It depends. If its straight text like this i use the little box. If i know I'm going to write a bunch of stuff and may need to use codes, i'll use the big box and buttons.

Hmm, time and convenience usually decide it for me. If I think of something very inspiring then I get on a roll and continue writing in this little box instead of going to the next page though.

I actually compose my replies in Word, check it for grammar and spelling, and email it off to have it proofread by Ms. Pearson, my old 3rd grade teacher. After receiving her approval, I then dictate the reply to a small spider monkey. "Chico", the monkey, uses a pencil that he has taped to his tail to type the response into the box at the bottom.

If there are any errors, just lemme know, and I'll punish "Chico" appropriately. Bastard monkey's been taking up too much room around here anyway.

Most tend to be the quick reply. But if I want to enhance it with something, I add a reply.
