ahhh, you must be in South Pass City...I found that at ghosttowns.com of all places South Pass City - Wyoming Ghost Town
An interesting thing I discovered while searching was that there is an Atlantic City about 3 miles east northeast from South Pass City. |

I chose this location in part due to the current election. Wyoming is known as the "Equality State." It was the first state to allow women the vote. On February 17, 1870, Esther Hobart Morris became the first woman to hold judicial office in the modern world when she was appointed justice of the peace for South Pass City. Esther Hobart Morris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia I might actually spend next summer there. They have volunteer opportunities available and I have time available. I was looking at the Peace Corp, even had my ex lined up to take my dogs. But I basically got turned down, or put on a waiting list of unknown length, for the program I applied. And yes there is an Atlantic City just northeast of South Pass. A good friend of mine found a gold nugget about the size of my thumb in Little Hermit Gulch Creek on the road between the two towns. Butch Cassidy is said to have stayed in South Pass City on more then one occasion hence the the "Hole in the Wall Gang" reference. You be up Nick. |
Tul, I hope your opportunity with the Peace Corp works out. That sounds like it would be a great experience for you and a great contribution to our community.
When I spent some time there, I remember learning about how progressive Wyoming was back in the day as far as equal rights for women. In addition to what Tul said about Esther Hobart Morris, in 1894 Estelle Reel became one of the first women in the United States elected to a state office, and in 1924, Nellie Ross was the first elected woman governor to take office in the United States. I guess the men were too busy being bandits and cowboys so the women took care of business. OK folks, where in the world am I this time? |
Yeah, don't think the Peace Corps going to be an option. They seemed real interested then suddenly it was "don't call us we'll call you." Maybe they found out about that old bank job? So much for a 20 month stay in the South Pacific. Anyway that's what lead me to contact South Pass City. I knew they took on volunteers in the summer months. It's unpaid but you get housing.
Back to the game... WH? |

THE TATTOOED LADY We went to town to see That old tattooed lady She was a sight to see Tattooed from head to knee. My Uncle Ned was there He came to gape and stare I never he declared Seen such a freak so fair. And on her jaw was the Royal Flying Corp. And on her back was the Union Jack Now could you ask for more? All up and down her spine Was the Queen's own Guard in line While all around her hips Sailed a fleet of battleships And over her left kidney Was a bird's eye view of Sydney But what we liked best Was upon her chest, A little home in Wai-ki-ki. |
