Well, I'm not in Canada (New Yorker here ) but I'd move to Calgary! I've visited twice and loved it. Once in the winter and once in the summer so I saw how it can get... Although I didn't spend all that much time in Calgary, I liked what I saw of the city. Loved Banff and Watertown (although that's probably not considered anywhere near Calgary). So yeah, I'd move there.

But I'm thinking Ontario is going to win the "Which Canadian province will Averett move to" contest

Thanks for the reply Averett. Banff is freekin great, I get out there as much as I can. I'd love to visit New York some day. I've never been to Ontario, but I hear a lot of people complaining about the taxes. I'm not sure but I think Alberta has the lowest taxes in canada (we may be second though). But hey, Canada is Canada, and if you're gonna move here I think thats great. Hope to see you around on the great and wonderful TFP!

Alas there is no Muffin Face in BC...

As for moving to Calgary... I suppose I'd consider it but I would rather move to Montreal if I had to choose any other city in Canada other than Toronto.

I really enjoy Calgary every time I visit. The income tax rates and wine prices are almost enough to make me move but I just can't take the winter cold. Snow is like a mother-in-law; Nice to visit when you know you can leave any time.

And a few more trees would be nice...

I'd move to Calgary.. considering I live in Balzac (about a 2 minute drive from the city limits
Winter cold? bah we get Chinooks, doesn't depe freeze for 6 months, only for 2 week intervals

It's funny, most of my friends are all from outside of Calgary (winnipeg, eats coast, etc) And they all love the place, when they go home their friends get sick of hearing them say how great it is.

I think to a certain extent Calgary isn't a city that when you immediatly get here your like wow, it's more of a subtle insidous (spl) thing.
Theres a feeling in the city like things are happening, like it's moving.

I'm originally from Calgary, but I moved to Waterloo for university. In all honesty, I love the city, but at this point I don't miss it too much. Of course with that being said, I really miss the Calgary Flames.

Calgary is an awesome city, but having lived there so long I got bored with it. It was just the same stuff over and over. The red mile was a nice change, but aside from that, I didn't notice much dynamic in it.

Since I 've lived in Calgary, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Vancouver, Barrie, Kingston and Thunder Bay, If I was going tomove out west again, I wouldn't stop at Calgary. Vancouver for me baby!. I need ocean & mountains. None of which I get inToronto, but TO is good for micro-environment: beaches neighbourhood (where i live) the lake, the people, the languages, the music scene, the restaurants. My family is in TO too.

I don;t think i could give up TO for anything other than vancouver now.

What tax? We're so friggin rich that we figure that there's no point in having a PST but on the other hand, our big daddy-o (the feds) figures we should have a GST :P

I live about 30 mins east of Calgary and that's just good nuf for me...to like Calgary...from a distance that is

Never. I'm bred & born in B.C. I have lots of relatives in Calgary and have spent enough time there to know it ain't my bag. Too far from the mountains, too cold in the winter and summer, too "American" like. The town doesn't really seem to have much soul. If I were to move to a city I'd proly go some where like Vancouver. If I had to leave the mountains I'd go to Montreal. Fortunately I don't have to leave my comfortable small mountain town unless I want to.

From what I've seen Winnipeg has the hottest girls in Canada.

I've got a sister who lives in Calgary so I visit there a couple times a year so I can listen to her moan about how bad the weather is there. The dust is also something she goes on about.

Would I move there. No, but it's a nice place to visit. Getting snow in summer doesn't appeal to me and the wind almost made me into a human tumbleweed the last time I was there. I'm also a bit concerned about how zealous the CowTown people are getting. It's like talking to Americans who are Canadian. Canada is the greatest country in the world!!! Calgary is the greatest city in the world!!! Don't you just think this is the greatest place??? Thanks, we all get it. Seriously, we all get it. You're proud of where you live (just like everyone in the world). We get it. Please stop waving the flag at the camera every chance you get.

I'd like to do a documentary about which Canadian girls are the hottest.

As far as I know, this is a forum based on sharing opinions and ideas. If my opinion happens to be that Calgary is the greatest city in the world, who are you to tell me not to talk about it. There are plenty of people who don't want to live here, and that's fine. This topic is about Calgary and why you would move here, or not. So its obvious that us Calgarians are going to plug our city here. I don't know, I don't mean to be offensive, just let us have our fun. Thats what TFP is all about.

