Why you should not be proud

1) There are more poor children who goes to school in the morning hungry than in 1982

2) While 6,500 children in Ontario under the age of 10 live under the poverty line, the Liberal government send 4billion dollars to iraq to aid their humanity cause, fuck this outrages me

3) French language laws are now so anal that you cannot file a tax return in english in Quebec and it is a crime to communicate in written english, pretty soon Quebecois kids will grow up knowing very little english, trying finding a job like that.

4) In the city of Toronto, the policy force criminalize being black

5) the size of government is the biggest in proportion in the world, the waste of health care spending is so out of control, you can pump 50% of GDP in it and they can waste it away...

6) most people in this country takes home 37% or less of their hard-earned money after taxes,

7) People in this country re-elected the liberals because they accept that liars should not be held accountable

why are you proud?

The first one is very sad indeed, we are trying to fix this and the fact that you bring it up is one of the first steps to resolving the issue... awareness.

The second just sounds like a reason not to be proud if you didn't vote.

The last... I am proud becasue I had the right to re-elect the liberals if I so decided.

I am proud that I have the option to choose.
I am proud that I have the option to post my opinion.
I am proud that I have the chance to make a difference.
I am proud to be Canadian!

Because despite most of this, and in some cases because of it, we still have as a nation the highest quality of life in the world. I had no armed guards at the polling station on election day. If I'd chosen I could have cast my vote for a party whose worst offence was financial corruption. I have more freedom than any citizen in the biggest democracy in the world, and I enjoy it in a place with low pollution, low crime, and low poverty.

Really. If this is the best you can do to try to curb today's patriotism, I'm pretty damn proud.

OFKU0 07-01-2004 07:43 PM

Since it is Canada Day, I really shouldn't complain. We live in a country that is the envy of most of the world. We have had people running this country for the last 40 years who by and large were under achievers (lawyers) who fucked us at times and still do every which way to next Wednesday, but still, the country is intact.

Now if you want to get my goat about supposed patriotism and bullshit Canadian pride just bring up any sporting event like winter or summer olympics or especially world cup hockey where all good Canadians are supposed to cheer for a bunch of millionaire hockey players playing a little boys game. Thanks but no thanks. I'll watch reruns of veterans in France who fought for this country to instill pride in me. At least these people were heroes and died for there country. Sporting events to evoke Canadian patriotism? No thanks. I have higher standards than just pure entertainment to make me feel proud.

Re: Why you should not be proud

Why the Hell shouldn't I be proud of my country? There's no reason not to simply because it has some flaws and imperfections. Go to any country in the World and you will see they all have similar, if not different problems they must all deal with.

And for the love of God, if you intend on spewing out a bunch of numbers, forgive me for wanting to see some proof before I get all socially outraged.

Ace_O_Spades 07-01-2004 10:49 PM

Sounds like shit is fucked up out east

Move to BC, Ontario is for suckers

3) You can communicate in English, don't oversimplify it. There have been some restrictions on commercial advertising, that's it.

4) Bullshit. Seriously. Go live in Atlanta or Detroit and tell me how much better it is.

6) Incorrect again. Where are you getting your numbers from? Just making them up?

7) People have different reasons to vote, you can't make a blanket statement like that.

I'm also curious about this one. 4 billion in foreign aid to one country? Why do I get the feeling that's wrong? Can you provide a link please?

I notice you didn't come back to refute the crap you spouted about Toronto's murder rate on the Fantino thread. It's apparent you just make up numbers, say them and hope no one will call you on it.

Ace_O_Spades 07-02-2004 08:06 AM

pwned :p

highthief 07-02-2004 08:31 AM

I prefer the term "Wrecked" but regardless...

(tips hat to Ace)

bender 07-02-2004 11:10 AM

So thats the best that you can come up with in as far as negatives, that we're taxed too much, have poor spending within health care, pockets of racism, give to other countries who are worse off, and have problems within the social safety net ?
If you could let me know what country doesn't have these problems and more, please let me know, as I'll bet that you can't.

Ace_O_Spades 07-02-2004 12:29 PM

I was wondering the same thing... I mean, what country DOESN'T have high taxes, and shady government spending?

matteo101 07-02-2004 01:38 PM

The States...oh wait wait...nvm..sorry..ile stop now...

shannon 07-03-2004 08:02 PM

and i wonder, in addition to all the things mentioned above, about your first point, about the children going to school hungry... there are programs being started at many schools (in pei at least, but i think it is more widespread than that) where kids who don't get fed at home can come in to the school early for a free breakfast. so i would wonder if more are hungry, as there were always people who couldn't afford breakfast for their kids, and as there were no such programs in 1982. and seriously, why would you pick 1982? unless perhaps you have some figures to back you up....

Because our population was significantly smaller in 1982.

Pretty much. the percentage of people livng below the poverty line has remained pretty stable in this country.

