Road Test

I'm taking my full license road test tomorrow and it is freaking me out. From what I hear the examiners are really nit picky and it's hard to pass. So can anyone offer their experiences (I'm in Burnaby, BC) or tips on how to do well on this?

I also have a really specific question: Near schools they have the signs that tell you to slow down to 30km/h for school days. Right now it's summer but a weekday so am I suppose to slow down? Should I assume there's summer school? Ugh. Man am I ever gonna fail...

For your specific question... Yes! Better to be safe than sorry.

Remember to check your blind spots, rear view mirror, whats coming up in front of you. Come to a full stop at all stop signs.

Oh and take your time when you pull in or out of the the test center's parking lot.

Most importantly, relax.
Good luck!

I've still got my N, and i'm not going to take my road test in burnaby... too many asshole drivers, I'm gonna take it back home in Kamloops, where there is virtually no traffic

I'm gonna have to practice for about a week of normal driving that my driving school taught me, mainly because I don't drive like that at all anymore, especially practicing not speeding, scanning intersections, a billion shoulder checks... etc

How did the test go?

Ace, you could try doing a refresher lesson through a driving instructor. He'll be able to point out any bad habits and maybe even give you tips on the route that the testers will take.

I'm thinking about it Chemical

if i ever get around to taking the stupid test

I wouldnt slow down for the school zones, if I recall correctly, I didnt slow down when I got my L during the summer, but that was a few years ago... I consider myself a good driver, however I failed my first 2 road tests to get rid of my N... first reason shifting around corners... my truck could only do about 5 in first so whatever, 2nd time I dont remeber, something equally as retarded... third time, passed, road tester was praising me and went and bragged about me to all the other testers, fucked up eh, then i did a computer test and drove trucks for a year, till I quit due to not liking my boss, anyways, the testers are all fucked in the head, so just do your best and dont worrry about it too much, you can always retest

I was so nervous for my tests as well. I have my full G now, and thank god its a relief. I did mine when I had strepthroat ( I didnt know it at the time). Anyways...
1. find someone who already took the test, and practice with them. Ask them to take you exactly where they had to do their driving, and just practice there a lot.

2. Practice stuff that you have difficulties on. I had problems with parallel parking, so I drove out every night for 2 weeks to practice ( I really sucked), and once I did it on the test, I nailed it.

3. Clean all windows, and all crap in your car so it doesnt distract you and you can visibly see everything.

4. Before the actual test, go out with your friend again, and practice an hour or so just to get it fresh practice. And you have someone for support for before and after the test.:D

5. Back into a parking space, so you dont have to worry bout backing out (and he wont see you back in so you dont have to be a pro at it),

6. park away from other drivers if you can so you wont have to worry bout other people parked crappy beside you.

7. Always check all your blindspots and mirrors. You should check, I believe, every 10 seconds.. Check your book, but I think thats what it is.

8. Know each areas speed limit, never exceed, never go below.

9. Avg time you should spend at a stop sign ~5 sec.

10. Hands at 10 and 2, none lower than 9 and 3.

11. Keep your eye out for Jay walkers. My friend failed cause someone ran past him, and almost got hit. It was rightfully the pedestrians fault, but nonetheless...

Well, thats bout all I remember, thank god I dont have to do that anymore, Id rather pay 50$ every 5 years, than do that again. Good luck on your test, and tell us all about it!

[edit] Is it true that people in BC have to have a huge green N on their cars when theyre driving if theyre new drivers????

Ace_O_Spades 08-03-2004 09:17 PM

its not HUGE... it's probably ~ 4x5 inches?

i never use mine, i dont have one to put up anymore.

man, it pisses me off when i see N's on REALLY nice cars... PISSES ME OFF

mew 08-03-2004 10:11 PM

Id just be emberassed......:o And there are jerks out there that will try to scare you on the road or people who will completely avoid you if they knew you were a noob to the road

Poloboy 08-04-2004 03:59 PM

Nah, it's the L's you have to watch out for. N drivers are usually fine. Having an N in the back does make you more of a target for speed traps though, which really sucks.

And yeah, I see a lot of $40k+ cars with N's and it pisses me off every time.

I have my full class 5. Got rid of the N about three weeks ago. It was nothing, I just skimmed through the book agian and wrote about 4 notes on things I had forgotten.

mingusfingers 08-08-2004 03:43 PM

Though I'm in alberta, I got docked for going too slow. That's not a problem now, though :D

It's 9 and 3 if you have an airbag. 10 and 2 can break you arms/face.

bigbad 09-07-2004 04:07 PM

I hate the stupid N stuff, my license expired recently and I'm not sure whether to just renew the N or actually do the hour long road test and probably fail :\ If I do renew the N I'll have the "One person other than family" rule apply, even though I've been driving 5 years now.

billyeggs 09-09-2004 07:17 PM

What does "L" stand for?

bigbad 09-09-2004 07:18 PM

L is Learner, N is Novice

raoul_duke 09-28-2004 06:21 PM

Remember the drill for right turns. If their picky about anything, it's right turns.

Mirror, signal, shoulder-check

I just got my license a week ago. Yay for me.
