The Power of Uncle Phil has prevailed again! I wish I know how you do that, unc.
On Sept 26, 1926 a monument where Old Chief Joseph (tu-eka-kas) lies buried was dedicated at the foot of Wallowa Lake. The father of the legendary Chief Joseph died and was originally buried at the forks of the Wallowas and Lostine Rivers. More than fifty years later, his remains were moved by white men to his present burial site. As Old Chief Joseph lay dying, he spoke to his young son, "My son, my body is returning to my mother earth, and my spirit is going very soon to see the great spirit chief. When I am gone, think of your country...always remember your father never sold his country. You must stop your ears whenever you are asked to sign a treaty selling your home. A few more years and white men will be all around you. They have eyes on this land." |