Oddly enough the one figure that he can back up he significantly underplays, that of "6500 children living below the poverty line". The actual number is actually higher and hardly a surprise.

CandleInTheDark 07-04-2004 11:20 AM

Pride in something you had no part in is worthless, and dangerous. I don't have pride in my nationality, my race, sex, or whom I'm attracted to. Only an individuals accomplishmnets should give them pride, not what was given to them.

but we DO have a part in making Canada great

the behaviour of all of us on the whole makes Canada what it is... we're not the melting pot, every citizen's identity contributes to what makes Canada the best place to live in the world

So take pride

Okay, one, quote your source.. second there are more children, there are more going to school, and there are wonderful programs all across this country to give kids a breakfast at school if they can't get it at home

I grew up with kids that came from Quebec and french imersion.. The idea that they won't know english is stupid. Find me ten school children in Quebec who don'y speak english from Montreal or Quebec City.

4) In the city of Toronto, the policy force criminalize being black
Laughable.. Why dont you actually go out and see the city instead of listening to bad news during elections. The police force is not racist, the police chief wasnt racist.. The police board is not racist..

Quote:

5) the size of government is the biggest in proportion in the world, the waste of health care spending is so out of control, you can pump 50% of GDP in it and they can waste it away...
Are you complaining about the size of the government or that we have health care?

I don't know who does your taxes.. but really.. have someone else look at them.

Me thinks that you didn't vote Liberal. Me? I voted Liberal because I love this country, and I wasn't prepared for anyone like Harper to tell me it HAD to be reinvented.. I'm hoping you're not as blind a follower as you sound, because right now.. you sound like a sheep

why are you proud?
A thousand reasons, I couldnt list them here because I'd be at my keyboard for weeks.. Mostly Im proud that you can have your ideas, I can have mine, and we can both express them in peace, not fearing for the thought police, the morality squad, or the silence of opression..

What about pride in a choice you made? I make the choice to live in Canada. I do have pride in my race and sex. That does not mean that I think they are better. I am just proud of what I am.

PROUD: Feeling pleasurable satisfaction over an act, possession, quality, or relationship by which one measures one's stature or self-worth: proud of one's child; proud to serve one's country.

Canada's not the best place in the world to live, Vancouver BC was a couple years ago but its down to like number 4 or something now.

Anyways, My name isnt joe, But I am Canadian.... why is our patriotism based on beer anyways?

PS Why is slimpiggy starting all these disgruntled threads and not replying when he is questioned?

Yakk 07-05-2004 06:28 AM

As an aside, the poverty line should be more properly be called the low income line.

It is a measure of relative wealth.

If someone who is below the low income line becomes more wealthy, more people fall below the low income line. Even if nothing about them or their lives changed, the mere fact that others become wealthier all of a sudden makes them poor.

It is a useful measure of income disparity. Calling it a poverty line is misleading.

Daval 07-05-2004 08:34 AM

I wonder if he realizes that there is actualy conversations going on in the threads he starts :P

Are all politicians not liars? Is that not the point of elections to figure out who is throwing around less bullshit? All politicians are liars plain and simple.

Why am I proud, let's see why am I proud, Oh yeah wake up you live in Canada, you're a Canadian, there aren't suicide bombers outside your house or down the street, you can come and go as you choose, jesus too many things to list. Go and live in Iraq or Afghanistan or The Sudan for a month or two and then see if you are still bitching about Canada.

Not expecting a response as you don't seem to show back up after you start a thread, but yeah if Canada is so bad I'm sure the US would take you.

They can't be defended. so there isn't a point in trying to back them up.

Ace_O_Spades 07-07-2004 07:48 PM

from what i see, this guy is just a troll trying to stir shit up

i vote we ignore further posts by said troll

Quadraton 07-07-2004 08:05 PM

I can see this guy as either one of three things.

1) A really stupid poster
2) A really clever troll
3) Just another guy who comes to jerk off in the Titty Board, and posts meaningless comments so his account won't be deleted.

I say if the guy starts shit like this, and refuses to respond to any replies, then his IP should be banned. Make this place all that much better. Keep this guy out.

banning an ip is pointless, he can change it, it probably changes itself, if it does end up working it will only work for a certain amount of time

Nevermind the fact that most of your points are utter shite.

slimpiggy, when you find that magical fairytale country you are looking for that is 100% perfect, feel free to keep it to yourself when you move there.

Myself, I'm very proud to be doing anything and everything I can to make Canada the best country in the world.

We should derail this thread, or let it die.

Is it just me or are Canadian girls hotter on the whole than American ones?

highthief 07-10-2004 04:01 PM

My wife tells me I must answer "yes" to that question...

Lucifer 07-11-2004 06:25 PM

Travel the world, and see all the foreigners (americans mainly) putting Canadian flags on their backpacks and ask yourself, "How can I NOT be proud?"

Jam 07-12-2004 02:40 AM

your sure its not just canadian tourists with the flag on thier backpack?
