I haff returned
Well after a month or three hiatus, I've quit my cushy government job, started my electrician's apprenticeship, and moved my family from "beautiful and beachy" Penticton BC to "WTF is that a mosquito or a flying dog?" Yellowknife.
What can we learn from all of this? First off, career changes are good. Never been happier than now, and it's a nice change after wanting to strangle myself with a telephone cord working in an office and wearing a tie. Secondly, good god this place is sickeningly thick with money. One of the electricians that works with me just overhauled his SINGLE WIDE trailer with 120k worth of renovations. Figure that out, I didn't want to ask. Thirdly, I missed everyone here. We still working on getting Janey for PM? Even my wife is lurking here now (still to shy to post, I'm working on her)

Antikarma! Nice to see your name here again, although, correct me if I'm wrong (cause I often am!), but you still posted when you were north of 60 - no? So, when you say "returned" I can only assume that you mean to the area of the country that actually gets sunrise in winter, you don't have to eat cached cariboo, and there are way more issues then "where's the fuckin' pipeline gonna run!?"
Either way, welcome back. As for mosquitoes, deal. Take the geood with the bad, 'cause there's tons of good. So, if I drive to BC, and I stop around those parts, will you buy me a beer? Peace, Pierre

Nope, really long complicated story, but for a long long time, I came here to work, but went down south to where my wife lived, in BC. I was a resident of BC but worked in the NWT. I'm a born and raised northerner and my wife is a born and raised alberta redneck, so was a bit hesitant to come up here for good and all. I quit my job here to make a full out go at work in BC, and found that my degree got me as far as a fast food chain.
But the free univeristy for any child in the NWT, the kickass fishing, and the fact that even if you work at McDonalds you're making more than 14 bucks an hour changed her mind. The pipeline is gonna run through Hay river by the way (I have 25 bucks on it!) and caribou makes for nice burgers. On a related note, for any guy out there thinking of working in an arctic mine; I know you're stoked about the 6 or 7 thousand dollars you'll make in the 3 weeks there, but remember your wife can spend it before you get out

So, um, is that a no for the beer then?
And, as for Alberta, mountain biking, hiking, skiing, even, yes fishing, is friggin' awesome, even if you might have to beat a few rednecks with a wagon wheel once in a while, especially this time of year (Stampede and all, yaaaaa -aren't we a bunch of fucked up aresholes -hooooooo!) Anyway, hope it all gets sorted out, and it's still nice to to see your "return" or whatever. And I think you're right about Hay River. Cheers! Peace, Pierre ps. so, the beer....

Its for kids that attend school here. For every two years of school a child attends in the NWT, the government will pay a year tuition for them at most of the universities in Canada. That includes expenses and housing, plus plane tickets home and back on winter, spring, and summer break.
The only webcam I know of locally is the good ole CBC. Linkedy link goodness But when I get back from a business trip in two weeks, I'll take a bunch of pics and post em up somewhere
