Take a ride on my RC car - **Updated 7/31**

I was bored this evening so I strapped my camera on an RC car and drove it around my backyard and basement.

Right click and Save As if you want to go for a ride.

EDIT: **Updated 7/31** See below.

Hehe. That was actually amusing. I didn't realize they changed direction so quickly... Out of curiousity, what kind of camera?

todd 07-29-2004 08:31 PM

Haha it's a Fujifilm Finepix 3800. Just a regular digital camera (not camcorder), but has a (crappy) video setting.

I took the body off the car it and drilled a hole in it and put a screw in there for the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. Probably not very good to have it bouncing around like that, but it looks worse in the video than it actually is.

roofles 07-29-2004 08:51 PM

Yeah I should think it would look shakier especially since the tripod mount on the bottom essentially gives it a big lever arm to swing/jostle around on. Cool stuff. Always did wonder how that would look.

Fremen 07-29-2004 08:53 PM

Cool concept.

Why the dark, though?

roofles 07-29-2004 08:54 PM

Because its scarier? I think I saw a dead body in the basement clip.

OMG HE WANTS TO BE CAUGHT. HES SENDING US CLUES!!

Fremen 07-29-2004 08:57 PM

bundy 07-29-2004 09:10 PM

this is great.

you could start a series of vids like this by having your RC drive around different places... like the local supermarket, library, or even famous landmarks...

slimshaydee 07-29-2004 09:13 PM

that was awesome
I think bundy's suggestion was a pretty good one, although keep away from girls wearing short skirts or you might have a lawsuit on your hands

todd 07-29-2004 09:31 PM

Haha glad you guys like the idea. I'll do one upstairs tomorrow.

The second one was in my basement, but i'm not sure why it's so dark. There are fluorescent lights around the whole parameter of my basement. I guess my camera doesn't like fluorescent lights. Theres no settings to change on the 'video' setting of my camera either. I looked briefly for a video editing program to improve light/contrast, but found none.

You need to get ya a TMAXX with a .21 slammed in it....

Although, nitros cars/trucks are a bastard to keep running good.

This past week I bought a Tamiya TXT-1 and have been working on getting it running. You got to assemble it yourself and everything. I've ran into several problems though. Not with construction, but things like the MSC that came with it doesn't work well, and the servos I had wern't strong enough to turn the wheels. So I bought 2 new servos (4 wheel steering) and a ESC, but now of course i'm having problems with the ESC. I can't wait to go rock crawling and hill climing with this thing when i'm finished. Thats what it's made for. It's also electric, by the way.

why is the world spinning around.. oh make it stop!!

Cool idea.. you should do like Bundy said and drive it everywhere..

That is great. I saw something similar a while ago. Some guy strapped the camera to his rc car and tormented his dog...funny stuff.

todd 07-31-2004 05:52 PM

I recorded a few more. I put them together into one and added audio. It's half inside my house and half outside.

It was originally 12 megs, but I compressed it down to 4.8. The video still looks ok, but the audio you can tell is compressed. I also did a 1.9 meg one, but that isn't even worth downloading unless you have 56k and really want to see it (video isn't the greatest, and audio is horrible).

Right click and Save As.
http://www.toddfx.com/videos/rcEP1.wmv - High(er) quality 4.8 megs
http://www.toddfx.com/videos/rcEP1low.wmv - Low quality 1.9 megs

-By the way, we're painting a room, which is why all kinds of stuff is out in the hallway.
-Some parts are dark again, not exactly sure why..the house was really bright.
-Haha when I was driving on that wall, I fell off a couple times. I'm lucky it didn't break the camera. It's about a 3-4 foot drop on the other side.
-I'll take it out into the public next time :D Maybe up at Walgreens or something. Any suggestions?

roofles 08-02-2004 12:30 AM

SWEET. that thing makes your house look huge.

So thats what missouri looks like? Ive never seen it before.

How about your workplace for ep2?

unoaman 08-02-2004 07:18 AM

roofles...don't judge Missouri by that clip. The really nice parts of the state have LOTS of paint cans!

Thanks todd, that was fun.

Bill O'Rights 08-02-2004 08:23 AM

Wheeee...that was fun!! Letsdoitagainletsdoitagain. Canwecanwehuh?

jwoody 08-04-2004 05:02 AM

Of all the web-pages out there, none of them can compete with this one.

roofles 08-04-2004 10:11 AM

unoaman, i was most shocked by the color of your grass and trees there. they bear a striking resemblance to those of my native california. in fact, the difference was imperceptible to me. tell me my good man, your skies, are they blue at noon and orange at sunset as well?

this is simply fascinating. to think that you are actually breathing in missouri as i am breathing and typing here! amazing!

what a vast and interesting world we live in!

Booray 08-04-2004 10:48 AM

that was fun! I wanna jump some ramps next time

NoSoup 08-05-2004 10:04 AM

Neat idea Todd...

See, I think I am too destructive to do anything like that... I was rooting for you to jump it off the ledge in your yard, but alas, you simply adjusted it...
