Mis-pronouncing names

In this storry at the Register, they say that one reaon for Infogrames changing their name to Atari is:
Quote:

It's probably had enough of people mis-pronouncing its name as 'Infogames'.
I have found myself doing this very thing sometimes. It also happens with other terms. I sometimes call the new Pentium mobile CPU 'Bananas' instead of 'Banias.' I know people who say 'Ath-a-lon' rather than 'Athlon.'

So I was wondering what some of the other common mis-pronounciations?
(You don't have to stick with computers those are just the examples that came to mind.)

Nuclear vs Nucular - I don't look down on the great folks who do it. It just makes me wonder where the disconnect between eye, ear, throat, and mind is...

tbc 05-07-2003 07:45 AM

people that say PATE-RONIZING instead of PATRONIZING. Yes PAT-RONIZING... PAT, like you would on a small childs head when you are being condescending because they've said something wrong and you know it but you think it was cute.

tbc 05-07-2003 07:50 AM

Oh and that reminds me, PÂTÉ is PÂTÉ not PATE :P

Ogre840 05-07-2003 03:02 PM

JadziaDax 05-07-2003 03:23 PM

Paradigm...

I actually heard someone once say "Par - a - dig - em"
I couldn't stop laughing.

mrsandman 05-07-2003 06:50 PM

People who say "I'm not for sure"...I won't say I hate them.

There is no "k" in especially. (Like: "eKspecially")

krwlz 05-07-2003 06:56 PM

irregardless, instead of regardless

crackpot 05-07-2003 07:16 PM

I used to think "awry" was pronounced aw-ree.
Eventually, I actually found need to use it in conversation and was laughed at. Now I know better.

nefarious 05-07-2003 08:29 PM

when people say "egzit" instead of exit .. that annoys me ..

jets 05-07-2003 08:54 PM

Who understand why Colonel is pronounced KER-NUL????

vermin 05-07-2003 09:05 PM

IN-sur-ance instead of in-SUR-ance.
'borrow me some money' instead of 'lend...'
and the most annoying:
when people mispronounce forte as for-tay. Yes, it's french, but it's pronounced 'fort'. Even in france. This does sound goofy in conversation, but at least it's correct.

If they are having problems with people calling them infogames.. maybe they should change their name to INFOGAMES! duh...

These are 3 mis-pronounced car names that I heard today from someone who claims to know alot about cars...

Aston Martin pronounced as Austin Martin

Mclaren pronounced Macflaren

Porsche pronounced Porsh

I also think its funny that "mispronunciation" is commonly mispronounced. I do get some words wrong sometimes but hopefully someone will correct me and I won't do it again. I mostly have trouble with mythical and asian names like Suikoden until I hear them properly pronounced :)

bundy 05-08-2003 01:03 AM

haha
when i was selling suits, i heard this cracker.

'can you tell me where the Yves Saint Laurent is?'

or course they pronounced it, 'why-vees saynt loront'

it was against the rules to correct people, so i had to bite my tongue.

Xixox 05-08-2003 01:25 AM

Unknown Poster 05-08-2003 04:50 AM

I hate it when people pronounce "height" as "heigth".

Zotz 05-08-2003 07:50 PM

harassment......HA-RASS-MENT vs HAIR-ESS-MENT

SexyCat 05-08-2003 07:59 PM

My grandma pronounces "pancakes" as "pan-e-cakes"...
My mom pronounces "treasure" as "tray-shur" and "measure" as "may-shur"

It just drives me nuts!

Spungfoo 05-08-2003 08:40 PM

"salt" vs. "sult"

Once had a friend who had a Porsche, and was corrected when he pronounced it "Porsh"...to which he replied: " I call mine a Porsh, if and when you get one, you can call yours a Porsha."
