Team Canada named

Brodeur, Smyth lead Canada at worlds

Canada's entry for the upcoming World Hockey Championship will be long on international experience. Of the 22 players named to the team on Monday by general manager Steve Tambellini, 19 have represented Canada at previous international tournaments.

In goal, Martin Brodeur will be backed up by Roberto Luongo, Canada's winning goalie for the world championship in 2003 and 2004. The third goalie will be Marty Turco.

On defence, Canadian World Cup members Scott Hannan, Ed Jovanovski, Wade Redden and Robyn Regehr will be joined by Sheldon Souray, Chris Phillips and Dan Boyle.

Edmonton's Ryan Smyth will be joined at forward by Shane Doan, Kris Draper, Simon Gagne, Dany Heatley, Kirk Maltby, Brendan Morrison, Brenden Morrow, Rick Nash, Joe Thornton, Patrick Marleau and Mike Fisher.

Canada still has to name one additional player prior to its first game of the tournament on Saturday, April 30th versus Latvia in Innsbruck, Austria.

While the team is missing the likes of Mario Lemieux, Joe Sakic, Chris Pronger and Jarome Iginla, five of the players named won gold on last year's Canadian squad at the worlds including last year's MVP Dany Heatley.

"We are very pleased to name this group of Canadian players today, and know that each of them is honoured and want to represent Canada with the passion to go for our third straight gold medal and to give back to our game across the country", said Tambellini.

The Canadian team will hold a training camp in Calgary starting April 13th before playing a pair of exhibition games against the United States in Halifax and Quebec City. However, several of the players named on Monday will likely miss the start of camp. Thornton and Nash have just completed their championship season with HC Davos in Switzerland while Souray is still playing in the Swedish Elite League final. Smyth has been given a few days' off in order to spend time with his wife, who gave birth last week to the couple's second child.

The team will then travel to Europe where they will face Latvia and the Czech Republic in a pair of pre-tournament games.
What do you think? I think it looks like a strong team, even though there are some glaring omissions from people who turned down playing.

I really would have liked to see Iginla, St Louis, Lecavalier on the squad.

The team looks really good until you get to the forwards. While strong, the forwards don't look to have nearly the scoring potential as they did in the World Cup of Hockey eight months ago. Defence and goalies look awesome.

Iggy! Aside from the lack of Iginla, looks like a fine team to me.

I thought the team sucked, personally. I mean, they have a few good players, experienced in World Cup action (read: Brodeur) but they have far far too many Kirk Maltby's up front. Too many of the forwards have been there before and done nothing (read: perennial hopeful Simon Gagne). My only hope is that the rest of the World Cup teams have as hard a time attracting their actually talented players as we did. Then it might be an exciting tourney for Canada.

I didn't even realize the picks were made. How 'bout that? 6 months without hockey and I barely remember the sport existed.

I don't get all fanatical anyways. I don't associate sporting events with national pride. I associate voting in the electoral process national pride which sadly the majority of people don't have time for.

But that's just me. I don't care who wins or loses. Just a bunch of rich men playing a little boys game. See what 6 months without hockey does to people?

I heard a rumour that the training camps here in Calgary are open to the public. Does anyone know anything about that? I'd love to go down and take some pics.

Its not a bad team, I know on the Radio they said that the Czechs have the best team in the Tourney... but I was hoping Iggy would be there but all in all, its not a bad team. ***EXCEPT*** I don't completely agree with Maltby being on the team. I'm a huge Detroit fan, but I hate Maltby. We might need another power forward like Todd Bertuzzi on there. I'm hoping for him, but I know that he'll never get on.

Iggy- Sakic- Lemieux

I'm still living with Olympic gold on my mind. That was a championship line right there.

Well I made it the practice fellas. You can see the photos I took in the photography forum.

The boys look fast, strong and young. I am looking forward to some interesting matchups.

Yeah I can't belive that SLO almost beat Canada, especially since we beat them 8-0 in the first game. I couldn't see the game...stupid work, but by the sounds of it the defense just got soft and the SLO team took advantage of their speed.

Tighten up lads, who's next FIN on Saturday??

It was a good game. Can't take that away from the Czechs, their defense just totally dominated us.

Ahh, well. We'll be back. I think not having Iggy was a big hole for us, hope he makes it to the Olympics.

Damn, I had a feeling we were going to lose, but it still sucks.

It wasn't our best team that could have been there, so I don't mind losing really... Let the rest of the world THINK they're better than us and then when all our players are actually there we can destroy them
