Actually, the conductor has resistance too, so the current would still be divided between the resistor and the conductor and the current through the conductor would be slightly less than if the resistor wasn't there at all. Resistance is never futile. Surrender is futile.

Well if the resistance is significant enough the effect would be negligible and it would be futile; you wouldn't take it into account when doing your calculations...
