The Call of Cthulhu
I was bored, and I decided to do a Google Image Search for Cthulhu, trying to find new avatar material. Well, I found some, but it wasn't quite what I had planned...
It seems, judging by GISing Cthulhu, that Cthulhu doesn't strike all that much fear into peoples' hearts anymore, as will become rather apparent once you get through a few pages of the search. Here's the Search For those of you who are too lazy, here are some of the most... interesting... images that I found... Cthulhu plush: Summer Fun Cthulhu: Santa Cthulhu: Disco Cthulhu: Cthulhu, the Ladies' Man: ...and of course... Hello Cthulhu! Personally, if I were Cthulhu, I'd feel a little insulted... but a little flattered at the same time. I mean, it's not every day that you get merged with Hello Kitty!. That's just me, though.

I'm sad now. Instead of striking indescribable fear into the hearts of men, Cthulu has become a plush to for children to snuggle with?!

The bad ass evil sleeping "god" of the Lovecraft books. Someone back me up here, aren't his books the origin of the Necronomicon?
His stories are very good, and sometimes very disturbing. Some people actually believe that he was writing about real things and people, and that the Necronomicon, Cthulu etc. really exist. |

You deserve a decent answer. He has the head very similar to a cuttlefish Lovecraft (a pulp horror/fantasy writer circa 1920s) describes him thusly… “If I say that my somewhat extravagant imagination yielded simultaneous pictures of an octopus, a dragon, and a human caricature, I shall not be unfaithful to the spirit of the thing. A pulpy, tentacled head surmounted a grotesque and scaly body with rudimentary wings... It represented a monster of vaguely anthropoid outline, but with an octopus-like head whose face was a mass of feelers, a scaly, rubbery-looking body, prodigious claws on hind and fore feet, and long, narrow wings behind. This thing, which seemed instinct with a fearsome and unnatural malignancy, was of a somewhat bloated corpulence...” from the short story “The Call of Cthulhu” Here is a sketch of him by H.P., himself |

Hail JohnnyCorpse!
That is your garden variety dark young of Shub Niggarath. The sketch has its origins in Chaosium's RPG Call of Cthulhu which is based on the stories of Lovecraft. They have a plethora of multi-eyed, amorphous, tentacled creatures to choose from. To glimpse them all in one sitting might possibly drive you mad. -GH |

Verily, the ancient ones from the stars shall be mightily pissed at this.
The horror will come from the stars and devour us all.
