ahhh, I didn't see the one in Bolivia when I looked it up. I did find out that there is also a Trinidad in California, but we all knew I was south of the border....but just the same, if a travel agency promises me a nice cheap vacation in Trinidad, I just want to make sure they're not sending me to New Jersey.

I'm not in Machu Picchu, either. But Machu Picchu has some similar characteristics to where I am, though where I am is not, and to my knowledge has never been, a human settlement of any sort.

BINGO!!! I'm watching Angel Falls fall over the edge right now...falling away deep into the abyss and turning into a misty spray before it hits the bottom.

Actually, I was first thinking of those flat top plateaus in Venezuela called tepui, and Angel Falls falls from the top of one called Auyantepui.

A Tepui (or Tepuy) is a table-top mountain (mesa) found only in the Guayana highlands of South America, especially in Venezuela. The word tepui means "house of the gods" in the native tongue of the Pemon, the indigenous people who inhabit the Gran Sabana. Tepuis tend to be found as isolated entities rather than in connected ranges, which makes them the host of a unique array of endemic plant and animal species. Some of the most outstanding tepuis are Autana, Auyantepui and Mount Roraima (the highest and most famous one, on the border tripoint of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana). They are typically composed of sheer blocks of Precambrian sandstone or quartzite rocks rising abruptly from the jungle, giving rise to spectacular natural scenery. Auyantepui is the source of Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall.

PS: strangely enough, my cousins grew up in Venezuela. Strange because we're all born in Austria and Hungary, but when we came to the U.S. they couldn't get in due to "quota" limits so they chose South America and other cousins chose Canada. So when we get together we're all blabbing in tongues...Hungarian, German, Czech, ...and my weird cousins in Spanish.

How about Xel-Ha?

Fortunately when I was there many years ago there were only a few other people at the inland lagoon so we had a great time snorkling there.

How's the development now adays at Akumal? When I was there in the late 1970's there was nothing on the beach except a thatched roof open air bar and all else I recall was one large "house" on the bay at the northern end where it meets the ocean...I think they said it used to belong to British Royalty and at that time it was a "bed & breakfast" sort of place with a few rooms to rent...very nice place to stay.

PS: development sucks

No, but you're pretty damn close. And this place too has been "found" by way too many tourist for me, though not nearly as well know as Xel-Ha or Xcaret. Those are more theme park then where I am. I'm more sleepy little beach town.

Majahual is still really nice. Visit it while it is, once they rebuild the cruise ship pier it will be all down hill.

As far as I know you can use anything you want. If the rules are different I've been massively cheating via google earth.

If we're not allowed to use maps, charts, atlas' and the like I have to stop playing. In fact I'm barely keeping up using them.

No, I've spent a little time running up and down the coast between Cancun and Tulum and I don't think I've ever heard of Malpaso.

I've spent time here, taught dive courses in a pool to tourists off and on here for a while.

It's the home of "The Good Life" The Spanish good life.

That's probably because I tried to post a photo of Lake Bacalar but couldn't get the image to show up. So, I gave up and posted a link to a site with several photos.

I can't seem to find any "Good Life" places in that stretch of Mexico...I'm looking for something with "Vida Buena" or similar in the name. Now I did find mention of a "fun beach bar" at La Buena Vida; this was mentioned on the "oh so official" sounding website of Locogringo dot com, so I have my doubts if this is the place.

I'm going to have a few cervezas now and think about this some more.
