...you don't need to make this segment the only one nobody guessed! Put together the words we know apply here and you'll find it.

Tully Mars 11-18-2008 05:36 PM

Desert, Maine?

BadNick 11-18-2008 05:50 PM

Tul,
Even though I suspect you still have no idea that you sort of guessed where I am, I think it's fair to give it to you since, yes, I'm in the Desert of Maine.

I was driving from Quebec across Northern Maine, mostly on private logging roads, and then headed south along the coast. From a high vantage point overlooking the river valley, I remember seeing the Kennebeck River covered in floating logs for many miles as far as I could see...this was years ago when logging on the river was still going on. As I went further south, I saw a sign for "Desert of Maine" so I had to go see. It pretty much looked like a large sandbox in the woods. But here's the official story:

Desert of Maine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Desert of Maine is a 40-acre (160,000 m2) tract of exposed glacial silt (a sand-like substance, but not actually sand) in pine forest near Freeport, Maine.

It originated when the Tuttle family farmed the site from 1797. Failure to rotate crops, combined with land clearance and overgrazing, led to soil erosion, exposing a dune of sand-like glacial silt. The initial exposed small patch of sand gradually spread and overtook the entire farm. The Tuttles abandoned the land in the 1919s when it was purchased for $300 by Henry Goldrup, who converted it to a tourist attraction in 1925.

The site is preserved as a natural curiosity, hosting a gift shop and a farming and sand museum.

Tul, do you hate Chichen Itza or the tourist related exploitation of that place? I'm curious since to me it seems like such a significant, fantastic place if you could remove the tourist related influences.

Yes, it's the tourists and the problems they bring. It use to be such a cool place. I used to make yearly, sometime twice yearly treks to Chichen. It started getting bad about 10 years ago. Then when it made one of the "new seven wonders" list, well now it's just a waste of time, IMO. There's no way to see most of it. A lot of it's roped off now. What you can see is blocked by tourist who stand in front of things while they decide weighty topics such as whether or not to do the snorkel tour tomorrow or whether or not to let little Megan get her hair braided this trip. Apparently making these decisions any where other then a doorway to a jaguar's throne simply wouldn't make any sense.

The vendors nearly out number the tourists, which is really saying something. Vendors line every walk way to every structure. I went one year for summer solstice and came away thinking "Wow! Never doing that again. The number of people was completely insane and the vendors were everywhere." Now it's like that everyday. The only change I've noticed in the last year or so is the vendors used to say "Come, see, cheaper then Wal-Mart, cheaper then Wal-Mart. " Now they've replaced Wal-Mart with Target for some unknown reason.

Want to see a cool Mayan ruin go somewhere like Uxmal.
