The English Langauge eh?

If you think about it, some statements don't make sense in the English language. Take these, for example...I could be wrong, maybe they DO make sense, but I can't find it...

1. A small baby

Aren't all babies small? (on the scale of human development, not in comparison to another, smaller baby)

2. Stupid idiot.

An idiot IS stupid, no need to call an idiot stupid...

3. A funny joke.

A joke is always funny. Otherwisw it isn't a joke, it's an embarrassment.

4. An unknown/mysterious stranger.

Well duh, of course a stranger is unknown...or they wouldn't BE a stranger.

5. A shambolic mess.

All messes are shambolic. They're a shambles...

6. Famous star.

A star that isn't famous isn't a star. Therefore a star is automatically famous.

7. A young girl/boy.

All girls and boys are 'young'. Girl and Boy are basically masculine and feminine versions of 'child'.

8. An elderly pensioner.

Pensioners are (generally) elderly anyway, so...

These are all things I've seen written or heard spoken by people. Like I said, I'm not making out to be some sort of Super Linguist, but I think those sentences are a little whack!

Any more?

They are over emphasised commonly used silly "echo" statements. These I think are tautologies(dont know about spelling here).
My favourite here is "Finally in Conclusion"......

An unknown error has occured.

That's something I commonly saw on a Macintosh Computer.

"End result"... just to clarify that you don't get results at the beginning, I guess.
"Basic fundamentals"... heh heh.
"Future plans", or "plan ahead"... whatever you do, don't make plans for the past, you big silly.

3. A funny joke.
Some jokes are just stupid, idioticaly stupid. Some are just not funny.

4. An unknown/mysterious stranger.
Unknown stranger, ok. But not all strangers are mysterious.

5. A shambolic mess.
Where did you hear shambolic mess??

6. Famous star.
Again where did you hear this one its stupid. Some people dont think before they speak.

7. A young girl/boy.
Specifics, a young girl is IMO is 5 - 15 years old or there abouts. But you wouldnt use young to describe a girl of 19.

8. An elderly pensioner.
YEah, this one is dumb too.

THanks for the thread, made me think. How about this one.. An honest politician.
