For god sake people, look after yourselves on our roads. That story of the family and french exchange student that died yesterday near Bendigo when their Clubsport hit a tree is just tragic. It's been raining a fair bit down the eastern seaboard lately and I can only beg you all to drive carefully. Far too many die on our roads each year and only we can stop the carnage.

Sorry to be cliche but accidents like this really get to me. Take care out there.

It was an L plater driving in really bad conditions, with heaps of people in the car. They're looking at changing the law so L plater's can't drive powerful cars. What a stupid law though I was lucky I was able to drive a powerful car otherwise I would have had no car to learn in at all!

Hey you can't jump on a 1100 bike a soon as you get your bike licence (or learn on an 1100), why should you be able to jump into a V8, or for that matter a turbo 4 or 6 when you are learning or have just scored your licence.

amen to that. driving home down melbourne road last saturday evening (~6pm), it was fucking horrible conditions - pissing rain, pitch black, and busy as fuck. yet a P plate VN hammers past in the emergency lane at i'd estimate 130km/h. now seriously, thats fucking stupid.

I couldnt believe when i found out earlier in the year, that learner drivers in NSW before the change of laws could have alcohol in their bloodstream (0.02 i think it was). irregardless of the experienced driver in the passanger seat, it only takes a split second for something major to go wrong, why add alcohol into th equation? I was a happy man when i read they changed it to 0.00.

as for powerful cars and learners - i'm indifferent. having never driven a more powerful car than a corolla, i cant say. however, it would make sense that if a P plater can't drive a V8, then why would a learner driver be able to?

I think it was just coincidental that it was a V8... and as for the conditions, well I suppose they have to learn to drive in them at some stage, I just doubt a highway is the best place for L platers to learn wet-weather driving...

I think we need compulsary formal driver training. The 50 hour log book is a little way toward this goal, but I think young people would benefit from courses that focus on hazard perception and defensive driving, given by qualified instructors.

The compulsary training seen in motorcycle licensing has been effective in reducing the rates of motorcycle fatalities.

It's a costly option but ultimately beneficial to everyone.

Getting an RACV driving instructor was the best thing i ever did towards getting my licence. I would very highly recomend them to anyone looking to go for their P plates.

Thinking how some people can go and get their licence without formal training really scares me sometimes, i fully agree with you cinnles.
