudgery...

prosequence 07-29-2005 05:14 AM

Maybe some camping... beer... golf.... beer .....beer

Yakk 07-29-2005 05:42 AM

Driving to my hometown (Ottawa) with a friend, his girlfriend and his dog.

Visiting old buddies, going to a party, maybe enjoying some of the good old outdoors. Mmm, rocks!

Daoust 07-29-2005 05:50 AM

On PEI, we don't have an August long weekend. We move the holiday a few weeks down in August and we have what's famously known as "Gold Cup and Saucer Day". It's on a Monday, I think in 3 weeks. The Gold Cup and Saucer is the award given in a annual horse race. lol. Reading this it sounds like I'm back in the 1800's.

But anyway, I am doing something this weekend. I start my week of summer holidays this weekend. I'm driving to my family's cottage in Ontario. Like Yakk, I'll be passing through Ottawa, probably about 6 a.m. on Sunday. I'm very much looking forward to visiting my family that I have not seen since Easter wknd.

Camping, golfing, eating moms meals are on my itinerary.

Charlatan 07-29-2005 05:51 AM

Hey Daoust... if you are driving through Ottawa, where is your family cottage?

Lucifer 07-29-2005 09:27 AM

I just got home after being away at work for 4 months!, so I'm freaking tired, and I'm going to unpack my work gear (and put it away, cause I'm taking a year long sabbatical to go back to school), do some laundry, visit the TFP (it's been too long!!), and relax. Tonight I'm going to bbq a steak, drink some cold beer and go to bed early with my wife (haven't seen her for a while!!). Maybe on Sunday I'll feel like playing some golf...

Charlatan 07-29-2005 09:32 AM

Y'know... Golf does sound like a good idea.

Maybe I will try to get some in on Monday...

streak_56 07-29-2005 11:49 AM

I've got nothing planned for this long weekend. It sucks and makes me realize how idiotic I am for not trying to plan something. I might just go ride my step-moms horse.

Very bad for you.

I did that about 20 years ago with my then girlfriend (sigh) at Nickle Beach in Port Colborne. I was 20, the sun, the summer, the water, the girl, the newness of it all (sigh)

Anyway, make a long story short, we had sex IN the lake.

Next weekend we spent at the Emergency ward with her doubled over in pain from some sort of nasty bacteria being introduced into her vagina.

Antibiotics were prescribed, and a lecture from the doctor came with.

Hey, I was 20 for crying out loud.

wdevauld 07-29-2005 01:52 PM

Leaving town in about an hour, to go to the Lake.

Watersports for the weekend. Going to get in some Air-chair time, wakeboarding and kneeboarding. Camping out at the lake, and I'll probably enjoy an adult beverage or two.

Yah, I learned about that a month after the fact. I don't even want to know what it feels like when your ovaries are sick.

If you can blame it on being 20, can I blame it on 17?

You're asking the wrong guy, when I was 17, I was a virgin.

Nothing too dirty here, one of the girls at the Kegger decided it was too hot so she decided that tops should now be optional, which isn't unheard of at our parties, and many people followed suit, but seeing as we were outside bottoms where still manditory.

Daoust 08-08-2005 12:05 PM

I have a story from the long weekend that could have been hot, but I, yes I cooled it down.
I went to my cottage all last week. (Charlatan - it was gorgeous there! We swam in the lake every day. Even golfed at the new course in Killaloe twice! Sorry you missed out)
One night the wife and I decided to go fishing. And where we go fishing it's a long way back in the bush, about an hours drive on an access road by four wheeler. We have an old, very easily tipped cedar strip canoe. We're out in the lake, it's coming on 7:30, and let me stress, we are in the middle of nowhere. And this lake is pitch brown, ugly, dirty, and deep. So the wife, in her first bout of spontenaity ever, stands up in the canoe, pulls down her jeans, throws me a Durex and says "let's do it." I was totally unprepared.
Now, I know what all you guys are thinking... Sweet! I know. I know. But I couldn't do it. First of all. We never would have got in place without tipping. She wanted me to strip off, slide under the middle bar and then she would somehow straddle me and we'd go at it. Well. Here's the thing. I chickened out. I just couldn't do it. I knew we'd tip, and I didn't think it was worth the risk of losing my dads two reels, a tackle box, a digital camera, and then having to try to pull the submerged canoe to shore.
So I pleaded with her. I said come up with three choices, thee different sex scenarios, and I'll pick one of them, but I just don't want to tip this canoe, way back here, and lose all the stuff. She wasn't game. So we decided to pack up, and head home, she being a little miffed that I passed up sex. We got back to the camp where we'd unloaded the four wheeler, which was still about a ten minute drive from the main road. It was dark, it was quiet, we saw a 16 foot aluminum fishing boat on the shore (different lake) and the wife says lets paddle out there and do it in that boat. I said ABSOLUTELY! It wasn't going to tip, there were no valuables in it, I said let's go for it.

