whats the deal with veggiemite?

A friend of mine just got back from studying in Melbourne for 6 months and brought back some veggiemite for me to try. That stuff is really bad. Do most Aussies like it or is it more of a novelty thing? I have a feeling it was invented as a sick joke to play on visiting Americans. He told me it's fermented yeast extract. So is that like scuzz taken off the top of a fresh brewed batch of beer or something?

Really, how many of you enjoy eating it?

ps. My dogs really enjoyed it. they ate all the spread (and the crackers), but they couldn't seem to get enough of it.

slimshaydee 11-26-2004 01:21 AM

you're sposed to put butter on bread first, and then the vegemite, and make sure you dont put too much. I love the stuff!

WillyPete 11-26-2004 02:44 AM

Yeah, it's meant to just shade the toast a light brown colour.
I had some marmite when I studied in the US. It's the English version.

My flatmate asked me what it was and I told him you put it on toast for the best results.
He smeared it on like Peanut Butter.

Even the UK adverts are great and admit it with the tagline "You either love it or hate it". In one, the girls runs into the kitchen during commercial break and has a few bites then rushes back in. You see through the dorrway over the back of the couch and watch her go to kiss her boyfriend, he just splutters and starts with the spitting sounds.

Ella 11-26-2004 03:57 AM

I'm a bit of a fan. I love it spread thick on raisin toast.

Janey 11-26-2004 01:16 PM

ya, i know it as marmite. you can buy it in all the groceries in Toronto. It, however, tastes vile.

We bought a jar to sample, and after a couple of months with no further usage, threw it away.

maleficent 11-26-2004 02:16 PM

I brought back a small jar from Australia - still have it too- it's quite salty - -and well - I suppose it's an acquired taste, one I don't think I'll ever acquire.

Latch 11-26-2004 02:33 PM

I hate it.. I've brought it back to my family in the States before.. they hate it. My uncle ate a teaspoon full by itself.. he's nuts.

The dog wouldn't even eat it.

I had a girlfriend who would go have toast w/ vegemite in the morning then try to kiss me... it's horrible.

spindles 11-27-2004 01:50 PM

My wife and I always buy the biggest jar the sell - love it - got have it thick on toast. I think when you are raised on it, it seems normal.

Janey - marmite and vegemite taste quite different - I don't like the taste of marmite - I think it (from memory) is a little sweeter - what you are used to I suppose.

There are places in the US where you can get it (a couple of online places in the US - think there was already a thread RE where to get Tim Tams...

Neptune 11-29-2004 01:28 AM

I'm another vegemite fan. The thicker the better!

Nocturnal 11-29-2004 02:56 AM

I love vegemite on bread or toasted but as mentioned above the idea is not to spread it on too thick as it can be quite overpowering.

WillyPete 11-29-2004 05:11 AM

In my microbiology class the professor asked who was from Australia when he was passing around samples of what they use to grow cultures. One was a big white tub.

Got to me and I sniffed the tub before I clicked and perked up. Hadn't seen marmite for about a year.

He saw that and asked where I was from. Told him and he asked, for the benefit of the entire class who had all smelt it and were still recovering, what we did with it.
Seeing where he was going I dabbed some on my finger, held it up and with a shit-eater grin said "We put it on toast." and sucked it clean.

Funny, I never did get a date with any of those girls in that class...

Ella 11-29-2004 07:14 PM

Hahaha....nice one, WillyPete.

Jaebin 11-30-2004 12:28 AM

Vegemite is great, so is Milo. I have 8 slices of toast with Vegemite and a cuppa Milo... I like to dunk the toast in the Milo... yeah, I know I'm a freak :D

Ishmal 11-30-2004 12:47 AM

it isn't JUST a joke to play on visiting Americans... sum Aussies really love it, like my brother. he has veggiemite on his toast every morning and takes two veggiemite sandwitches to work every day! i don't mind a bit of veggiemite but im not as big a fan as him.

alpha666 12-01-2004 12:17 AM

BEST SPREAD IN THE WORLD BAR NONE!!! yes i am another fan! have to have my fix every day!

aKula 12-01-2004 02:03 AM

Been in Australia for 12 years now but I don't think I will ever get used to vegemite.

slimshaydee 12-01-2004 10:10 PM

I just had a rippen vegemite sanga just then. I can't see how others dont like it. It's bloody awesome mate.

high_way 12-05-2004 05:32 AM

love vegemite and cheese sangas, or by its self.. pretty much love it.

its also good to put on ulcers in your mouth, clears them right up.

