OMG! Someone who admits to drinking the beer of the homosexual tough guy...

Me and the boys and our 50,
me and the boys and our beer!

It was always cinqant and les export verts for all my Quebecquois amis. I was always a Canadian drinker until I discovered that it was piss compared to everything else that was out there...

Lately I have been either splurging and drinking the fine beverages of Unibrou and Guinness or going cheaper and drinking Red Cap... the beer of my grandparents (according to my Mom)... besides who can resist the stubbies.

MGD is my current fav. Does anyone remember when they tried to make Black Label trendy??? How much of that did I drink in the 80's .....

I KNOW the cost of beer in Ontario in 1978 was $4.40 for a 12 pack, and $8.80 for a 2-4. This was my first year at university, and I had a $5/week allowance, which allowed me a 12 pack, and laundry per week.

after that tho, the cost went up pretty steadily, so that by 20 yrs ago, it would have been way way more expensive than the NY prices!

I'm from New York, but I've experienced Labatt Blue when I was up there skiing (Mont Tremblant). Liked it a lot!
my non-canadian favorite would have to be Corona.

It's going to be a scorcher this weekend. And Father's day. I think that I'm going to treat myself to a 12-pack of Steamwhistle Lager.

Great tasting, refreshing, and the 12's are being distributed with a retro bottle opener too.

Dude, you have Rickard's Red (not sold in USA

!), the tastiest macro-brew I've ever laid eyes upon. Miller High Life is horrible.

Labatt Blue is probably my second favorite canuck beer (but that's available all over the US afaik)

Holy SHIT I didn't notice this on my first pass through the thread. Troeg's is an absolute awesome brewery, and my first venture into the wonderful world of microbrews. I've got to say that the Troeginator Double Bock is my favorite of their's, but they're all tastey. PA is one of the best places in the US for beer, try Victory and Weyerbacher if you enjoy Troeg's. Especially Weyerbacher.

After a long stint of various sleeman's, a quick run through rickards, then a stint of keiths, I've been on a Big Rock run.

Seriously, now that I think of it, I can't remember the last case that wasn't a big rock product. I don't know if it is local marketing, as Big Rock is an Alberta based brewery near Calgary, but I'm hooked. I tried "Kold" a couple times, but it is the worst that Big Rock produces (and I think they might have dropped it recently).

Other Big Rock lineup, which I recommend...

Honey Brown or Jack Rabbit are both great lagers.
Traditional, Grasshopper, and Pale are all nice ales (I like the grasshopper).
I'm torn on the Warthog, a heavier ale, but I have a number of friends that like it. I like the McNallys, which is an irish ale, but don't drink it very ofter. They make a 'black and amber' stout that is supposed to be good too.

(not a Canadian Beer but, I really don't like Heineken either)

The original post mentioned the first beer ordered in a bar when under age. For me that was Brador. I remember thinking how anyone could have sold any alcohol to me at 15. It was obvious that I was not of age. The only thing that I can think of was that they were possibly a bar that was really not likely to get raided.

Sticky! I was going to mention this lovely Stout and lo and behold he you have done it.

I bought a six of St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout on the weekend for my father in law... It was very tasty.

Brador?

Now that's a classy beer. Do they still make Brador? I had a friend in University who would drink nothing but Brador. The simple lable and malty flavour...

ah yes I remember the good old Brador. That was the high test of choice in high school (of course I was legal in Grade 13, when the age of majority was 18). We could congregate at Barrie Burger for Home Burgers and Brador...

the high test option was Labatt's Extra Old Stock comemorative brew... I think it was 6.5%.

My dad favoured Brador as well. I went scuba diving off of the dock at our cottage and spotted what I thought was a collection of loonies (or gold doubloons!) only to find dozens of brador caps with the gold foil wrap!

I have been having a really hard time finding the St. Ambroise Oatmeal Stout. I can't seem to find it anywhere.

As for Brador, I don't know if they still make it. I have not noticed it in stores.

I think that both of the above stems from the same issue. In the Depaneurs there is a real lack of brewer selection. There is alot of choice amongst several brewers but there are not that many brewers represented. The Supermarkets have a much better selection if you can believe that.
The only problem is that I can't find St. Ambroise in the supermarkets and if I do it is not the stout.

By the way, in case you guys did not know, yes you can get beer in supermarkets here - convienience stores as well.

I still see returned bottles of Brador at work so I'd guess that yeah they do but I'm not 100% sure.

Ok, so I decided to call the brewry. I spoke to the operator (receptionist) and asked if there was anybody there who could help me find a location around the city that sold St. Ambroise in general and the Oatmeal Stout specifically. My beer of choice is Pilsner - what can I say, I'm a good (although transplanted) Saskatchewan boy. The Molson brand name, not the style of beer, although... I guess... that's lower case pilsner as well... hmmm...

Really like Red Stripe (stubby bottle for those wondering) and Victoria Bitter (also stubby bottle). Sleeman's Genuine Draft is nice too. Kilkenny.. Wild Rose Wrasberry... Corona... Dos Equis, SOL, Great Western Pilsner... man the list is very long.

I think I'll just say... I'll drink pretty much any beer, so long as it's cold... unless it's an English Lager, then I prefer it to be on the low side of room temperature.

on the subject of pilsners, I heard on the news, that Steamwhistle is so popular that they are running out of the green bottles used for their product.
This beer is actually quite enjoyable for a "light"style. I mean light in the sense that I prefer amber style ales such as Kilkenny, or the darks produced by local micros. as well as IPAs.

I have always steered clear from the flavourless corparate brews (Labatts Blue, Molson Canadian, Corona) even in the hot summer months. But Steamwhistle has gotten me blowing a different tune. I would place it up there with Creemore lagar for fullness of flavour.
