The phenomenon is called a "gravitational lens" Theory of Gravitational Lensing by Large Female Breasts - Project Funded by NASA and is caused when the light from a source is bent by a massive object before it gets to the viewer. This was explained a long time ago by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity and is widely attributed to the fact that one of his relatives had very large breasts.
