Ok, Yoda's a badass, he is crazy with a lightsaber, he has force powers that are off the hizook, and he can make you wet your pants from a distance of 100 yards.

Now, Gandalf is a Maia of Manwë and Varda, kinda like a lower level god.

So, lets say that Gandalf has been talking to a girl in a bar, and Yoda starts making eyes...
Seeing this Gandalf is pissed, to say the least, because he seriously thought he was gonna score.
Yoda not being one to back down from an old man,
(think Count Dooku/Saruman) and seriously thinking he can score tonight as well, asks Gandalf to step outside and settle this Maiar to Whill (Yoda's supposed species) So who wins?

Gandalf had all of Yoda's powers and then some. He wasn't the most powerful of the wizards, but he could move heavy crap around w/out touching it (can't think of the word for that right now). He could talk to other animals, so birds would crap on Yoda throughout the battle. Gandalf beat a freakin' Balrog; Yoda would be no problem.

Actually both Gandolf and Yoda are quick. Gandolf is able to swat off an oncoming arrow with his staff from no more than 10-15 yards away. Thats fast. So speed wouldn't be a factor, skill and technique would be. Gandalf would more than likely beat Yoda simply because he has more at his disposal than Yoda does. Yoda has the force and the best light saber weilding skills in the history of the Jedi. Gandolf can also weild a sword and has many magical powers at his disposal. He might be able to heat the handle of Yoda's light saber to a degree that would char his flesh if he continued to grasp it. However it's tough to decide because much of Gandolfs power is held in his Staff. Yoda has the force and if he managed to disarm him of his staff even his magical sword would be easily dealt with by that of the light saber. It'd be one hell of a fight for certain though.

Not really. I seem to remember him getting schooled just before he pulled a desperate getaway attempt that proved successful. He knew Yoda would have his head if they continued. Yoda threw down.....HARD. And Gandolf the White sonned Saruman later anyway.

I agree with a lot of you that yoda would stomp all over Gandalf the Grey. But then the problem of when Gandalf came back as Gandalf the White; this is all far more impressive to me. Now a fight between those two is a different story and i'm thinking that Gandalf (white) would win. Remember that Gandalf came back from the dead and is a lower level god to boot. Yoda dies and just come back as a mere ghost that has to do all his biding through luke.

What a fight it would be

I have got to go with Gandalf. Lower level god, Master Swordsman, master of fire, Defeated a Balrog (also a low level god of fire), came back from the dead. Now, the wizards duel in LOTR the movie is not canonical, so it is an open question as to whether or not Gandalf can withtand or dish out the TK. Also, so far as I can tell from the books, Gandalf's staff is a focus and a place to lean on and a weapon of last resort, not a power in and of iteslf, so arguments that yoda co0uld disarm him of it are moot.

Frankly, assuming that the Magic of the Valar and the Force are more or less equal, then Gandalf's status as Maiar has got to give him more ready access to it that even yoda, jedi grandmaster, has to the force.

The next most likely outcome is a draw.

Finally, I am unsure that, even if you could get them into each other's presence, you could get them to fight each other. They do seem to serve a very similar ethos.

A few things:

YODA=800 yrs old.
GANDALF=3000+ yrs old.

In terms of magic/force speak, age=power. Gandalf has spent a lot more time living and gettin' on, so thusly he would prove to be the wiser and have honed his skills to a finer point.

Also, the point has been made that Gandalf has all of yoda's abilities and then some. Very true. Gandalf is only limited to the spells that he has enchanted into his staff, while yoda is limited to the few force powers granted him.

ALSO... Yoda is a JEDI. he can't use any force powers that are meant to HARM. That means no force lightning, no life drain, etc. etc. All he can use are defensive force powers. He can't even drop huge shit on gandalf because that would send him spiraling down the path to the dark side.

Finally, one must assume that the lightsaber is a high energy weapon, and that the only real physical defense that a jedi has is the clothing he wears. Contrast that to the massive array of energy deflection spells one would assume Gandalf could cast and the various incantations that he could imbue his sword with, I think we have a winner.

Gandalf all the way.

I think there's a point of contention here. Anakin Skywalker was a Jedi, not Vader. When Anakin became Vader, he no longer was a Jedi, and became a Sith.

As for a Jedi not having any harmful type powers, that's also wrong. Taking strictly the movies as canon and trying not to resort to KOTOR, which I think has an ongoing debate about canonical status, you can clearly see in the first ten minutes of Episode 1 that young Obi-wan uses Force Push and knocks the droids on their ass. Now, correct me if I'm wrong but that was Force Push, not Force Let's Kiss and Make Up. Now if someone wants to argue that it's okay because they were droids, keep reading.

I think what matters is two-fold, one part is the action, but the other part is the intention. Slicing off someone's arm in a blind fury = bad. Slicing off someone's arm who's about to blast your young protege = good.

Besides, what Force Powers would Yoda need to overcome Gandalf? And more importantly, sure lightsabers can deflect blaster bolts, but how do they fare against a fireball?

Yoda is cooler but Gandalf would easily win. Gandalf is immortal . . . you never see close to his full powers. Even in the movies he has less power than he has in the books so most peoples impression of him is even more distorted.

Gandalf could destroy Yoda's lightsaber, blind him, fry him, shoot lightning, and slam yoda away before yoda got close enough to touch him. Of course Yoda would likely sense it was coming and never get close in the first place. So in that sense he might be able to set a trap for Gandalf, although he could never kill him.
