Take a ride on my RC car - **Updated 7/31**

I was bored this evening so I strapped my camera on an RC car and drove it around my backyard and basement.

Right click and Save As if you want to go for a ride.

www.toddfx.com/videos/rcbackyard.WMV - backyard 2.2MB
www.toddfx.com/videos/rcbasement.WMV - basement 2.4MB

Hehe. That was actually amusing. I didn't realize they changed direction so quickly... Out of curiousity, what kind of camera?

Haha it's a Fujifilm Finepix 3800. Just a regular digital camera (not camcorder), but has a (crappy) video setting.

I took the body off the car it and drilled a hole in it and put a screw in there for the tripod mount on the bottom of the camera. Probably not very good to have it bouncing around like that, but it looks worse in the video than it actually is.

Yeah I should think it would look shakier especially since the tripod mount on the bottom essentially gives it a big lever arm to swing/jostle around on. Cool stuff. Always did wonder how that would look.

Cool concept.

Why the dark, though?

this is great.

you could start a series of vids like this by having your RC drive around different places... like the local supermarket, library, or even famous landmarks...

that was awesome
I think bundy's suggestion was a pretty good one, although keep away from girls wearing short skirts or you might have a lawsuit on your hands

Haha glad you guys like the idea. I'll do one upstairs tomorrow.

The second one was in my basement, but i'm not sure why it's so dark. There are fluorescent lights around the whole parameter of my basement. I guess my camera doesn't like fluorescent lights. Theres no settings to change on the 'video' setting of my camera either. I looked briefly for a video editing program to improve light/contrast, but found none.

This past week I bought a Tamiya TXT-1 and have been working on getting it running. You got to assemble it yourself and everything. I've ran into several problems though. Not with construction, but things like the MSC that came with it doesn't work well, and the servos I had wern't strong enough to turn the wheels. So I bought 2 new servos (4 wheel steering) and a ESC, but now of course i'm having problems with the ESC. I can't wait to go rock crawling and hill climing with this thing when i'm finished. Thats what it's made for. It's also electric, by the way.

That is great. I saw something similar a while ago. Some guy strapped the camera to his rc car and tormented his dog...funny stuff.

I recorded a few more. I put them together into one and added audio. It's half inside my house and half outside.

It was originally 12 megs, but I compressed it down to 4.8. The video still looks ok, but the audio you can tell is compressed. I also did a 1.9 meg one, but that isn't even worth downloading unless you have 56k and really want to see it (video isn't the greatest, and audio is horrible).

Right click and Save As.
http://www.toddfx.com/videos/rcEP1.wmv - High(er) quality 4.8 megs
http://www.toddfx.com/videos/rcEP1low.wmv - Low quality 1.9 megs

-By the way, we're painting a room, which is why all kinds of stuff is out in the hallway.
-Some parts are dark again, not exactly sure why..the house was really bright.
-Haha when I was driving on that wall, I fell off a couple times. I'm lucky it didn't break the camera. It's about a 3-4 foot drop on the other side.
-I'll take it out into the public next time Maybe up at Walgreens or something. Any suggestions?

Thanks todd, that was fun.

unoaman, i was most shocked by the color of your grass and trees there. they bear a striking resemblance to those of my native california. in fact, the difference was imperceptible to me. tell me my good man, your skies, are they blue at noon and orange at sunset as well?

this is simply fascinating. to think that you are actually breathing in missouri as i am breathing and typing here! amazing!

what a vast and interesting world we live in!

Neat idea Todd...

See, I think I am too destructive to do anything like that... I was rooting for you to jump it off the ledge in your yard, but alas, you simply adjusted it...