Not surprised, it's mandetory to be weaned on VMite to like it, LOL.

Latch 12-07-2004 09:02 AM

I had a friend who came over to Australia when she was 2.. and she still couldn't stand the stuff. We decided that if you have any chance of liking it you have to have been born in the country.

okay, spindles, i will repectfully reserve judgement until I've had the real thing from the Men down under....

spindles 12-07-2004 05:37 PM

I imagine if you think marmite tastes vile, that you probably shouldn't try vegemite - they are not *that* different.

Lak 12-14-2004 06:15 AM

I love my marmite. I do think that the two taste different, and happen to have a preference for marmite. And by 'preference', I of course mean 'ritualistic devotion'.

Sick things to do with marmite/vegemite:

- Mite n' cheese. Either on sandwiches, or cut your cheese into sticks for dipping.
- Grill the above in the oven for molten cheesy goodness.
- Nukes mouth ulcers like nobodies business. Tried and true (been mentioned)
- Smear a little on your apple. No, honest. Don't lookit me like that! Try it before you knock it.
- Short on toast? Try a steak.
- Spread it thick so it burns like whiskey

Of course if any of those aren't marmitey enough for your sick, sick self, just eat the fuckin stuff on a spoon. Mmmm. Black.

Mass_Hysteria 12-14-2004 06:27 AM

Bah i despise vegemite, it's the feeble younger brother of marmite and does NOT taste the same! Anyway, another way of eating it (marmite of course), is with or without butter on weetbix, a bit dry but definitely good. Bovril is quite a good un also if you're a fan.

Mass_Hysteria 12-14-2004 06:32 AM

The butter and maybe a litre of water nearby is probably a good idea if you're not keen on being mummified by the dehydrating effects of weetbix. Hmm i seem to have only just now acknowledged the existence of the edit button.

Ella 12-14-2004 02:36 PM

My Mum used to smear vegemite on roast potatoes, so they would come out with this kind of oily, vegemity crust. Very yummy.

Meridae'n 12-14-2004 10:39 PM

What's the deal with Vegemite?

We feed it grass, it moo's, then vegemite comes out the other end.

Some things we just wish we could un-invent.

fallsauce 01-04-2005 02:15 AM

I don't get the deal with vegemite (is it actually made of vegetables?) However, I love marmite. The first time I had it, it was disgusting, you get used to it though. Too bad I don't get to eat it too often since we usually don't buy bread.

spindles 01-04-2005 06:06 PM

Both it and marmite are yeast extracts - the difference I think, is the other ingredients. Vegemite is saltier and marmite is sweeter...

Ralli 01-08-2005 06:35 PM

I was born here in Aussie, and I totally HATE Vegemite. I think it is gross. My son eats it, and so does my mum and brother and BF but I dont. it actually makes me sick.....like honestly sick. spewy sick. I dont know how people can eat it. But then again everyone has there own tastes, likes and dislikes and I am sure that some people dont eat what I like. Kiwi Fruit with the skin ON is one. I know many people who dont like the skin. I eat it seperatley too. :p

Pete :) 01-12-2005 02:26 AM

Step one: Grab a slice of bread, apply butter and vegemite, put some cheese on top then place it under the grill for a few minutes until the cheese melts.

Step two: Eat it.

Step three: Repeat step one and two.

Yep, I love the stuff. :D

Latch 01-12-2005 03:15 AM

forgot some steps.

Step 1.5: try not to gag when the first whiff of the vegemite hits your nose.

Step 2.5: try not to spew while eating it. In fact.. for your own good.. you should have just skipped step 2.

:)

I reckon we should make it a prerequisite on this board to like vegemite, so we can weed out all the non true blue fair dinkum aussie blokes/sheilas.

TheRagingBull 01-12-2005 03:21 AM

Love the stuff, like every true aussie should :D

WillyPete 01-12-2005 03:25 AM

I guess it's just like the Dutch affinity for those 'Zout' licourice sweets.
