Cottage, Camp, Summer house?
It's summer and many of us in Ontario willl be heading to the cottage or camp if you are from the northern part of the province...
If you have a cottage, where is it? Tell us a story about it. If you don't do you rent, do you go to a friend's or do you swelter in the city? Growing up we never had a cottage, instead we went camping or went to friend's cottages when invited. My wife's family has some land in the Ottawa Valley. Her family homesteaded the land many years ago, they still have a working farm in the area. In fact, there is a town and a Provinical Park named after her family (Foymount and Foy Provinical Park). A generation or so ago (her grandparents generation) a series of lots on Round Lake were severed from the Farm and given to all the brother's and sisters. The result is that one end of this very big lake is completely undeveloped, and still owned by the family. In the middle of this stretch are three cottages and one empty lot owned and occupied by family. It is a very special place and I am very lucky to be able to go there on a relatively frequent basis. I would go more often if it wasn't so far from Toronto. Roughly 4.5 hours from Toronto (although I've done the trip in 3.5) and only 2 hours from Ottawa... 20 minutes west of Pembroke and very close to Killaloe. Where do you go in the Summer?

My ex's family have a "camp" on Manitoulin Island. They said that if it was further South it would be called a "cottage".
Out here in BC we call them "Cabins". It's easy to tell if someone is from back East cause they call it a cottage...

Far north to a remote saskachewan lake where the fish are plentiful and the cliffs are many. good times to be had when we can spare a few days to get up there.

I have a cottage on the North east area of Lake of Bays. I'm about 10-15 minutes south of Huntsville. The land has been in the family since the 70's but we replaced the actual cottage in the early 90's.

Like has been noted above.... It's called a cabin out west.
Anyway, we have had a cabin 3 hours west of Calgary now for 20 some odd years. It's near a town called Invemere in BC. I love it out there. Spent most of my summers there growing up and was very fortunate to be able to do so. Lots of fun on the lake, and in the mountains on dirt bikes, and hiking etc. The oldies are doing a lot of work to it this summer, turning it into more of a primary residence for themseves. Going to be a totally different look for the cabin, but it will always be the same place for me with a ton of great memories. And I'm actually going to be going out there right after lunch. Can't wait.

The only thing I miss about my first wife is the cottage her family had in Muskoka. Nice and quiet private lake, no motors allowed, 1.5 hours north of Toronto, absolutely gorgeous scenery in fall.
Alas, the second wife did not come with a cottage as part of the package. A couple of times we have rented a place in Muskoka/Gerogian Bay. Not this summer, but probably next we'll do that for a week or so.

No need for it. I cross the road and the river is there or I go behind my house and it is wilderness. And I live in the city.

I've never had my own cottage as a kid but we would often borrow my great uncles for the weekend or something. A few years later I learned that my great uncles son in law was my math teacher/uncle. All the toys I would play with while I was there was my math teachers kids. Small world, eh?

We've got an island in the 1000 islands near Gananoque, which is also close to the St. Lawrence Seaway, which is cool, cause when I pass through the seaway on my ship, sometimes my family comes over in their boat and we can wave to each other!

Does anyone go to their cottage (cabin, etc.) in the winter? Ours isn't winterized so no winter access for me...

I don't own a cottage. So no. I don't even know if I know anyone with a cottage. I probably do.

Mine is just past Haliburton. It takes 3 hrs to get there, and since the 90's they've been shovelling the lake road. It is winterized to the point of insulation and it has electricity. So yes, we have been up for New years day trips before.

Charlatan and I have cottages about 15 minutes drive apart. My family's is on Golden Lake, which is connected to Round Lake. Charlie and I have frequented a number of the same places, which is very cool, because that particular area is not a very well known place.
We call it a cottage. It is sort of winterized. It has a Franklin stove. It has no running water so we just use buckets to flush the can. I'm going there on Christmas Day. Very pumped. Hopefully the ice will be good and we'll get a rink shovelled off. If it isn't usually the rink in Killaloe is up and running. Are you going there this CHristmas, Charlatan? I'll be there from the 26-31st.

Sadly, Daoust, I don't think we will be there this year. The only time I've been there in winter we stayed at the old farm house.
1) I think one of the relatives is living there now 2) My wife will never stay there again because she thinks it's haunted. One of these days we will get our cottage winterized and when we do, I plan on spending the week between Christmas and New Year's there... Have a great time and lift a pint for me in Wilno.

My family has two cottages - one my parents bought for a steal at Wasaga Beach, and the other my grandfather built about 35 years ago near Angus (Base Borden). The one at Wasaga is very civilized, its in a subdivision, has running water, flush toilets, showers, cable tv. etc. My parents and my sisters like that one and go often. I go there maybe once a year and more often use it as a base for when I go to Wasaga with the family.
The other cottage is in the woods on the Notawasaga river with 5 acres of woods around us. There are neighbors who now live up there (was only cottages up untill about 10 years ago and now a bunch have retired up there) but they are far enough away that I can't hear or see them. There's a sauna outside as well which is awesome. In past years I was up there almost every weekend from April - October, but this summer i've only been up a half dozen times. I think we'll spend new years there with some freinds, and then I do a boys weekend in February where we play lots of poker.

OK. I'm jealous. I spent about 5 weekends up that way this year scuba diving. I would camp out at Ivy Lea and look at those islands with drool hanging out of the corner of my mouth. How big is the island and how big is the building you have on it?

It really is. In the summer (and winter) we go from the sauna to sitting around the fire drinking beer. Then when you cool down you go back in for another set of heat and steam. In the winter you can do a swan dive into the snow.

Daval, i used to go winter camping in the Minising Swamp with a high school buddy (we went to Barrie Central Collegiate - in the neighbourhood). That's pretty close to Base Borden. What a great place to have a cottage. Do you ever get to Balm Beach? That's just up the coast from Wasaga, and where the family tends to go beaching.
Lucifer: as a student, I worked in the summer on the cruise ship (Canadian Empress) that went through the 1000 islands up to Quebec City ( I was a cook). The scenery around the Gan is astounding, you are very lucky!

We usually stick to Allenwood beach when we're hanging out for the day.

Ok, well we are not quite in Millionaire's Row like you'd see near Alex bay. Ours is a fair sized island, really just big enough for our family and we've got a 2 bedroom brick-shaped cottage on it. My grandfather built it in the 1950's, so it's not one of those turn of the century monstrous affairs with turrets and such.
