Yes, Junkhouse, thanks. I always forget the name.
Burton Cummings / Guess Who they had good voices, and could rock. I like No Sugar Tonight. |

Man, all these old names from the past. I like 'em! Haven't thought about Junkhouse for years. Are they still around? Janey, you were asking about 54*40 You were wondering if they've had a recent hit. To be candid, I don't know. l've been listening to the radio less and less over the past few years because I find much of the contemporary music god-awful (not all of it, mind you, but much). So I don't know if they've had a recent hit or not. For their sake, I hope they've had a hit. They deserve it. The band has been around for a long time...twenty years. Note: correct me if I'm wrong, but I understand 54*40 has gone over to their own indie label now after their ten-year contract with Warner expired. A good move, I say. They have a very loyal fan base. I expect they'll do well with this new venture. One more band to add to the list: Doug & the Slugs. (These guys are still active, I think). |

Godspeed You Black Emperor! Silver Mt. Zion (side project of above) Explosions in the Sky Mogwai Do Make Say Think Broken Social Scene Mum (with more of an electronic sound) Rachel's (I like to think of them as the only classical-post-rock group around) |
My favourites would be;
The Weakerthans, The Stills, Neil Young, Tragically Hip, Bob Dylan (he's Canadian right?) Leonard Cohen, Guess Who, Godspeed You! Black Emporer. |
54*40: I had to go to their website, they had an album out last year. (forever flatland i think).
I think that the hit they had a couple of years ago was called Casual Conversations. it was good. I like the lower voices, that's why I liked Junkhouse, and now Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. (I also liked crashtestdummies). I'll have to try out Godspeed You Black Emperor! as everybody seems to mention it. Give me an idea what post punk means. I remember Doug & the Slugs. My sisters and me used to sing chinatown calculation all the time! |
Matthew Good, and Default
|
Simple plan rules
simple plan is one of the great canadian commercial punk group ever!!!!
|
Jeff Healy, Guess Who, Oscar Peterson
|
Wow! I'm impressed at the mentions for Godspeed You Black Emperors. I thought they were truly obscure... ANYWAY, they're not the greatest Canadian band.
The Hip is. Plain and simple. They're the best band. Neil Young is the best songwriter. |
I'm not going to name the best, but a few whom I think deserve mention.
I can't believe Guess Who was almost not mentioned until the END of the first page of this thread. :/ What about Natalie McMaster? She's great with her fiddle and violin :) Kim Mitchell is from my town (my mother actually knew him in high school), but I like his music anyway so he gets my vote too. Neil Young. Hands down one of the greatest lyricists of all time. Laughing Sams Breakdown. Barstool Prophets. Das Hip, of course. :) BNL. Matthew Good. Tea Party. Wide Mouth Mason. 54-40! (Hootie and the Blowfish be DAMNED). Crash Test Dummies! |
Great Big Sea is Great Big Shit. Ziiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing!!
|
Rush! They have some of the best lyrics ever.
|
Would have to go with Neil Young
|

|
I mother earth
Breach of Trust Sloan Three greats and all still going...in some form or other |
I just caught VH1's Listed on Much More Music at lunch time. Sam Roberts made it as Number 20, to the top twenty hottest male rock personalities. Whoo hoo! Of course Elvis was number 1.
|
anyone heard the new simple plan album? It totally rocks my socks. They're definitely getting an extra vote from me here now.

salmonblaster sloan (older stuff) matthew good band |
A dissenting voice, but I think some of the best Canadian music ever hasn't been made by bands, but individual composers - ie: Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) - one of the defining pioneers of the mislabeled "detroit techno" [should be windsor techno, but y'know how those Americans like to hog the glory] (see Hawtin's Label, Plus8 Records]), or, say, Oscar Peterson, Joni Mitchell, or Neil Young.
But if I had to pick a "band" (how mainstream of me), I'ld go with The Hip or DOA, assuming we're using the same criteria as CBC's "Greatest Canadian" contest.. Devin Edit: I'm surprised no one mentioned Jeff Healey.. that blind boy plays a mean guitar. |
Best Canadian Band - The Plaid Tongued Devils.
visit them at http://www.thedevils.com/ and see what I mean. |

Great Big Sea has some cool tunes too, and Sum 41 is cool too. :) |
Our Lady Peace
Old I Mother Earth And Metric is really sucking me in lately... |
3 Inches of Blood

Damn I can't wait, their new single is awesome. Hope they make it to the Okanagan on tour |
I like Rush but I love Neil Young, he is one of my all time favorite bands.
|
Wide Mouth Mason
54-40 The Trews Harlequin Streetheart Big Sugar The Tragically Hip The Watchmen Sloan Sum 41 Jeff Healey |
Steppenwolf isnt really canadian. A German immigrant that came here only cause the US wouldnt let him in, along with a bunch of americans. And Bob Dylan isnt canadian either. My best would be Triumph and Tragically hip.
|
Im going to have to say Alexisonfire and OLP
|
Blue Rodeo is playing in my mind a lot lately......not sure why but it makes me happy.
also glad I wasn't the only one to recognize the joy of a Doug And The Slugs experience. I saw them live several times in small venues and had some of the best times ever. |
I would have to say RUSH also.
|
A long ago favorite of mine, King Apparatus.
|
Oh, the list goes on for me...
Finger Eleven Metric Barenaked Ladies The Tragically Hip Sloan A whole lot more, I'm sure... Ooh, I really liked Alanis back in the day, what with her small, serrated antibiotics. |
RUSH, Blue Rodeo, Spoons, Kim Mitchell, BTO, The Hip, and a new band out of Winnipeg I heard the other day, "The Duhks", kind of a celtic-folk-fusion thing. Give it a listen...