I have no idea what everyone is complaining about when it comes to the weather in Calgary. Fuck, I moved here from Saskatchewan about 5 years ago and the weather in Calgary is ten times better than the weather 'back home in the bush." I love the chinooks here, +6 in January? Awesome.

Windy? What? Where? Not Calgary, at least compared to the bald prarie of central Sask.

I moved from Toronto to Calgary just over a year ago, and my only regret is not moving here sooner.

Sure it's a bit smaller, but that's part of the fun. The mountains are nice and close, and people are friendly here...great atmosphere. A nice slower pace of life.

It was in comparision to winnipeg though.
There also amazed at how fast things get done here. (construction)

Personally, I can't see any reason why I wouldn't move to Calgary (I'm gonna go whereever I can get the best job after university).
As for everybody complaining of it being cold, how cold does it get in Calgary? I put up with a lot of -20 days and the odd -30 day. Is it that bad?

The coldest it normally gets is between -40 and -60 with windchill, and that's only for a few days out of the year (your face feels like it's about to fall off on those days though). The cold wind is really the killer. Regular -30 is nothing without some nice icy wind to tear across your exposed skin.

I grew up where lakes are lakes (not 3 ft deep and man made) and mountains are right across the street from your house, with wild life all around (Kitimat, B.C.) but the trend after high school was to either move to Kamloops or Calgary...I chose Calgary.
I lived there for a year and called it quites. I loved it there though, there is always stuff to do no matter the time of night. It's a great city it just wasn't for me...enviromentally that is. I need the mountains, the rivers and forests, lakes and an ocean beside me.
The one promise I made myself though was as great as the city of Calgary is for no PST, private liquor establishments, wicked summers, chinooks and hot girls everywhere...and the French Maid of course lol I would never EVER live there again un less I owned my own vehicle...couldn't stand walking, standing and walking again to work in the winters of -60C with windchill.
But even now I I don't think I could move back there...maybe one day but right now Victoria, B.C. is the place to be, it's just way to nice here all year long.

Calgary rocks!

I currently live in Calgary, have for more than 20 years. You gotta love the slackass winters! Also, proximity to the best skiing in the world, best mountain biking in the Canada, Best hiking in Western Canada. It's all good.

Except for the friggin' Stampede. We spend 50 weeks of the year trying to sound cosmopolitan and professional, then we take two weeks and totally fuck the whole thing up with men wrestling large mammals, drunken bar fights, puke on every sidewalk, a really pathetic plotitician photo ops. The only good thing about the photo ops was that Ralphie got pied during a pancake breakfast, HILARIOUS!

Anyway, even despite the Stampede, which I detest, I still love it here. If I were to move tomorrow, Victoria. but for now, here is where I stay.

I've been considering the move to CowTown for the past 6 months. The thing is my business here in Toronto is a niche market with lots of fly by night operations. With the typical rat race (getting worse) ontop of that I'm just getting tired of the cycle of losing clients and have them come back when that "business entity" moves on to other things. Then they have the nerve to ask me to match their rates. It's business I know but I'm getting tired of it all. I've done some market research in Calgary but so far the findings are still too small for me to make the move and earn a living there.

Sorry to be so late in this thread.

I moved to Calgary from Toronto 15 months ago for three main reasons: 1)the pace of life is more human here; 2)people are friendlier here; and 3)the mountains are close by and they are gorgeous to see on the horizon.

I have loved every day here and I wouldn't move back for all the money in the world. It is a good city for a new start. I am also a big fan of all things cowboy and this city gives me my Western fix, particularly in July during the Calgary Stampede. Those ten days in July are pure heaven for me.

So yeah, this is a great city to move to.

Eh - after spending a week there recently, I now have an opinion on this one. Emphatically, "No."

Ten minutes on the Deerfoot, ten on Memorial and an extra 15 on Crowfoot because I got off on the wrong exit took an extra five years off my life due to stress. I'd go nuts having to regularly drive that. Although, I must say that even though the traffic is insane, the drivers are far more courteous than the ones in my little piddly-ass town. They actually make room for you to merge there, instead of speeding up to prevent you... <sigh> I think I need a limo driver... <grin>

Nah all in all Calgary is big, decent and if it had more beauty, like green grass not yellow, maybe some mountains close by, real lakes no man made crap that's 3 ft. deep at it's deepest, some real wildlife and an ocean beside it I'd move there in a second.