We get the boat in the water and it starts to fill up with water. So we were on a timer. But that was okay. We both take our pants off and we start doing it doggy style, my favourite position. So, with the exception of the mosquitos snacking on the blood from my scrotum, I'm in a good place. Then I hear it. The noise. Sounds like cars. We quicken our pace. Then we see the lights from the cars heading towards us. I pull out, we throw on our clothes just in time while the cars drive past us, looking down on us, wondering who the hell is out fishing in the dark. We got back to shore, got in the van, and headed home. I have yet to have received my raincheck since that incident.

So how hot was that? Sorry, it was the best I could do.

You're not the only one...

Charlatan 08-10-2005 06:31 AM

Daoust... glad to hear the weather was so sweet.

The lake where you were fishing, is that Long Lake? The one that you get to via the logging road that that starts off Red Rock road right at the border of the two counties? If so, that is the best fishing anywhere...

My son and I have camped on the little island in the middle (and were hassled by a bear).

Regardless, next time go for the sex in the canoe... just paddle to shore, ditch the stuff and paddle back out...

As the late Pierre Burton once said: "A Canadian is someone who knows how to make love in a canoe."

As for the golfing... the course isn't too bad. I think it is going to mature into a very solid course. The same guys who designed Wolf Ridge also designed the Oaks of Cobden (a very nice course).

Oh Charlatan, it is so cool talking to someone who knows so well my favourite place on the planet!
The Lake you call Long Lake with the island, I was there last Monday. My brothers, my cousin, my brothers gf, and my wife and I drove back there (on what's called the Shed Hill road, named after that treacherous hill at the start of the road that is almost impassable) and camped on that island. We fished in the evening and had a nice big meal. Then we used the leftover food to bait the snapping turtles that swam up to shore. We call that lake Upper Long Lake, and as you might imagine there is a Middle Long Lake and a Lower Long Lake too. Where the whole sexscapade event happend was Middle Long which was a long trek. Next time we'll remember to take the stuff out of the boat.

Wolfe Ridge was a nice course, but you NEED to rent a cart to fully enjoy it. The walk between the holes is effing ridiculous. I know because we walked the course the first time I went on Tuesday afternoon, in that awful heat. I absolutely HATE that ninth hole. For some reason it kills me every time. I shot an 8 and a 10 there!!!

I haven't played Cobden yet, but I did play Dragonfly a few times. I like that course too.

Wow. Very cool.

Leto 08-10-2005 07:56 AM

nice story daoust, youhave my interest piqued about the method. I like the lying onthe bottom of the canoe, under the bar, and her straddling you. It's almost worth a digital camera!

I spent the holiday in Fundy Trails park, where there was a very nice New Brunswick day party put on by the staff. Free cake and drinks, plus a beanie baby toy for the youngest of my kids.

After all this heat in Toronto it was sure refreshing to spend some 24 degree temps in Saint John and Charlottetown!

Charlatan 08-10-2005 08:54 AM

That is the exact place Daoust! I haven't been up Shed Hill Road since I sold my Jeep a few years back. The only way for me to go now is to go with my wife's uncle or cousins and our vacation times don't always coincide. The bass up there are just... well, awesome. It was the only time I ever caught two fish on one lure twice in one day...

Good to hear you didn't have any bears bothering you on the island. My son and I had to beat a hasty retreat to the canoe when we camped there. A bear swam (waded) to the island and was examining our pack up in the tree... Gotta say the view of the stars from the middle of the lake was awesome.

I agree with the walk at Wolf Ridge. The walk between holes can be a bit much in the heat. When I play, I've tended to do so alone and early in the morning (I like to be first off so noone is in front of me) so it isn't so bad. I agree about the 9th hole... just can't keep the ball in play. The 5th hold... 184 from the white and 221 from the blue is a killer par three hole.

Dragonfly is good and challenging... a course that isn't in the best condition but is very hard is the Barry's Bay course. It is a very narrow and cut out of the hillside. The greens can be a bit rough but the course is good for a laugh.

You should definately try the Cobden course... the back nine is stellar.
