Top Ten Aussie films

By Aussie, I mean made in Australia by Australian film-makers.

Here's mine in no particular order...

Mad Max 1
Strictly Ballroom
Moulin Rouge
Shine
Bliss
Proof
Lantana
My Brilliant Career
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Romper Stomper

Good resource site...

Next?

bundy 06-18-2004 10:21 PM

thats a great list.

i thought of Lantana and Shine immediately... but the others there are great picks.

what about Gallipoli and Babe?

i should also admit to owning a dvd of The Adventures of Barry Mackenzie

Latch 06-18-2004 11:23 PM

I haven't seen much.. but my favourite Aussie flicks are...

The Castle (classic, and I still am not sure I get all the jokes).
Crackerjack (yeah yeah, Mick was alright in this)
Hercules Returns (Great when under the influence of certain substances)
The Nugget (eh.. not bad.. but I can't think of other Aussie movies and can't be stuffed going through Ella's (huge) list :) )

I've seen a movie called "something" Beach.. and it was pretty much about some chick who rooted w/ a lot of guys on the boat.. in the water.. on the beach.. wherever. I saw this on channel ten after only living here for a couple months.. really warpped my view of Aussie beaches (and I went to them more often heheh).

Ella 06-18-2004 11:36 PM

Oh yeah....The Castle is a classic. Also worthy are Two Hands and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, Chopper and The Interview.

Has anyone else seen Proof? Has one of Russell Crowe's first roles, and also stars Hugo Weaving. Very, very good film.

MrFlux 06-19-2004 12:11 AM

Chopper!

slimshaydee 06-19-2004 03:19 AM

The Castle (any other film is dreaming)
Pricilla
Muriel's Wedding
Mad Max
Babe
Proof (saw that in school)

Macheath 06-19-2004 04:02 AM

Yep, these are all awesome.

Don't forget Rabbit-Proof Fence and Breaker Morant.

Tophat665 06-19-2004 04:57 AM

Ditch Moulin Rouge for Priscilla Queen of the Desert. The women are more believable, the guys less whiny, and they're all the same people.

cchris 06-19-2004 04:24 PM

In no particular order I would watch these more than once.

Bad boy bubby
Mad Max
The boys
Rabbit proof fence
The interview
Two hands
Idiot box
Chopper
The dish
Romper stomper

Ella 06-19-2004 04:32 PM

I loved Idiot Box...

'Get a dog up ya!!'

cchris 06-19-2004 04:35 PM

snoop 06-21-2004 05:11 PM

Mad Max 1 thru 3
Romper Stomper (V. cool)
Croc Dundee 1 (what a cack, the followups are weak as piss)
Bad Boy Bubby
Does MATRIX count (it WAS made in Oz ??)

too many more to list, the aussie film industry is fantastic

S

I totally agree, Gallipoli, Babe, and Priscilla would be definitely in my top 10. With other classics as (in no particular order):

Mad Max (brilliant)
Chopper
Proof
Muriel's Wedding
Shine
The Castle
Two Hands/Romper Stomper

(Unfortunately there are a few movies listed on this thread I haven't seen.)

almostaugust 06-21-2004 09:57 PM

Yeah, there are some great aussie films. My favs include Idiot Box, Chopper and Mad Max. I hope i can add to it personally someday.

For those who haven't seen it: You Can't Stop the Murders is brilliant...up there with The Castle :)

I think all the rest of my favourites have already been mentioned.

Just make your own. This dude i went through uni had one, he also had a 'I shot JR' one aswell, for those who remember Dallas.

JMunaretto 06-22-2004 01:26 AM

When I was studying in Sydney I took an Australian sports history class, and we had to watch this movie called "The Club". It was about an Aussie rules team, Collingwood maybe? Anyways I thought the film was hilarious, does anyone know how I could find a copy of this movie?

No, mate...see my first post. Made in Aus by Aus film-makers. Next thing you'll be wanting is to namecheck the Star Wars flicks!

I also want to catch up with Praise....read the book but have yet to see the film.

Meridae'n 06-22-2004 09:40 AM

Gallipolli... has to be!!!

The Castle would go close, and Puberty Blues (ya mole!)

bing bing 06-24-2004 12:30 AM

2 hands
Romper Stomper
Lantana
The Castle
Strictly Ballroom
That Movie length episode of Blue Heelers (;))

almostaugust 06-30-2004 09:24 PM

Yeah, Australia has some awesome films. And aussie cinema is well respected the world over. A mate of mine just got back from trying to shop off his screenplay in LA and said that the there was heeps of interest because he was aussie. We also have a shitload of well respected actors, directors, cinematogrophers etc.

Now there's a phrase I haven't heard for too freakin' long!

platypus 07-07-2004 03:20 PM

I own most of those listed above either on DVD or tape. All are great films.
But there are a couple more I like...

for wierdness - The Last Wave.

and for yuks (and wierdness) - Welcome to Woop Woop.

wonderwench 07-07-2004 03:38 PM

It wasn't made for theatrical release (I saw it on PBS), but my all-time favorite Aussie film is "A Town Like Alice", based on the Nevil Shute novel.

almostaugust 07-07-2004 11:38 PM

yeah, PAHR scared the shit out of me as a kid. I think ill be telling a psychiatrist about it in the future sometime.

Ella 07-08-2004 03:42 AM

It is indeed an eerie film. I remember going to Hanging Rock (about 45 min drive from Melbourne) many years ago when I was little after seeing the film (seemed like a good idea to my mother at the time) but it scared the crap out of me. It truly is a spooky place.

Madd 07-08-2004 09:01 AM

The Castle has to be one of my all time fav movies.

Never really got into chopper thoe :S although everyone tells me i should watch it again.

Ella 07-08-2004 12:46 PM

I believe Eric Bana has been offered film roles purely on the strength of his role in 'Chopper' (and remember he was hand-picked by Mark Reid himself for the role). It's an incredible performance for a debut dramatic outing.

MrFlux 07-11-2004 12:30 AM

Chopper: Jimmy, if you keep stabbing me, you're going to kill me.

NEED I SAY MORE!?

That movie is aussie humour at its best, i saw it the other week on fox, very funny, another one i didnt mind was

dirty deads that was ok..

TheRagingBull 08-05-2004 10:53 PM

The Castle has to be up there.

As for Crocodile Dundee all I can say is hahaha. A great source of stereotypes for non-Australians.

Meridae'n 08-05-2004 11:25 PM

Idiot Box was pretty funny, even Jeremy Sims raised a cackle or too...

Lunchbox7 08-05-2004 11:51 PM

In no particular order:

The man from Snowey River
The Castle
Hercules Returns
Moulan Rouge
Pricilla Queen of the Desert
The Light Horsemen
Croc Dundee 1
Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome
The Sum of Us
Two Hands

wallaby72 08-09-2004 12:01 PM

The Castle - that one went straight to the pool room!

Mad Max - the original. Only problem is I bought it on DVD over here in the UK and the default language is "AMERICAN"!!! They dubbed over the original voices with bloody american accents. If you want the original aussie voices, you have to go and change it each time. That really gets on my tits.

Ella 08-11-2004 12:52 AM

No, they didn't??!!! That's farkin' criminal, wallaby!!!

HardwareBoB 08-11-2004 05:09 AM

have none of you seen gettin' square?
it's australia's answer to lock stock, and it's f'kin awesome :)
