I'd like to trek around Patagonia some day soon, but that's not where I am now.
|
cartagena?
|
But not a city?
Amazon River? |
Nope, not Cartegena and like Tul says, not a city. And not on the Amazon River, either.
|
Lake Titicaca?
|
Damn, all these cool places I coulda been...but I'm not.
Clue: I'm north of Lake Titicaca. |

Machu Picchu?
Looks like there is a Trinidad, Bolivia too. Never heard of it before but it's not an island... of course you said not a city either so? |
ahhh, I didn't see the one in Bolivia when I looked it up. I did find out that there is also a Trinidad in California, but we all knew I was south of the border....but just the same, if a travel agency promises me a nice cheap vacation in Trinidad, I just want to make sure they're not sending me to New Jersey.
I'm not in Machu Picchu, either. But Machu Picchu has some similar characteristics to where I am, though where I am is not, and to my knowledge has never been, a human settlement of any sort. |
Angel Falls?
|
BINGO!!! I'm watching Angel Falls fall over the edge right now...falling away deep into the abyss and turning into a misty spray before it hits the bottom.
http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...from_Raton.jpg Actually, I was first thinking of those flat top plateaus in Venezuela called tepui, and Angel Falls falls from the top of one called Auyantepui. A Tepui (or Tepuy) is a table-top mountain (mesa) found only in the Guayana highlands of South America, especially in Venezuela. The word tepui means "house of the gods" in the native tongue of the Pemon, the indigenous people who inhabit the Gran Sabana. Tepuis tend to be found as isolated entities rather than in connected ranges, which makes them the host of a unique array of endemic plant and animal species. Some of the most outstanding tepuis are Autana, Auyantepui and Mount Roraima (the highest and most famous one, on the border tripoint of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana). They are typically composed of sheer blocks of Precambrian sandstone or quartzite rocks rising abruptly from the jungle, giving rise to spectacular natural scenery. Auyantepui is the source of Angel Falls, the world's tallest waterfall. http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g2...ezuela_001.jpg PS: strangely enough, my cousins grew up in Venezuela. Strange because we're all born in Austria and Hungary, but when we came to the U.S. they couldn't get in due to "quota" limits so they chose South America and other cousins chose Canada. So when we get together we're all blabbing in tongues...Hungarian, German, Czech, ...and my weird cousins in Spanish. |
You pick interesting spots.

Look to my avatar. I have to go pick a friend (yaz, "A" coming back to town!) at the airport, then the gym. So I'll be out for a few. |

ok, mexico... on the yucatan? |
French, interesting.
Yes, in the Yucatan. Back from the airport, waiting for the rain to stop. Might be here for a few, you could get this before I walk down to the gym. |
How about Xel-Ha?
Fortunately when I was there many years ago there were only a few other people at the inland lagoon so we had a great time snorkling there. How's the development now adays at Akumal? When I was there in the late 1970's there was nothing on the beach except a thatched roof open air bar and all else I recall was one large "house" on the bay at the northern end where it meets the ocean...I think they said it used to belong to British Royalty and at that time it was a "bed & breakfast" sort of place with a few rooms to rent...very nice place to stay. PS: development sucks |

how about Majahual?
|
North.
South of Cancun, north of Tulum. Majahual is still really nice. Visit it while it is, once they rebuild the cruise ship pier it will be all down hill. While you're there check out Lake Bacalar, it's awesome. http://lakebacalar.org/lakebacalar.org.html |
I can't see the image, Tully. Maybe you wanted [img]?
I haven't been to Mexico in a few years, so forgive my archaic knowledge of what villages and/or towns reside on the peninsula. I am drawing a white line in circles. :| No clue. EDIT: Also, did someone refine the rules that we can make use of cartographs and the like? I'd like to refresh my memory of the visit, but I don't want to infringe upon the rules. |
I'm wild guessing now...as if I wasn't before...
how about Palmul? |
Smoking, but no.
No "Pal" and "Mal" instead of "Mul." Quote:
As far as I know you can use anything you want. If the rules are different I've been massively cheating via google earth. If we're not allowed to use maps, charts, atlas' and the like I have to stop playing. In fact I'm barely keeping up using them. |
I'm diggin deep here, Tul...how about Presa de Malpaso.
Don't say "yes" just because it has a "Mal" in it! And after all this, I hope you can post some pics of this place cause a pic is worth a thousand words...my wife did NOT say that. |
Tully: Ah, I couldn't see the link at all in the first place... only when I quoted it... yet it seems to have righted itself now.
BadNick: Hopefully you win this round for two reasons; you have been chipping away at the guesses pretty hard, and maybe for the benefit of simpletons like me wanting to catch up to the proliferation of this thread by 22 pages since my last visit, you could perhaps choose a not-so-pinpoint locale of this Planet Earth; recognition factor helps move the cogs. That's all. Kudos. (and I am off to subscribe to National geographic for a free poster-size world map.) |

I've spent time here, taught dive courses in a pool to tourists off and on here for a while. It's the home of "The Good Life" The Spanish good life. Quote:
That's probably because I tried to post a photo of Lake Bacalar but couldn't get the image to show up. So, I gave up and posted a link to a site with several photos. |
I can't seem to find any "Good Life" places in that stretch of Mexico...I'm looking for something with "Vida Buena" or similar in the name. Now I did find mention of a "fun beach bar" at La Buena Vida; this was mentioned on the "oh so official" sounding website of Locogringo dot com, so I have my doubts if this is the place.
I'm going to have a few cervezas now and think about this some more. |
